I’m probably definitely in the minority on this. But I hated the oh we have to wait and let players development mindset of college sports. The top programs haven’t followed that in decades. They may be developing players, but they had top stars to carry them on runs deep in March and conference titles. Then those stars were replaced with new ones.

Honestly I think NIL and transfer portal has helped college sports.

Expectations for the 24-25 Season
Feathery replied to Unexpectedflash's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
Because the 5th year Trey isn’t as good. Straight up. You want your best team on the floor to close out games. That’s not going to be Trey. He was MW most trusted player in a mediocre team that couldnt make the tournament. This team has a top 20 roster at minimum. I’m not down on Trey, he is who he is. Glad to have him. The other guys are just more talented. -

Who says Trey will be our second best ball handler? I know he had some good assists stats last year. But it wasn’t his natural position and the rest of his game suffered mightily bc of it. And at the end of a game you need to score buckets. Rice, Carlyle, Mgbako, Reneau, Ballo, and Goode are all better at actually scoring than Trey. And with Rice and Carlyle there are plenty of ball handling on the court. -

I don’t consider myself a Trey hater but I just don’t see it with him. I think he is vastly overrated bc he is from Indiana. Great bench player. But if he can’t shoot over 70% from the FT line next season, then I don’t want him on the floor at the end of the game. There are too many talented players on the roster to have him out there. -
That’s a 16-4 conference record just at a first glance and with the current rosters.

Yeah there will need to be some good leadership this offseason by the guys returning to help get the new guys up to speed. Atlantis early in the season will let us know where the team is at. -

Got to give you props on your commitment of positing the downside to every topic. Well done good sir. When I see you post I always want to read it bc I get a chuckle out of it. So thanks for that. -

Going to be an interesting year. At this point I don’t see a team on paper better than what IU has. It’s why I said my expectations are to win the conference. Its put up and shut up time. The boosters are spending Iike it’s put up time. So let’s see a high bar and achieve it. -
I come and go. The end of the Crean era, then whatever that was under Archie, almost had me stop watching IU altogether. Didn’t go to a single game under Archie and only 1 under Woodson. I’m skeptical under Woodson for sure. Would have support a change. It didn’t happen so the best thing to do is support the team. Plenty of doubts but there is a path to being good next season and beyond.

I love the NCAA tournament but I’ll never gauge a seasons success on it. Crazy things happen in the tournament is what makes it an amazing month. Regular season success is a better indicator of a program. And eventually with sustained regular season success a program with the resources IU has will break through in March. Going off of the NCAA tournament to gauge success is like saying IU has only had 5 successful seasons in their history. -
I think he wrongly thought he could get the shooting needed with who was on the roster. His biggest fault is the roster management. And that issue has created so many other issues.
-
Looks like IU is missing a ton of shots not at the rim. Point is the guards have sucked as a group for years. This goes back through the Archie years too. Shafino was fine as a freshman but had no backcourt help. Langford played hurt but also didn’t have much backcourt help. Been my biggest frustration with the program since Yogi. edit. I’d love a Bama style offense. But it’s not happening and offensive style doesn’t get someone fired. So we are playing the system we are playing. The question is with quality guards at what level does it actually work. We are about to find out.
-
lol. Are you being intentionally obtuse? The issue is the players have not been good enough. The system does get open 3’s. Having them shoot more isn’t the answer. The fans wanted more 3’s taken. Woodson never told them to shoot it less. The teams just have been mediocre to bad and the talent hasn’t fit. Totally agree the talent/recruting/roster composition falls squarely on Woodson. Thats the winning argument. The lazy arguement I’m tired of seeing is argh shoot more 3’s, 300th in nation in attempts. Rage. I’m a guy who wanted a change but ppl are just throwing out stuff to be angry about without it actually making sense with the actual causation.
-
No im saying he didn’t tell them to not shoot them. That the player aren’t good enough to shoot in high volume and this their confidence was low and they passed them up. Thats a player problem. The Woody problem is he didn’t recruit quality shooters and chose to play through the post bc of the roster he made. the analytics portion shows to have a better offensive efficiency with the group of players we had it wasn’t to shoot more 3’s with bad players. You complained about being 300 on shooting 3 attempts. The data shows we would have been even worse with the same players shooting it more from deep.
-
Because the guards outside of Shafino have been bad players. The talent has not been there. Ppl complain about in the 300’s but the talent at the guards, where most teams put up their 3pt volume, is the reason. Galloway with volume dropped his % by 20 percentage points. He isn’t a good shooter. Gunn was streaky at best and a terrible 2 pt shooter. The players themselves have said they aren’t coached to pass the shots. The players pass the shots up on their own bc they know they aren’t good shooters from deep. The system has given them open looks and they don’t shoot them. Every game thread people post shoot the ball, bc of all the open 3’s players don’t shoot. I’ve posted elsewhere the stats show that with the rosters we have had the most efficient play was not to have bad shooters shoot from deep. But to play through the highly efficient good post players. If you had bad shooter shoot more the PPP goes down even more.
-
They passed open many open 3’s that year. Could Woody emphasize getting to the rim? Sure. Has he actively said don’t shoot 3’s? No he hasn’t. In fact the players have actively passed up on open 3’s on their own.

Win the Big Ten and make the 2nd weekend of the NCAA tournament. -
I thought this was the thread to discuss a former poster? We don’t need any woody talk in here. lol
-
Yeah he wasn’t shy about shooting but man every time he shot it I thought it was going to be a miss. He was so streaky. A lot of goose eggs when you look up his stats. He reminded me of the old NY Knicks player John Starks. Dude got hot and would put up good numbers from deep. But when he was off it was awful. Gunn had more awful than on games imo. His 2 pt % was also bad and actually shot .03 better from 2 than he did from 3. lol.

Get an instate kid and they have plenty of money to cover a kids tuition and fees -
We can agree to disagree. His system gets players open shots. It’s the PLAYERS passing them up. Why would he design a new offense to get them more open 3’s when they already pass up on the ones the system provides? I think there are plenty of things to complain about Woodson for. I’d argue not having a stretch 4 and roster construction would be at the top. Players passing up on open 3’s and verbally saying the coaches aren’t holding them back from shooting 3’s is not something to peg on Woody or his system.

Scholarship limits are a thing of the past. Michigan football had an extra 20ish players not on scholarship last year, that were given NIL to cover the costs. Purdue could do this for one basketball player if needed.
