I keep seeing that he wanted the job when Archie got it and felt snubbed. Imagine if we did hire him then. Does he put the same level of effort into recruiting? No portal to fall back on. Does he put in the work to land Romeo? TJD? With no portal I’m sure he recruits HS a bit harder but I can’t imagine he would have had the stomach to take on the full job only 4 years earlier. Only good thing that would have come from that is we’d already be done with him.

This is a much more concise way of how I'm thinking than I've been able to say it. My thoughts have very little to do with having a poor season. That is forgivable. To me this has gone far beyond how he coaches the team and deep in to how he leads the program. We have the perfect opportunity to move on from him while spinning a very positive message as to why we are doing so.

Yes, definitely referring to recruiting. He's done some good things in the portal, and for HS recruits he's done a lot by taking advantage of late decommits from other programs. It's great that he was able to do that, but it's not something to always count on. You cannot build a roster every year only in the portal and/or hoping to jump in on a late decommit. High school recruiting is a much longer game and we're seeing how his efforts, or lack there of, over the course of his tenure is playing out by having zero commits for the future both next season and don't appear to be in very good position with key recruits beyond that. So now we HAVE to hit a grand slam in the portal or cross our fingers another late decommit has interest in being the only freshman coming in? Is it really a gross over-reaction? This pattern over time is where (yes, my opinion) we get to the dereliction of duties that warrant a parting of ways. I much prefer he just retire....definitely agree there. But if he won't, the justification is there to part ways and the message not be that of instability but that of the administration protecting the program and not allowing it to be led in this way. But yes, first and foremost....push like hell for retirement.

What is the risk to the program image if we allow him to stick around while he's outwardly proven the inability, and unwillingness to handle recruiting at this level, while pushing a system that is counter to what is successful in college basketball today? This situation has gone well past just the poor results this season where Woody's bosses can point to a pretty clear dereliction of duties. Dolson, Whitten, the BoT, whoever would be involved in parting ways can do so with a message that doesn't even mention on court results and most reasonably minded people would understand, especially those involved in college hoops, and likely even more so, coaches and recruits. So, the question to me would be is the program image more at risk for parting ways with a former player coach who has shown a pattern of either under performing or simply not performing essential duties of the job, or is program image more at risk by allowing a coach to continue leading the University's flagship program while pretty clearly showing a pattern of either under performing of simply not performing essential duties of the job because he's a former player? To me this has escalated pretty far past a tricky situation straight to a "facts are friendly" situation. Anyone left in Woody's corner who would be upset if he was let go, would have no logical recourse if the facts are laid out to them behind the decision to part ways, again, completely leaving on court results this season aside. This probably sounds drastic, but in my opinion, the administration needs to adopt the mindset that they can no longer allow someone, former player or not, to steward the program in this way, and recognizing that and acknowledging that publicly head on could be a very positive thing. To me, the risk to the program image is far worse to continue on this path any further.

YOU DO IT FOR THE CLICKS!! Nah...80/20 rule, man. I think 80% of ppl here probably know exactly how to take the info you bring and appreciate the hell out of you spending the time bringing that info. I've always thought it was pretty hilarious seeing the ppl who come to a free message board thinking they're getting 100% concrete insider info. Wasn't somebody moaning about their reputation being ruined with people they know b/c they passed along info about Brad Stevens that they got from here? Man, that was a trip. Anyway, keep it coming buddy. But you at least owe me sushi.

May have to switch to some Colombian white next season.

When the time comes we should give a look to the guy coaching against Minnesota tonight. He’s got a terrible team peaking at the right time. I’ll see myself out.

I cannot for the life of me understand why you bother coming here.

A coach who would be extremely popular, understands and respects the program, could handle the spotlight and likely elevates the program back to a level of success we haven’t seen in over 2 decades? I don’t dispute what you’re saying, but if they can’t see Young Brucie is someone who can do that while not acting like Bob Knight then they are not fit to be involved in this decision.

