    Fire Coach Woodson Thread

He’s done absolutely nothing during his three years at IU to warrant “credit.” Nothing positive, at least. I’ll give him credit when he retires for the good of the program because he recognizes that he’s not the right guy for the job.

#2 is the most likely option given the astronomically los expectations IU has for its basketball program these days (1 tournament win in 2 years gets you a million dollar raise as if we’re a mid major Cinderella story), and it’s the option that should piss everyone off. It’s unlikely Woodson misses the tournament given the roster his buddies bought for him, though if anyone could do it, it’d be Mike Woodson. And if he makes the tournament then they’ll stick with him because hey it’s IU, making the tournament is the new final four run.

    NCAA MBB Transfer Portal

If you’re talking solely the product on the field/court then I probably agree (except bowl season). But college sports is way more than that to me. It’s the rivalries between schools. It’s the players developing throughout their careers. Watching players go from freshmen to seniors. It’s not two teams of mercenaries from USC and Rutgers playing an 11:00 pm Friday night Big 10 football game. But, it is what it is I guess.

    NCAA MBB Transfer Portal

It was inevitable, but I can’t imagine anyone believes this will make college sports better. Just look at how NIL + transfer portal have harmed them.

How Many IUFB Wins In 2024?

12 wins for IU will definitely be coming this July when I build the program into a dynasty on the new college football video game.

Same conference record as Chris Collins despite all the advantages IU has over northwestern in basketball. Mediocre Mike - doing less with more. He’d find a way to get blown out of the second round of the ncaa tournament with the New York Knicks.

Let’s keep it simple for you. Say Mike Woodson leads IU to a 7 seed and a loss in the second round. Should that result in him being fired?

    Fire Coach Woodson Thread

Instead, you’ll be in here yelling at all the people saying Fire Woodson like you have been for the past 3+ months. Like I said, set the expectations low enough that even Mike Woodson can meet them. There’s no reason the expectations shouldn’t be higher than what the 2022/2023 team did.

    Fire Coach Woodson Thread

The expectations the pumpers are putting out do not align with how they’re characterizing this off-season, I.e., that Woodson did so awesome and knocked it our of the park. The expectations should be a 1, 2, or, at worst, a 3 seed. They don’t want to set the expectations too high, though, because they know Woodson isn’t a good enough coach to meet high expectations. So, they temper them so they can then turn around and advocate for keeping Woodson next year because hey, he set the mediocre expectations we set.

Yeah, my IU basketball experience has been the post-Knight s***show. Lucky me. The Bob Knight comments are just stupid. First, he wasn’t dumb enough to attack his own fanbase. Second, he sure as hell wouldn’t say that he did his job after a season as disastrous as last season. Third, he won 4 conference titles in his first five seasons at IU. He lost 10 conference games total in his first five seasons. Mike Woodson lost 10 conference games last year alone. Bad personalities are much more tolerable when they’re exceptional at their jobs. Mediocre Mike hasn't won anything other than his four offseason championships.

Through their first three seasons Archie was at .561 and Woodson was at .612. Going into year four Woodson got his rich buddies to buy him a team. Archie didn’t have that luxury. Im not even arguing that Archie was a better coach, but let’s not pretend that they were coaching under the same circumstances. IU was at a big disadvantage pre-NIL/transfer portal because our administration wouldn’t let the coaching staff go into the gray area. Archie, and the coaches before him, were fighting an uphill battle in recruiting. Now IU is at a big advantage with NIL. Woodson only winning 61% of his games and 51.7% of his conference games with all the advantages he now has as the IU coach shows how bad of a coach he is.

    Fire Coach Woodson Thread

He’s probably better than Archie, but he does have two big advantages that no other IU coach has had. What would Woodson look like without the transfer portal and NIL? He’s sitting at 31-29 in the Big 10 with it. Without it, he’d likely be a total disaster given his halfhearted recruiting efforts.

How would you describe him then? Look up Ricky Davis. His career numbers are very similar to Woodson’s. A little worse of a player, but certainly a better comparison than Scottie Pippen lmao. 14/2.3/2.3 on 52.2% TS for Woodson, 13.5/3.5/3.3 on 52.5% TS for Davis. 15.0 PER and -0.3 BPM for Woodson, 14.7 PER and -0.8 for Davis. .083 ws/48 for Woodson, .061 for Davis. Woodson played around 50 more games in his career than Davis. 11 seasons for Woodson, 12 for Davis. Does calling Ricky Davis a mediocre player offend anyone?

The initial post, which I wrote, said that he was a mediocre NBA player. He averaged 14 ppg on below average efficiency for his career. Wasn’t much of a passer or a rebounder. No accolades of any kind. Won 7.7% of his playoff games as a player. And yes, I also later called him a journeyman. I stand by that. He played for six teams in eleven seasons. Stayed in one place longer than two seasons only once. And this whole conversation started in response to a post that speculated that Mike Woodson feels that he has the track record to support his arrogance based off his nba career. As I’ve said multiple times now, nothing in his nba career warrants the arrogance he’s displayed. He was a role player and then a mediocre at best coach.

All three of his seasons have been disappointing. The first ended with a 29 point loss in the round of 64. The second ended with a 16 point loss in the round of 32. The third ended with a 27 point loss in the BTT. How will the fourth end?

He missed the tournament with the most ‘stars’ in the conference. Pretty epic indeed.
  21. Hoosierfan2017

    Fire Coach Woodson Thread

You’re the one bringing up Mike Woodson scoring 48 points in a game as proof of his almighty greatness. That was the only 40 point game of his nba career. You seem offended by folks thinking Woodson wasn’t a great nba player. You also repeatedly talk about “3rd highest winning percentage in the past 60 years!” as if it’s supposed to mean literally anything. Great, Mike Woodson snuck by some crappy out of conference teams. He’s 31-29 in the Big 10, which has been very mediocre during his time at IU. That’s worse than Bob Knight, worse than Mike Davis, and worse than Kelvin Sampson. It’s also worse than Tom Crean’s last seven seasons at IU, and far worse than his last six seasons. So, Mike Woodson has a better Big 10 record than Archie Miller. Better lock him up with a lifetime contract.

The only person throwing a temper tantrum here is you. Notable future hall of famer Malachi Flynn scored 50 points in a game this season, so looks like you’re right.

That’s fine. You don’t have to care about how he acts. Some of us do care about the way the head coach of our favorite college team behaves. Why does that bother you so much? We don’t all have to agree with you.

    Fire Coach Woodson Thread

My career is doing just fine, but thank you so much for your concern :) Mike Woodson played 11 seasons, not 14 seasons, and he only played 15 games his last season. Please tell us what he did during those 11 seasons to warrant the arrogance he’s displayed over the past year as IU’s coach. He was a journeyman player, he was a journeyman coach, but he walks around like he was LeBron on the court and Phil Jackson on the sideline.

Career PER of 15.0, which is the league average. Below average career TS%, negative career BPM. 1-12 career playoff record as a player. 0 all-star teams, 0 accolades of any kind as a professional player. Was he a bad nba player? No. But this was the initial post that started the conversation: ”I think a large part of the disconnect is that Woodson feels like he does have that track record - based on his playing career and NBA coaching resume. That's why he bristles when fans or local media question him.” Mike Woodson’s nba career was unremarkable and so was his nba coaching career. Absolutely nothing in his nba career warrants the arrogance he’s displayed during his IU coaching tenure.
