Like I said, this is why IU basketball is in the position that it’s currently in. Schools like UNC and Duke are much better schools academically. They were both paying players. UNC was literally having its players take fake classes. Did it fire the coach in charge? No. UNC kept him and he went to two more final fours and won a national championship. Was its academic reputation irredeemable harmed by sticking with their guy? No. It’s still considered one of the best public colleges in the country. No one gives a d*** about morals in a moral-less land like big-time ncaa athletics. Kelvin Sampson knew what college basketball was about. He knew what you needed to do to win big. And he was doing it. 3rd place in the conference and a round of 32 appearance his first year. 22-4 in his second year with a nice recruiting class signed up. Don’t hire him in the first place if you don’t want him to do his thing. If IU had concerns with the character of player he was bringing in, work with him on that. Don’t fire him. Tom Crean wasn’t exactly bringing in all Boy Scouts and Rhodes Scholars.

This is why IU is in the position that IU is in. College coaches were orchestrating dufflebags full of cash and IU gave itself the death penalty over text messages and phone calls. Sampson was playing big boy recruiting but IU would rather play in the minor leagues while touting its morality.

It’s inspiring to watch Filipowski after his near amputation earlier this year against Wake Forest.
-
Meh, Sampson’s ‘violations’ were nothing burgers compared to what other coaches were doing. IU could’ve doubled down and been just fine but we took the holier than thou route and are still dealing with the consequences 16 years later. Duke, Kansas, UK, etc. wouldn’t have thought twice about it. Watching Sampson in the tournament every year is a painful reminder.
-
IU has made 6 tournaments in 16 years since firing Sampson. Sampson has made 5 sweet 16s in the past 5 tournaments (IU has made 4 in my entire lifetime). What could’ve been…
-
Sampson would’ve killed it at IU. He’s built a powerhouse at Houston. A school that made the tournament once between 1992 and 2018. You could argue that IU killed its basketball program the day it fired Sampson, imo.
-
Tim Priller would’ve taken care of them.
-
I hate the sideline reports during the game. “Your team has been stinking the past few minutes. What do you need to do differently moving forward?” Just totally pointless, imo.
-
Look… Mike Woodson just found the perfect red to pair with his Fuente Fuente OpisX Reserva d’Chateau. He’s doing what he was brought here to do.
-
Yeah they actually manage to include the ‘outside’ part. #1 in the country in 3 pt percentage. IU… was 273rd.. lol.
-
I remember scoffing when @btownqb said that we should recruit Braden smith and he just had 14 points and 15 assists to help Purdue to the elite 8.
-
I don’t really disagree, but I can see why they want someone new. Gard’s only success was with Ryan’s players, and since then he’s struggled in the tournament. We’d want a change too and Wisconsin has been way more successful than IU this century.
-
I’ll never be able to root for Purdue to win because their fans really are the absolute worst, but I also can’t hate on Painter for all the reasons you stated. I’m feeling very jealous of Purdue fans. *barfs*
-
Gard’s been pretty meh, though. Good regular seasons mostly but hasn’t made it past the first weekend since 2017. 2 tournament wins since then.

MM did shoot 38% from 3 on 4.9 attempts during conference play, so we may get some shooting from him next year. If he plays at the 4 that would be great, but I’d be surprised if Woodson goes that route after his first three years. He wants to play through the post and doesn’t value the 3 ball I’m generally in favor of acquiring talent and worrying about the fit later, but not with this coach. Tucker/MM/Reneau at the 3-5 would be the ideal situation offensively, but not defensively. That’s the problem when you’re filling 6-7 roster spots. You have to take talent when you can get it, but the. The fit can become all jumbled.
-
I’m sure Woodson loves IU basketball and wants to help it, but the effort (well, lack thereof) he puts in is not that of someone passionate about the job. It’s like he wants to help IU but wants to put in the minimum effort wise to do so.
-
Exactly. Woodson’s results are underwhelming. Imo, his results still warrant firing. However, it’s his attitude that makes me want him fired so bad.
-
I don’t like that he neglects recruiting all year long and then gets his rich donor friends to try to bail him out with extra NIL money. It’s laziness. Other coaches use NIL too but don’t take Woodson’s approach. That’s my problem with it all.
-
It’s because we saw the same thing happen last year. MM was the #10 recruit, McDonald’s all American. We then finish 10-10 in a very mediocre Big 10 and miss the tournament. Tucker is the #20 recruit, McDonald’s all American. Will we better next year? Maybe. Ware is gone, and without him we probably win a dozen games max last year. As I said before, we’ll probably buy enough ‘talent’ to keep the pumpers pumping during the offseason. It’s already starting. But come November they’re still gonna be coached by Mediocre Mike.
-
NGW can you show this to Woodson plz?
-
The problem is with what the IU administration considers to be ‘failing’. Does another season like his first constitute a failure? I don’t think it will to them. 1 tournament win in 2 seasons got him a million dollar raise. We basically have to hope for a total train wreck if we want him gone. Anything better than an absolute disaster will keep us in basketball purgatory.
-
I don’t see any way that he’ll leave voluntarily. IU will have to fire him. im fully expecting another bubble season and early tournament exit. Woodson will get a nice extension and raise because “you can’t fire a guy who led you to three tournament appearances in four seasons.” The pumpers will then tout the sick new round of 64 banner hanging in the Hall.
-
They can. Unfortunately, the team I like is led by a coach I don’t like at all. The stories we’ve heard about him paint the picture of a coach that no part of me wants to support.
-
Mike is cooking something real special up
-
Well if that happens he would’ve made 4 straight B1G tournaments. Can’t fire a coach with that track record.