    Fire Coach Woodson

I don’t really follow how they would think that. You don’t talk about the IU basketball program the way Young Brucie has his entire career and also think you’re bigger than the program. Everything he’s said about the program has been in the context of how much he respects and admires the program. Everything about his personality says he can handle that spotlight too. If they see that as being bigger than the program, they’re just way off base.

This is like telling me you're taking me out to a steak dinner and then when the time comes you take me to sushi. In the moment, I'd probably take the steak. But damn I love sushi. So many different ways it can be great, even though there is a chance it can be awful. So let's have some sushi!

I got a chuckle out of that first article. Admits he talks about it being a dream job and sources say he'd take it without reservations....then ends it saying the timing isn't right b/c BP has a chance to become the all time wins leader at Auburn. Hah. Now, what's more interesting is how much this story has leaked and what happens in his post game presser tonight...

    Bracketology and Team Resumes

PSU, NW and Nebraska at home. Crazy to think if we just win those 3 AT HOME (how many seasons have we considered those a given?) we’re 19-10, in 3rd place in the B1G at 11-7 and probably on the right side of the bubble?

Happened to me yesterday. Had an insanely busy day, pulled this up to about 9-10 unread pages. Cracked a beer and settled in to find everyone here went to high school together and people ride bikes.

Unfortunately I think if there will be a PIP for Woody, it will be next season. I had the very not fun at all task of firing somebody recently. We discussed a PIP several times leading up to it. Decided to skip that b/c the pattern of performance and bad habits had never changed no matter what conversations were had in the past and a PIP is intended to actually improve performance. None of us were confident that would happen. Now, I did have a meeting with this person a couple weeks in advance to lay it out for him, which was my attempt to nudge him toward getting the resume updated. My hope, even if it was a regularly scheduled meeting, is that this is what Scotty is doing.
  21. NashvilleHoosier

    Fire Coach Woodson

GM, eh? Ya see, Scotty's just taking a page out of the ol' Stevens family playbook. He's floating this GM role for next season. Maybe even call it a Program Ambassador? Somebody who just gets to hang out and be there but doesn't really have to do anything but smile and shake hands. Who'd be a great fit? Mike Woodson! No firing, no retirement, just a coach sliding into an "executive" (said with a nice little pat on the head) role while we bring in Young Brucie to take things forward. It's perfect.
  22. NashvilleHoosier

    Fire Coach Woodson

Yes, the dreaded vote of confidence. He hasn't even bothered with that. Now, he could just as well be thinking that it won't matter what I say, it will just be taken as the "dreaded vote of confidence" so I'm not going to say anything at all. I also recall him staying pretty silent during Archie's last year.
  23. NashvilleHoosier

    Fire Coach Woodson

Very true. But with Young Brucie, I feel like he has a pretty good "look, this opportunity is something I've always dreamed of, you've all heard me talk about Indiana basketball throughout my career, and with where I'm at, when this opportunity presented itself, I just couldn't pass it up" line he could throw out there and most people would reasonably understand that money wasn't a huge factor. Now, on Scotty D's side, I understand the strategy of if we're going to go for this, Young Brucie, here's what we got, an offer you simply cannot refuse.
  24. NashvilleHoosier

    Fire Coach Woodson

Trying to stay level headed but the silence feels pretty telling. We only have 3 regular season games left. Scotty isn't dumb enough to know there isn't a ton of chatter out there. The fact that he's said nothing at all, especially that he hasn't said anything about him coming back.....well, again, I'm trying to stay level headed. And doing a very poor job.

    Fire Coach Woodson

If a nearly $3M/year raise doesn't make you jump for your dream job, you were never interested in the first place. I'd be shocked if we offered him that. I want Young Brucie, so if that what it takes to 100% get it done, let's do it. But I'd be surprised if we needed to give him a raise at all, based on how he's talked about the IU job in the past.
