I kind of think the low bar should be a team much like the 2011-2012 team. We all knew that the next year was gonna be a great year. He has enough talent on this team to do more but if our young kids are really coming on and will be back another year then that is a good low bar. It can’t be the Mike Davis help is on the way stuff but guys we can see on the court now excelling but not ready for the NBA. Beat case we make a deep run and we have a chance to bring a lot of those guys back.

I especially like the “s” in recruits. Thanks for sharing. -

I agree and noticed his tendency to float with his momentum on his shots. Focus on planting and going up straight and that should help. Maybe spend some time off the ball next season when he comes in but not sure that will work depth wise. I do like how he kept calm and did not turn the ball over a lot. Now he did not score or get many assists either but I would really like to see him as with more confidence and experience -

He did not say they were his kidneys though. Earlier he said if he gave a hint about who he was it would be obvious. Barrel is Jeffrey Dahmer but not sure how he knows about these recruits -

Not a bad idea but if we filled his spot while he was in the portal he could be left without a team. -
I appreciate the response. Was really wanting to hear from Aloha as he made the post and specifically wondered about his second point "2nd - nowhere close to goals and off court embarrassment" year 2, 2nd in BT and 4 seed in NCAAs certainly is not a championship but if that is not trending in the right way and getting close then I want to know what his standards are going to be for the next coach. And as for defending him, I just take issue with takes i find not accurate. I take issue with those and people who just attack him personally like he stole their kids bike.

I might appear to be in the latter category. I just see a lot of things attributed to Woody as fact that for some reason I take exception to. Even if you take year 3 and disregard it completely and you say that year 2 trended up from year 1 and we have a nice roster on paper for next year I still have concerns about 2025 and beyond. How can he recruit HS kids who have to wonder when he retires? The NIL helps keep the portal option viable but you do not have a lot of time to get to know a kid and make sure he is a good fit for the culture. I think things like that are completely fine to question but those rarely seem to be discussed.

When we make our next coaching change what are your expectations for them in years 1,2 and 3?
-
We were one of the favorites in year 2, i remember that. Early in the year many were concerned but TJD had back trouble the first 1/3 of of the year and may have contributed to that. We got rolling late in the year and finished 2nd. Fell short but it seemed we were on partially on track but needed to do better in NCAAs for sure.

That and the Rabby stuff had me ready for a change. But seeing how he did not lose any important pieces this offseason made me rethink the Rabby info. Despite us as fans thinking he has been damaging player relationships by throwing them under the bus, he has maintained enough loyalty to keep them. Sure NIL helped but not if they despised and had given up on him. It even seems as if he got Gallo back (still has him) despite recruiting heavily at his position. No doubt year 3 was bad but since he is here for year 4, and has reloaded very well in the portal I can pause thoughts on him as a coach until we see how this year goes.
-
This works for me. Other than year 3 we would have been on track right? HoosierAloha seems to have thought we should have been on a far more aggressive schedule

Has anyone declared him great? He had a great portal haul, and that is certainly part of having success in the fall but on court results will trump all else
-
Appreciate the feedback. Was not a fan of the presser comments re his players but when all the key players stayed as they did last year I have to think that demonstrates he still earns players loyalties when we don’t see it. We know that he was told to go watch a HS recruit? I did not like him skipping the sectional games or sending staff. Have not understood his recruiting strategy overall but i honestly think it has changed since he started. I prefer a team with HS kids that develop over time and maybe you blend in some portal kids. However, NIL and the portal have changed things. In the end results matter. He built this team and is responsible for bringing a strong season. The senior day stuff was stupid. I won’t argue with you on that. If he wins he can do stupid stuff. Winning as he defined it is winning big ten and national championships. He can’t do that every year but he needs much better than what we have seen.

How do you know what goes on behind the scenes? Just curious what you are using in order to make these conclusions?
-
The ones in the latter category, well at least several in this group, felt that way before the true fans comment. This level of hate I cannot really understand
-
I think the goal for the program should be to compete for Big Ten and National championships. Woody himself has said this and that is the standard. The timing on this is the challenge. Do we expect our coach to do this from year 1 and every year after? Probably not but we have enough resources that we should see how we are trending that way early and within 2-3 years should be knocking on that door if not there. Woody at IU was trending that way in years 1 and 2. He even carried some of that momentum into summer recruiting and looked on the verge of landing 3 top 15 kids. He swung big and missed badly. He also had some recruiting success in the summer last year landing MM and Ware. He either failed to recruit guards or overvalued Gallo, X and Cupps and that helped lead to a bad year 3. So now what do we do? We were trending upward in years 1 and 2. Some of that with improved play from Archie’s players and some from Woodys guys like JHS, Bates. Year 2 was not enough to meet the standard of competing for national titles but we were on the doorstep of competing for big ten titles. How do we define success at this point. This is the tough point with a coach woodys age and with the reality of year 3. It sucks to be kind of starting over in year 4 but the reload has been impressive but what is a reasonable expectation now. Do we fire Woody if the team finishes in the top 4 of the BT, we get to the sweet 16 AND Rice, Carlyle, Tucker, Cupps, Newton and some new additions give the majority of fans optimism that the next year will be even better. I mean it would be year 4 and the best he did was 1 sweet 16 and probably no big ten titles. I agree this would constitute moving the goalposts and I am not a fan of doing that unless I feel we are on a reasonable path for major success.

I think the quote was there was a nonzero chance there would be a mass exodus and a full rebuild. https://www.indystar.com/story/opinion/columnists/2024/03/12/bob-knights-legacy-fails-iu-as-mike-woodson-keeps-coaching/72929876007/

They can’t give any credit. Yes I know what thread this is but the amount of hate here is sad. I would have been fine with a change this offseason but that was because I believed the Rabby stuff to be true and we would have no players except 1 year mercenaries. I am not sure that would justify the hatred of him but I would understand the frustrations. Since it turned out not to be true and he has built a team with young talent I am don’t understand the continued hate. Perfectly fine to be skeptical but the hate is just bizarre to me.
-
He definitely has some changes to make if he wants to win Big Ten and national titles. I would argue he isn’t lousy but is closer to an average coach and most of us are ready for a great coach again.
-
Kudos to NGW for being basically the lone voice suggesting there was good reason for optimism for IU. His style can be debatable certainly but props to him/her for knowing and believing in this path. Yeah of course you have to win on the court but you can’t expect to compete next season if you don’t also win the offseason. Everyone basically had us on life support with no hope and now look. There is hope not only for next year but we also have some talent that could be here a few years.

President Whitten - 2024 Faculty No Vote

It seems to me, and I have heard this a few times, that for change to occur the comfortable have to become uncomfortable. I get the premise behind this but the problem is that how to put someone else in an uncomfortable position does not have always follow an acceptable and legal script. I think the IU university has done a good job on this so far. Read a flier from University of Florida today that outlined what was legal to do and what was not. That helps but then it is easy to ignore a peaceful protest. Rosa Parks made people uncomfortable and fortunately change followed but it seems then she was the one in danger. I worry that soon one of these road blocking activists will end up dying after getting struck by a vehicle. Those kind of protests seem like they should be forbidden. Someone in a legit panic to get to an emergency is bound to react. But how to allow people to have a voice while balancing this right and safety is going to be challenging if we don’t get a better handle on what is acceptable and when that line is crossed how to consistently apply a punishment that is fair and a deterrent will be a major challenge given how politically divided we are. -
