Would be absolutely shocked if this happened, but man it would be fun to see Izzo's head explode if it did.

    Red vs White

I'll go with the white team winning that one, since you're running a 3-bigs lineup on the red team :)

Well documented that I don't believe JG is a wing, but I'm done with that debate, can't take an entire offseason of that. With that said, JG is not getting wing minutes over Galloway. I'm not saying Kopp is what we need either, I just wouldn't think Kopp would stay if Bates, Galloway and JG are all hoping him in the lineup.

I'm 43. If I had his earnings today I would retire. I don't mean sit home and watch Judge Judy all day, but definitely would not be working for anyone else. I'd be in complete control of my time and the type of things (work included) that I spend it on.

I would be interested in your analysis that makes you think JG is a good perimeter defender? I've had this conversation several times with @btownqb and we can both speak on exactly where he struggles and why he isn't as of now.

Like I said earlier, in most cases I don't even subscribe to the idea of a "2" anymore. You have guards and wings and quite often they're even interchangeable. Galloway is a wing who's strengths lie in creating offense, handling and passing. He's getting better at getting to the rim as well and finishing. If he can just get to a 33-35% 3pt shooter on low volume he'll been really dangerous.

Agree with all of that. That's something I'm very excited about for next season...multiple guys on the court that can handle and create offense. There are reasons IU played best last season when Galloway and in particular both Galloway and Phinisee were available. Not having them was the primary reason for the difficulties in February and getting them back was a big reason for the postseason success.

Appreciate the data, thanks! Basically, Galloway is not a primary ball handler and is almost exclusively on the court with a true point guard.

So Reneau is replacing JG, Durr and potentially TJD in the forward/big rotation? So our forward/bigs would be Race, Reneau, Duncomb, Banks and maybe TJD? And our perimeter (guards/wings) players would be XJ, JHS, Galloway, Bates, Kopp, JG, Leal, Gunn and potentially Davis/McNeil?

You can consider Galloway in the ball handler rotation, but outside of the NW game I'm pretty sure he always played with at least XJ or Phinisee on the court with him. So he's a wing. Let's simplify it even more. Backcourt (guards and wings)/front court (forwards/bigs). The backcourt/wing guys are: XJ JHS Bates Galloway Kopp Gunn Leal (Recruiting at least one more) Frontcourt: TJD Race JG Reneau Banks Duncomb (Recruiting no more additions and maybe losing TJD) By the way, I look forward to having this debate again next offseason over Banks :) (all in good fun). Edit: Also, if JG is a wing shouldn't that one slot that we're recruiting be his and we should be recruiting another forward/big to replace that role?

But if that is how the staff is viewing it, which i don't think they are, why are they recruiting 2 more wings right now and not a replacement 4 for JG's role there? The staff is/has shown you what they think with their actions by only ever playing him at the wing in a game where half the team was suspended (again, on a team that desperately needed better wing play), and continuing to recruit wings and not bigs. At least to this point, the staff has shown no indication with their actions that they're trying to move JG to the wing. Just to be clear, I'm a JG fan. I think he has the opportunity to be a great small/stretch 4 at this level. He literally just got comfortable in that role, which he is clearly best suited for, and now want to push him somewhere else?

Sorry, didn't think I needed to point out "except for the game where half the team was suspended".

I'll disagree with you on Troy Williams, he developed a lot. He was the 2nd leading scorer, tied for team lead in rebounding and shot 35% from 3 on a Big Ten Title team that went to the Sweet Sixteen. Also, OG was developing nicely before his knee injury. But, both guys played the college 4, where they belonged.

    2022-2023 IUBB Roster Projection

I'll leave it at this (until I get sucked in again :) If Jordan Geronimo was a wing, he would have at least gotten some wing minutes the last two seasons. If he was a wing, he would have gotten wing minutes on two teams that desperately needed better wing talent, and he never even got a look on the wing. If JG is a wing, and his coach thought he was a wing, why is his coach still recruiting two more wings? If TJD leaves, we lost Durr, and if JG is all of the sudden a wing out of nowhere, and we only replaced three bigs with Reneau, then why are we still recruiting wings? This debate is Justin Smith, OG, Troy Williams and Watford all over again.

I don’t think we could have a better situation with the 13th scholarship, if that's what we're calling it, then Anthony Leal. Local kid, works his butt off, plays incredibly hard when he gets in, moves the ball incredibly well when he plays, and literally never complains about playing time or anything. It's infinitely better to have that, as opposed to a malcontent that pissed off about playing time on the end of the bench.

If you think he's a good perimeter defender at this point, then I don't know what to tell you. He's simply not if you watched closely. Not the only game, but St. Mary's had his head spinning on switches. There are reasons he didn't log a single minute in two years at the wing under two different coaches on two teams that desperately needed better wing play. It wasn't just ball handling. Kopp isn't a great ball handler either.

You could have just quoted me. 100%, it's not that close if you watched closely. JG consistently gets lost on the perimeter, loses his man, gets blown by and struggles with the rotation. He's a phenomenal weak-side defender/shot blocker and is strong in the post despite his lack of height, but struggles when switched out on perimeter defenders. Kopp, while lacking some foot speed is a very smart and fundamental defender.

I don’t subscribe to 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 really. IMO you have guards, wings and forwards/centers, though for IU it's really forwards. Even the line between guards and wings is blurred anymore. But, JG is has been a forward his entire IU career to this point and I don't see that changing. Woodson played him exclusively as a forward. This discussion really shouldn't have anything to do with Kopp. Needing an upgrade from Kopp doesn't make JG good for a role he's never played. JG hasn't done a little of everything. He's only played forward. He hasn't been a creator. He hasn't been the ball handler in the PnR, he's always for 2 years set the ball screen and rolled/popped. He hasn't played the wing at all. Defensively he's been really bad on the perimeter when switched onto guards/wings (yes, worse than Kopp).

Again, I like JG. But, does he have more potential than Smith? I was never a Smith guy, but he did far more his first two years than JG has and JG was on teams where more was needed. I'm a JG fan, I really am, love him as a developing stretch 4, but nothing to this point has shown he's a wing. JG is the prototypical college 4 and he has the potential to be phenomenal on that role. Once again, I'm not a Kopp guy. I think he could be good off the bench though. But yes, last season Kopp was a much, much better perimeter defender.

    2022-2023 IUBB Roster Projection

You literally described JG as a 4, a guy that crashes the boards, gets weak-side blocks, etc. (IE. Cleans up others trash). Again, I've never said Kopp is the answer, though he is a much better perimeter defender than JG. But, your dislike of Kopp does not make JG a wing.
