They “Retired” Coach Woodson Thread
AKHoosier replied to Banksyrules's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
So is Dane Fife totally never an option to be on an IU sideline ever again? As long as he's on board with NIL, I like the idea of him being on Dusty May's staff here to coach the defense. Our defense has gotten progressively worse since he left after the first year and I wonder if that isn't a coincidence. -

I'm hoping if we lose at home to Nebraska on Wednesday then Woodson announces his retirement by the end of the week. It's not happening, but all I have is hope right now. -
Auburn clearly rattled tonight by all the "Pearl to IU" smoke. Feels like it's just a matter of time now.

Feels like they'll be due for a "get right" game when they stroll in to Bloomington.

Good Lord. This makes me very excited but at the same annoyed if the IU administration never reached out to him in the past. -

Ha I was thinking this is a great way to ensure he hits 3s in Assembly Hall next year. For the record I wouldn't hold it against him at all. He's from that area and they have it together more than we do right now. -

So Trey Galloway is probably going to Purdue then. That would be a colossal kick to the nuts. -

Don't get me wrong I'd be super excited about Bruce Pearl, but I ultimately feel like the timing with him has passed us by. He could probably give us 5-7 good years though, so it might be worth taking that shot. -
Figured we had an early and unexpected entry into the portal with all the sudden activity in this thread.

I don't see the post about IU putting out feelers on Trilly's Twitter account. Maybe it's somewhere else? -

IU athletic department and administration has to be a bit rattled right now. My guess is they're hoping and praying Woodson can finish the season 5-2 or better so some of the pressure dies down. Man if we get blasted at home by NW this weekend I don't see Woodson recovering from that. -
Yeah hoping that a team is going to change after 24 games into the season is just like hoping a 66 year old coach is going to suddenly change the way he constructs a team and implements his playing style. Not happening.

New Mexico has always had a pretty solid program with good fan support, so I think his success is more a product of that. Kind of the same way Archie had success at Dayton. Just my opinion.

17-14 is where I think the regular season ends. Throw darts on a dart board how you think we'll get there, but looking at the schedule I find 3 more wins. Definitely not bad enough to get him fired IMO. Unfortunately I don't think he's going anywhere after this season. Better get used to the fact he's back next year. -

This could potentially be the most painful offseason for IUBB I've ever gone through in my 38 years. If we have to watch Purdue go to a Final 4 or God forbid hoist a banner, then spend the ensuing months consoling ourselves by hoping that Woodson is going to suddenly "change things around" for next year all while watching Sisley/Mullins/Haralson go elsewhere then I may sink to lows I never thought possible in regards to our program. Throw in the likelihood that May and Schertz will likely be scooped up by other programs in a few months too, and it could get awfully depressing here in a month or two. -

Why on earth would you hold Dusty to that absurd standard? Let's not lose sight of the fact he's at Florida freakin' Atlantic where anyone will struggle to land players in the Top 250 of any recruiting class. -

Really like that we're going all out for this kid now. I'd hate to see him in another team's jersey. -

My biggest gripe with the Woodson hire was that despite being a coach for a long time, he had no history of winning or exceeding expectations at his stops. Take Harbaugh at Michigan. He had a rough start, even most UM fans thought he'd have more success early on. But they stuck with him because he had already shown he can win at an elite level, such as Stanford and in the NFL. So all they had to do was be patient and optimistic he was the guy to turn it around, because he HAD turned it around before. Look what happened there. Lo and behold wins the conference twice and a national title. This is not the case with Woodson. He's 66, hadn't been a head coach in over a decade, and even when he was, won 46% of his games. If he had been a coach more recently and took a ragtag group of NBA journeymen to the Eastern Conference Finals twice over a 3 year period, then I could look at that and say "ok, let's give him more time so maybe he can do that here." At this point in his career, he is what he is. And he's in over his head. -
The natives are getting restless in Lexington. Don't count out Calipari bolting for a different job if UK gets bounced early from the tournament, especially with the expectations set by this freshman class. Maybe we end up with Fland after all.

Yeah I don't see why his buyout was anything more than $1,000,000. Even that is too much. Who were we afraid was going to come after him given the chance he had incredible success early on? -

You are correct. Didn't know that. He was fired in 2020 after winning 41% of his games the previous 6 years, and only one winning season. -

If you're looking to make a case about an "ism" I really think you'd have a stronger one to make about ageism than racism. -

Archie Miller's 3rd season ended in March 2020, when covid was just getting started. That's a pretty big reason he got a 4th. Nobody was getting let go in March of 2020. Concerns about athletics were understandably put on the backburner. All indications were that we were pretty solidly in the tournament after beating Nebraska the first night of the BTT, so he wouldn't have been fired anyway. He was fired the very next season. -

Plus, Archie would have 100% been in the tournament in 2020 if covid hadn't caused its cancellation. We would have been a low seed, maybe a 10, but we were in the play in game during Woodson's first year. The argument that Woodson got us to where Archie couldn't is disingenuous.
