omg SMU got robbed worse than I've ever seen. I'd boycott the NCAA forever haha.
-
Yeah the thread I'm talking about had Shaka Smart, Tom Crean, and Gregg Marshall as their main candidates, so evidently it's one of those guys. At least according to this poster on TOS.

OK well to put more fuel to this, there's a thread over on the Rivals national board about who Alabama's next coach is going to be. In it, a well-respected Alabama insider (I know, I know) said he knows who their next coach is, and that he's currently coaching in the NCAA tournament and it will be announced after his team's exit from the tournament. He then said to not believe any media reports you've read today, and that Alabama fans are going to happy with the next coach. I don't know, obviously take it for what it's worth, but there seems to be an AWFUL lot of smoke on the Alabama side on this, and none from anywhere else. That means that either 1) it's all bullsh!t and there's nothing to these rumors, or 2) it's legit and Alabama isn't playing this as close to the vest as other schools are.

An Alabama insider on 247 posted Crean to Alabama is a done deal as of about an hour ago. If I had a dollar for every time I read or heard about a "done deal" only to have it not come true, I tell ya, I'd probably have like 8 dollars or so.

Potential fallout from coaching change
AKHoosier replied to HoosiersLoveBanners's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
Kentucky fans get their collective panties in a bunch when you mention Billy Donovan as a possible IU coach. They think just because he turned them down, he won't accept ANY college job. I love it, doubt it'll happen though. Jones is just trolling. -

Is there a podcast available of tonight's radio show? I'd like to listen and form my own opinion haha. -
Just some rambling thoughts going through my head on a Sunday morning. When the Bears fired Lovie Smith a few years ago, they had a good enough record (10-6) to go to the playoffs but their postseason fate was in the hands of other teams who had to lose for the Bears to get in. We're in the same boat. We can't be basing any "decision" on what some team from the Mountain West or the AAC does. When your postseason hopes aren't even in your own hands, especially after a season where you didn't get into the NCAA tournament, that's a problem. Especially when you're a blueblood program. I still think ultimately we get in.

Potential fallout from coaching change
AKHoosier replied to HoosiersLoveBanners's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
Really? I don't think a damn thing is going to happen to them, outside of maybe 2 years probation or something. Sad. -
So we didn't make any tournament last year, but make the NIT this year. I guess that's progress?

BTT: #7 Indiana v #10 Northwestern 6:30 EST on ESPN2 Game Thread
AKHoosier replied to IU Hoosier41's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
Troy hits back to back threes to open the game. Immediately gets taken out. (Sorry, couldn't resist). -
So it seems like what you posted is pretty much all there is to report, right? If we get into the NCAAs and Thon and Bryant sign with IU, Crean stays. If both pass us over and we get beat by Northwestern on Thursday, cementing our spot in the NIT, he'll be gone. The rest is just details that I'll never be privy to. But I'd like a PM if I'm way off base here

Valid point, but Donovan has that instant credibility IU needs to recruit anywhere. Kids growing up in Indiana today like Kris Wilkes, Eron Gordon, Zach Gunn, etc. think just as highly of Donovan as anyone else. Recruiting the state will take care of itself if we were to get either.

Potential coaching change suggestions
AKHoosier replied to Bryan Medema's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
I agree with the first part of your post. I just don't think we're going to make a change unless they're pretty sure we can land a home run type of guy, someone like Stevens, Donovan, Hoiberg, or Sean Miller. I'd be wiling to bet feelers have already been put out to some of those guys to gauge their interest, and if there's only a tepid response, Crean will return. -
Jerry Palm says otherwise, and I also saw an interview with the head of the committee last year who said they look at entire body of work, how you finish the season isn't a factor. Jerry Palm @jppalmCBS · 8h 8 hours ago hasn't been a factor for seveal years now. http://www.cbssports.com/collegebasketball/eye-on-college-basketball/25079791/bracketology-what-data-is-relevant-and-what-isnt … RT @ToddIckow: Is it really more important how you finish the season?
-
No it doesn't, and this is a very common misconception. The committee looks at the entire body of work, from the start of the season to the end, without prejudice to how you ended the season.

I don't know if anyone listens to Query and Schultz on AM 1260, but one of them made a pretty good point yesterday. If a change is made, there is going to have to be a clean parting of ways between Crean and IU in order for us to hire an elite coach. It would make it easier to guys like Donovan, Stevens, Hoiberg, etc. to walk into a situation where the previous coach left to take another job, rather than getting fired. The new coach doesn't want to have it on his conscience that he was brought in because the other guy was kicked to the curb. It makes sense. There's a reason Fred Glass went to ESPN and other media outlets pumping up Crean's accomplishments. He basically sounded like Crean's PR agent by touting his beating of ranked teams, winning the B1G, going to 2 Sweet Sixteens, producing NBA lottery picks, etc. After hearing that, things are starting to add up a little....

Well I'm probably one of the last holdouts up until now, but it's gotta be time for a change. Based upon the talent on this team, there's no reason to miss the NCAA tournament, or even be on the bubble for that matter. PG - 5 star SG - 5 star SF - 4 star, top 50 player PF - 4 star, top 50 player C - 4 star, top 50 player There just aren't any excuses. The results speak louder than anything.

Potential fallout from coaching change
AKHoosier replied to HoosiersLoveBanners's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
Haha I just asked the same question in the Thon thread. You'd have to think an elite new coach like Stevens, Donovan, etc. would want to choose his own staff, but who wouldn't want a lead recruiter like Chuck Martin? It may ease the transition pretty well. Who knows, I'm just as confused as you are. -
Conspiracy theory, since Chuck Martin is the lead recruiter for both Thon Maker and Thomas Bryant - is there any chance maybe Chuck Martin would be retained as the lead recruiter in the hypothetical situation Tom Crean leaves? I don't know, I'm just so confused with all the news and rumors the past 72 hours.

But can he beat more ranked teams than anyone other than Bill Self since 2010? He has a point. -

I think Crean would absolutely kill it at a football school like Texas. There's virtually no pressure there, and he'd be able to recruit the hell out of that state. -

You need to stop putting so much stock in an interview Fred Glass all but had to grant to the BHT. This means nothing. At all. -
Potential coaching change suggestions
AKHoosier replied to Bryan Medema's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
No, we can't afford to do that. We're not going to hand Crean a $12 million buyout check just to give the keys to a young up and comer like Archie Miller. Indiana University basketball is not in a position to do that right now. He's a good coach, but we can't bank on a relatively unproven 36 year old A-10 coach to lead us back to greatness. We're only going to make a change if we have a pretty good idea we can make a home run hire. Like I said on another board, the back channels are going to be utilized long before anything is made public. -
Potential fallout from coaching change
AKHoosier replied to HoosiersLoveBanners's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
If we have a bunch of guys transfer, it will make us a lot less attractive to coaching candidates. I'd worry about Robert Johnson being lured back to Virginia, with them being so good and all.
