2017 July Evaluation Period
AKHoosier replied to Class of '66 Old Fart's topic in Indiana Basketball Recruiting Forum
It just depends what you mean by "it" when you say we should be above it. From my limited knowledge of how recruiting and these things operate, there are various ways you can bend the rules or operate in the gray to get a kid to play for you. The promise of connections to secure a post-amateur shoe deal, maybe a little $$ on the side if you're a player, meetings with reps, things like that don't really bother me too much, because it just doesn't really hurt anyone. I'm not beholden to strictly obeying the NCAA's rules, because the NCAA is such a joke with selective enforcement of rules and seemingly always moving goalposts and standards. I just don't want IU to turn into a destination for all the kids' handlers and "uncles" looking to leach off of a kid. I don't want anyone like Lavar Ball or Tom Lyles at IU. I don't care if that makes me out of touch or whatever, but I'll deal with years of 22-11 seasons before I see IU turn into that type of a program. -

MSU was the "team to beat" for a while with Jabari Parker too. -
(2018) PG Darius Garland to Vandy
AKHoosier replied to ccgeneral's topic in Indiana Basketball Recruiting Forum
No it isn't. Abell was the year before in 2011 and was a late addition. Gary Harris was 2012 and would have been the oversign. -

Pretty much, although he knew there was a spot for him if he wanted it. I still think Remy Abell prevented us from landing Gary Harris, he didn't want to be the oversign. -

Remember, Gary Harris' girlfriend was a student at IU, lot of good she did us haha. -
(2019) SF Keion Brooks Jr. to Kentucky
AKHoosier replied to ccgeneral's topic in Indiana Basketball Recruiting Forum
Ed Schilling is out in Ft. Wayne again to watch him today. I can't help but feel like we're the leader for him. -
(2018) C Moses Brown to UCLA
AKHoosier replied to Class of '66 Old Fart's topic in Indiana Basketball Recruiting Forum
His highlight videos don't make him look all that great either. I'd rather have him than not have him due to the perception and momentum for recruiting, but he's not super-elite 5 star big. He's more Dakari Johnson than Jahlil Okafor/Anthony Davis. -
(2019) PF Trayce Jackson-Davis to INDIANA
AKHoosier replied to Uspshoosier's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
Based on some interviews, it does sound like he really likes IU and the coaches here. He's also mentioned how he likes how close it is to home. Brooks and Jackson-Davis would be quite a haul of in-state bigs to land. -
2017 July Evaluation Period

You think the #2 PG would be scared off by a 3 star who is on the fringe of the top 150? He's going to face competition for playing time anywhere he goes. Heck, Vanderbilt signed a 6'1" 4* PG in 2017, who would be a sophomore when Garland gets on campus. I'd say he probably has a better chance of beating out Green/Phinisee than he does that guy. -

Hopefully the point guard dominoes start to fall pretty soon after the July evaluation period. -
Arizona vs IU series coming to a town near.....
AKHoosier replied to CrossboneIU22's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
Awesome news. I'd also like to see us schedule teams from power conferences we wouldn't normally play, but are obvious RPI upgrades over Houston Baptist or Mississippi Valley State and probable wins for us. Teams like Stanford, Oregon State, Ole Miss, Washington, Tennessee, etc. Solid matchups that have more TV appeal than Austin Peay. -
2018 General Recruiting Thread
AKHoosier replied to WayneFleekHoosier's topic in Indiana Basketball Recruiting Forum
Not correct. I think he'd probably take him eventually but to say "Archie clearly wants him" is an overstatement. I mean we've offered two new point guards since the second part of the July evaluation period alone. He has yet to really play well in front of the staff. Archie is trying to see if we can do better. -

I feel like Romeo and another guard are our best shots to fill out the class, most likely Phinisee or David Duke. The more his recruitment goes by, I just don't think we'll have much of a shot with Garland. The rumor is he's intrigued by staying home to play for Vandy, and with Duke and UK coming on strong, it'll be tough to keep up here. -
(2018) G/F Damezi Anderson to Detroit Mercy
AKHoosier replied to Hovadipo's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
So excited to have a South Bend kid playing at IU, I hope he does so well. I love getting kids from all over the state, not just Indy. Man, what a 24-hour span. And to think we still have room for 3 more. As long as one of them is Langford, I don't care who the other 2 are. -
(2018) SG Romeo Langford - INDIANA HOOSIERS
AKHoosier replied to ccgeneral's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
Apparently Duke has not been in contact with Romeo, per another board quoting Romeo himself. And UK is likely out per the mods of another UK site. Looking like an IU-UL battle here. Please, oh please.... -
(2018) G/F Damezi Anderson to Detroit Mercy
AKHoosier replied to Hovadipo's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
Maybe good news coming, as it looks like Damezi will likely decide soon, probably by July/August. http://www.southbendtribune.com/sports/high_school/basketball/riley-s-anderson-looks-to-round-out-hoops-game/article_3fbb91af-7e28-525b-86a0-c50472d9e44b.html Anderson received his first college scholarship offer – from Purdue – last year. Offers from Connecticut, DePaul and Michigan followed. Last month, while on a visit to Bloomington, Anderson received a scholarship offer from new Indiana coach Archie Miller. That one stayed with him a little longer. “They first liked me when Tom Crean was there,” Anderson said. “But Archie Miller sees something in me and that’s pretty cool.” -

Yeah, another 4* front court player who could take minutes from Brooks. -

I wonder if this is related to Jallow at all. I've read that maybe the staff isn't as high on Jallow as our last staff was. Regardless, I'd love to get either one. -

I'm pretty sure Damezi Anderson is visiting today, but I may have made that up. I know he's at least planning on visiting in June so maybe it's him. He's a 4* though. -
Chris Holtmann named Ohio State Head Coach
AKHoosier replied to FortWayneHoosier's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
I would not. He is not that good, even my co-worker who is a Butler grad says Brunk reportedly has not impressed anyone in practices, which is why he had to redshirt. Even his high school tape never impressed me that much, he can't run the floor very well and isn't that athletic. Just because he's 6'10" doesn't mean he fills a need. -
He's not getting any better than a 2nd tier type job, which is what OSU is.
-
Yeah I definitely don't want Holtmann at OSU, that'd be a really good hire for them. And OSU is definitely a top job, especially for a guy like Holtmann. He's not getting a UK, UCLA, Duke, UNC type of job, and OSU is definitely in that next tier.

(2018) SF Nahziah Carter to Washington

I think this kid will be wearing an IU uniform at some point, whether it's after this year or next. -
Player and Recruit Retention News/Discussion & Potential Transfers

Cody was always listed 6'10" or 6'11" until after his freshman season at IU, then Crean labelled him as "approaching 7 foot". Whatever that means. -

Just like most teams do though. My favorite story about a negative growth spurt is how Michael Beasley was listed at 6'10" coming out of high school and at Kansas State, yet at the NBA combine measured in at just over 6'6".
