Archie Miller's staff at Indiana will be Bruiser Flint, Tom Ostrom (Dayton) and Ed Schilling (UCLA),
AKHoosier replied to opiej's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
Well when someone says hiring him is a leap into the dark side of recruiting, to me that suggests that he's done some shady things and has been penalized for it. I would reserve a phrase like that for Larry Brown, Kelvin Sampson, John Calipari, Eddie Sutton, etc. Maybe you meant that he operates in the gray. -

That's a hell of a stretch to say that about Schilling. What has he been penalized for by the NCAA? From what I understand, he doesn't have a history of major or even minor transgressions with the NCAA, so why is hiring him considered "a leap into the dark side of basketball recruiting"? -

Wow, Ed Schilling would round out a great bench of assistants. We won't completely lock up the state in recruiting, but we'll definitely get our fair share. I really hope this is true. -
Who's declaring/transferring around NCAA 2017?
AKHoosier replied to reconmkd's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
Yeah I suppose it's all relative. For some reason they think it's realistic to be in the Final 4 and compete for a national championship every year, so they can't be satisfied with winning the conference and getting to the Elite 8 pretty much every year, Final 4 at least every 3 or 4 years. I mean, most schools would kill for that, but they just won't allow themselves to be happy. -

Judging by the UK boards, Cal has already started to wear out his welcome a little bit. I'm sure they like the success, but their fans are getting tired of so much turnover on the roster after every season. Now with word that Humphries is likely to pursue professional options instead of return to UK, they'll have a completely green team next season. I also saw that Sasha Jones or whatever his name is could supposedly transfer as well. He was a 5* last year. -
Player and Recruit Retention News/Discussion & Potential Transfers

The thing about Gelon is he still has a lot of basketball he could play at another school if he chose to go that route, unlike Priller. It would be up to Grant to decide whether he wants to ride the bench at Indiana and hope to make an impact as an upperclassman, or transfer to another school like Ball State or Western Carolina, sit out a year, and play 20-25 minutes a game for a few years. I wouldn't blame him for doing either. As a fan, I can sure as heck understand both choices. -

I always thought it was overrated too. I know it's heresy to say, but it's 90% hype considering all the love it always gets. I'd probably take Aver's over it if I get to pick, and it's too bad Mad Mushroom closed because that was my go-to. -

I think Smith is the most important recruit for 2017. Puts up great numbers at high level Illinois basketball, which is nice because he's a Midwest kid from B1G country. One thing we missed this past season was an athletic, slashing wing like Troy Williams, and I never thought I'd say how much we missed Troy Williams, but his baseline cuts to the basket were instant offense. He would be a great, great addition to our roster for 3-4 years. Oh, and Mad Mushroom was the best pizza in Bloomington from what I recall. Aver's a close second. -

I really don't know if I believe that. Archie is the head coach, we live or die with him now. It seems like assistants are there to help with day-to-day team drills and recruit. Chris Hawkins would be a heck of a hire for the IU bench. I think someone in the B1G or nearby will give him a chance, and we should beat them to the punch. People love him, and he just won a state title. He's really well respected. -

Just pisses me off how we have to pay out the @$$ for years because of phone calls, yet UNC and Roy can turn a blind eye to cheating and academic fraud for years and the NCAA does nothing. Don't let the good ole boy demeanor fool you. Roy Williams is as dirty as they come. -

This game is unwatchable. These refs are pathetic. -

OG should go at this point, as much as I hate to say. Keep in mind that Thomas Bryant didn't even go through the evaluation process last year, so he never got that feedback from scouts and coaches about what he needs to work on. He should declare this year, without hiring an agent. I can't see him being picked in the first round right now, this is a pretty deep draft. Ultimately he should come back for another year to improve upon what he needs to work on. -

I didn't say I'd be right to do that though. I'm 31 now, and my adult self knows you shouldn't do things like that as a high school student teacher. All I'm saying is that if I was a student teacher at 22 years old, yeah, I'd probably have no problem chasing legal-age high school girls. It'd be a mistake, but not an unforgivable one that should haunt a guy 20 years later. You can try and claim you wouldn't do the same thing either, but it's one thing to actually be confronted with that scenario, and another to sit behind a keyboard and play the part of the good guy. -

OK but a poster said he would have been 22 at the time. That's a huge detail that was left out of the earlier claim. Come on, let's be honest. If I was a student teacher at 22 years old, I'd probably be slaying all kinds of legal-age high school girls too as long as they weren't my students. That's not a big deal at all. -

Actually that IS illegal. Even if a girl is 18, you can't have a sexual relationship with someone who you're in a position of authority over. Also, I don't believe that at all. If this was true, he would never be a Division 1 coach. He would fail every background check on him. -

I'm so getting my hopes up on John Groce like I did with Billy Donovan, which probably means we'll get left at the altar all over again. He would be such a solid addition to the staff for hopefully a few years to lock up the Midwest. All eyes to the Akron job now, hopefully they take a chance on an up-and-comer rather than Groce. -

A name like "Bruiser Flint" makes him sound like a bad guy in an Adam Sandler movie. He seems like a good candidate though. -

Ah yeah I misread that, he is 2019. Good thing, Archie has plenty of time to get in on him. Also I'd really like for Miller to make a last-ditch effort at Darius Garland. Of course Phinisee should be just as high of a priority, but Garland would be a game-changer. -

Do we have a shot with Keion Brooks (2018) out of Fort Wayne? He's a borderline 5* PF who's being recruited by most of the B1G, but I think Michigan State and PU are up there. It doesn't seem like Crean prioritized him. -
I'd have to dig, it may have been Forde's article a few weeks ago. This is before even Crean was fired.

Wanting your name on the back of your jersey doesn't necessarily mean you're a selfish player. I actually don't think it means anything at all. I like the uniforms just the way they are, but wouldn't mind too much if they put names on the back.

Interesting stuff. I'm sure we're in the clear here, but there was an article a few weeks ago that said another power school had done their legwork on Archie and backed off due to something in the past. I'm sure he wouldn't have been hired if it was anything serious.

Yeah he looks like he needs to slim down a bit and work on his conditioning. He's 6'10" and I don't think I've ever seen him dunk. -
Be careful with comparisons though, especially in sports. So, so many different factors influence whether or not a coach can be successful, especially when you compare professional sports to college. You and I both know that for every situation where a young up-and-comer turned out poorly, there are probably plenty of examples of them turning out well. Time will tell.

Does anyone have kenpom offense/defense stats for Dayton the past few years handy? It'd be nice to see his strength of schedule too, I really hope our RPI improves in the non-conference now.
