They “Retired” Coach Woodson Thread
BGleas replied to Banksyrules's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
I dont think they're trolls. Just think "insiders" are very far removed from what is actually happening. It's like the telephone game from people 4 spots removed by the time stuff gets to a message board. -

Nothing happened. Unfortunately, they just announced Woodson is coming back. All the rest was just internet fodder. -

Even throwing a healthy XJ in there doesn't really make it feel much better. -
This is some of the lamest sh*t I've seen in all the years I've been on these various boards. Insecure much, guy? And yes, that was a bad take I had there.

They “Retired” Coach Woodson Thread
BGleas replied to Banksyrules's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
Yup, IU needs to get back to recruiting tough, skilled basketball players that care about winning, care about getting better, etc., regardless of where they're ranked. Not saying you don't recruit highly ranked, NBA type guys, you need some of them, but they need to fit the mold of the first paragraph (Zeller, JHS, TJD, etc). -

Agree. That was kind of the point of my original thought. The only thing that matters is whether people, specifically the people in charge, think Woodson can fix this. If the powers that be do think he can, then I hope they're making him present a detailed plan. If they don't like that plan, then you also need to make a move. But like you said, he'll be back next year so it's all really irrelevant. -

8 double digit losses. Ridiculous. -

I think whether Woodson deserves another year is irrelevant. I think he probably does "deserve it", but that's not the question the AD should be asking. I think most agree a roster overhaul, to a certain degree, is needed or at least happening this offseason. Many others feel like a system overhaul is needed as well. The only question that matters is if the powers that be think Mike Woodson is the guy to successfully oversee and execute those overhauls. If you think he is then you give him one more year that he may "deserve". If you don't think he is the guy for that then you have to make the move this offseason. I personally don't think he is the guy and now is the time. -
He still cares about IU basketball. For the crap Crean sometimes takes from fans, he still often posts and engages with IU fans, shares clips of great moments during his tenure, tags IU basketball when sharing pics of him with former players, etc. He's been pure class since leaving IU.

I think the point is that Bates is now in a system that supports guards and wings breaking out.

All good! Want to make sure we're on the same page, my comments weren't intended to disparage you or your information. Not at all. I believe you heard what you're sharing from whoever your sources are, etc. In this case, based on what I've heard from extremely relaible people in Boston, I don't think it's accurate.

Yeah, Stevens was never coming to IU the last cycle. He's an NBA guy at this point. Like I said earlier, the person I spoke to in the Celtics org didn't even hesitate with an emphatic "no" when I asked if he thought Stevens would ever go back to the college game. It was a flatout no. This is not a guy that was having a family debate about coming back to the college game, even at IU.
-
I'll be really, really surprised if Stevens ever comes back to college again. He's an NBA guy at this point. Shortly after Woodson was hired I spoke to someone in the Celtics front office. I didn't specifically ask about the IU job, but asked if they thought Stevens would ever come back to college basketball and the answer was an emphatic no.

Agree, but would add that it's also a lesson in patience. Harbaugh didn't come in and immediately start beating OSU, win Big Ten Titles and go to the playoffs. It took him time, and it wasn't too long ago that some had Harbaugh in the hot seat.

I actually prefer the streaming services for the 9pm games. You get your game on time. It removes the horrible planning by the networks where you miss the first 5-10 minutes of your game while the 7pm game fouls the last 2 minutes of a 15-point game.

IUBB vs North Alabama - Thursday, 12.21.23 @ 8:30 on BTN
BGleas replied to Class of '66 Old Fart's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
Tough to say. I think it's on Woodson, and I mean that both positively and negatively. Positively because it's a great move IMO, and he's changing/adapting the offensive sets. Negatively because what took so long and why did we spend the first 5 or so games with 2 bigs on the block and just throwing it to them while everyone stood around watching? I don't think that has anything to do with XJ. I mean, these sets aren't the players gelling, these are schemati, purposeful changes. I'd also expect XJ to play very well in this style (assuming it stays) when healthy. -

Yeah, that's where I'm at too. With the actions IU has been running the ladt few games, Galloway has almost reminded me of XJ when he went on that run the end of the season in his first year here. If we can keep running this stuff for Galloway and get XJ back healthy and have them both running this stuff, then we may have a pretty good team here. I know XJ wasn't playing great early before his injury, but remember Galloway wasn't playing great either, and that was when the offense was essentially dump it to the post with 2 bigs down there and everyone stand around and watch. We could have a pretty good team with Galloway and XJ the head of the snake so to speak, running DHO's, ball screen actions with Ware, and creating space for Galloway and XJ to play with pace and space. -

I just really hope we keep playing offense the way we have the last few games. The offense is much different the last few games and I pray that it stays. While we're still playing two bigs together largely, we're not just dumping into two bigs on the block while everyone stands around. We're running more chin action, horns action, Galloway curling on pin down DHO's, etc., etc. We're playing with more pace and space and using Galloway as the engine instead of running everything through bigs on the block. I don't expect us to shoot that well again from deep, but it wasn't just luck. Many of us that have been calling for more 3's have also been calling for a different offensive system that would create more rhythm 3's, and last night, and really the last couple of games we've seen that. We need to be using our bigs in DHO's, ball screens, etc., to get guys like Galloway and XJ (when he gets back), and even guys like Cupps and Walker going downhill. Our guards still aren't super great, but we need to play with pace and space, and it just creates more action for everyone, including the bigs. -

Admittedly, I haven't come across a great clip of that last play yet, but in what I've seen I don't see anything even close to a foul? -

Yeah, Bates or not, the biggest issue is that we didn't replace that production whatsoever. -

That's why I put the second part of my sentence in there. Woodson is the one that said he had to get there quick. Also, let's be real here, college basketball is almost a completely different sport today than when Coach K took over at Duke. There's really no comparing those situations. Just to be clear though, I'm not saying Woodson's expectations are really realistic, but he is the one who set them publicly. -

Let's give Woodson some credit though. He's been in the coaching game for 40 years at the highest level. He was a head coach in the largest media market in the world. He's plenty PR savvy. He knows what happens when you say publicly that your expectations are Big Ten and National Titles. There's other ways to convey confidence and belief in your program than publicly saying that. Mike Woodson has been around long enough to know that. -

He didn't only tell the players that. He told the fans and the media. He set the expectations publicly.
