(2014) PF Marvin Clark to MSU
8bucks replied to ccgeneral's topic in Indiana Basketball Recruiting Forum
These guys are all wings right. Some play low but at their heights I presume at the next level they will be a PF at best. Watching all these big guys at the smaller programs play pretty well during tourney games makes me wonder why we struggle with this. Luke's timing is definitely part of it but I kind of wonder if our style of play is challenging to most 6-10 plus guys. Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners -
It's just my opinion but if your kid can't make it through one year at college without running home to mommy then you've failed as a parent.
I have two in college now and another heads off next year. I have worked with a lot of high school kids over the last 10 or so years in a different sport. Some have great parents but can struggle with things others do not. Have seen kids in a poor home do great and vice versa. Your statement is, as you noted your opinion, but left me curious as to how old your kids are. Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners

(2014) PF Anthony Lee to OSU

People were making the claim, or at least one poster that seemed to know a few players at least, that the players did not respect Crean. So this is relevant as a defense against that claim. My take has been that IU should probably not fire Crean right now - next year perhaps. I say probably though because if there are things going on behind the scene that are troubling then that could change. Players not respecting the coach is just one of those things and this helps show that may not be the case. Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners

Steve Alford doing great in first year at UCLA
Alford hasn't done anything as a coach? You might want to brush up on your history before speaking....I put his coaching record up against Creans any day...
I am not an anti Alford, but how exactly has he done more than Crean? He has done comparable perhaps at small schools but his first chance at a school in a big conference he did not shine. He is doing well in year 1 at UCLA and I would love to see it continue but he did well at Iowa early too. Curious as to your reasoning behind your claim that Alford's coaching career has been better than Creans. Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners -
No disrespect to those guys but those are small parts and only one scholarship. I appreciate the answer Thanks Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners

So if you guys are in the know, how many transfers are likely. You don't have to mention names but curious if there is some potential for more than one. Would also be curious to know more on your take about not respecting coach. Yogis mom has tweeted the opposite a couple of times. I realize sometimes players say different things to friends vs parents and wonder if that is part of the discrepancy here. Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners

So if Noah's foot was a concern the second game it sounds like either Crean was making it hard to prepare for us or he threw Noah under the bus. Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners
I think having gone through all the coaches we have had since Coach Knight, be careful what you wish for! The only reason Davis was a little successful was, he had some of Knights recruits! Everyone is on Coach Crean. We should be on the NCAA for letting these young men go pro before they are in between their junoir & senior year. I also blame the NBA, for letting it happen. Myself, I think IU should fire anyone & everyone, that had a hand in firing Knight! The program hasn't been the same since! Tom Crean has done more to help the program than hurt it! JUST SAYING!!!!!!
Other schools have kids leave early. Michigan did. Thing is their sophomore class has developed much more than ours. Blame for this is more internal since all the external ones you list impact all schools. Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners -

When you bring in recruits that have been low 5 and high 4 star recruits for the better part of their junior and senior years you expect them to give more than what we have seen of the 12 class. Low 4 star high 3 star recruits maybe they start to be tough their junior year but when you can get a top ten class you expect results earlier. This year we saw two from this class get suspended and miss several games. We saw their minutes drop during the middle and latter part of the year. One guy, who is a great guy, cannot even get healthy enough to play. The best player was a McD player and has played a lot for us. He is a very key player for us and it is nice having him. This 12 class is way behind where their rankings suggest they should be. Sure rankings can be wrong but isn't that what we all lauded Crean for being able to do? Find diamonds in the ruff? Look past rankings and find talent? Of the five kids in that class only one is getting it done. Hanner had some "moments" this year but down the stretch when we needed wins, when Noah was not playing well or much, Hanner did not give us much. With a class of 5 or more you cannot hit on only 20%. That is too big a class and too important to sustaining the progress. Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners

Steve Alford doing great in first year at UCLA
8bucks replied to WayneFleekHoosier's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
Regarding Alford, if you consider all his coaching jobs Iowa is the out lighter. Made Manchester a big winner, took SW Missouri state to sweet sixteen and had them good for a couple of years. Rebuilt the Lobos Each place, besides Iowa, he has improved the teams and gotten them to the tourney. Has done well in his conference tourney, even at Iowa. I do think he could be considered if he continues to build UCLA into what we expected of Crean here. The bigger drawbacks are the Pierce issue and is he an upgrade from Crean. Pierce is hard to justify and I will not try other than to simply talk with him about it now and then decide on that. Is he an upgrade to Crean, right now it would be an uncertainty but there are reasons to suggest he could be (if you less at Iowa and look more at the other programs).
I agree it should never be a main consideration. It was an add in for me. My main reasoning for retaining him this year is due to who is available, and the cost to make that change. I just don't think you pay over $10 million to get a guy out of here if a top 5 coach is available. Especially, when there is an extreme likelihood there isn't anyone better than Crean. They may coach better than him, but they can't recruit like him (Woodson). They may recruit like him, but can't coach like him (Pastner). Woodson would be solid in Indiana, but the days of locking down the state are over. You have to be able to recruit outside of the state. I think if we make a move this year, we will again in 3 years.
I do not disagree about maybe doing this again in 3 years. I think Woody would recruit Indiana well but he would probably need help to get some of the out of state guys as you mention. That would likely not be missed on those involved if we noticed it. Ever wonder if the reason this may happen this year is because it might be easier now? I would be disappointed being just a marginal NCAA team next year but if we are that I think he is safe another 3 years or so. I suspect there is some boosters that recognize an opportunity now and would rather pay more than wait. I also suspect that this donor base wants an IU guy. Most on here would want the best guy available but if money moves now then they likely call the shots. We can debate it here, and probably should, but some of these boosters have been more involved than us and I am comfortable to some extent with that. Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners

I know Blackman has his eyes set on the NBA. Woody has been an NBA coach a long time. Woody did a very good job in Atlanta, granted New York is a mess. He still maintains a strong presence in Indy. I am not sure if Bill Smith, his coach at Broad Ripple is still alive but often when Mike was back in town coaching Bill as well as a lot of family and friends came to games. Not just random will call tickets but the returns often included some time spent together. Why does this matter, Bill Smith was highly respected in the Indy area HS circles. Mike would be an attractive guy to many HS coaches in the area. Is he the guy we want, I have no idea but he is very intriguing. Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners
Get over it people... We had a bad year. Time to move on. It's almost spring and the weather will soon be warm. So take your anti depressants and grow a pair. Everyone is acting like self entitled children. It is hard to consistently win in college ball, now more than ever. It takes everyone going in the same direction. The iu fan base has probably done more damage to recruiting this week than ever. Chill out. The world is still spinning. Not really. So say we have a potential recruit considering IU. If he is also considering OSU, do you think that Matta is not using our futility this year against us? You think he is not also showing Creans record in the last quarter of the year to recruits? You could argue that allowing mediocrity to continue instead of making a change is more damaging. Anyone who is getting all antsy on this either way needs to, as you say, grow a pair and let it play out. If Crean stays he has enough talent on the team to do better next year even if we do not get the two recruits we are looking to add to the class. Neither will solve our problems is Noah leaves and we are not hurting for wings. Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners
Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners
No, but if another coach was brought in, the expectations after that buyout would be even more unfair. I don't think any coach gets a free pass. I am 31. I am not naive to the history of this team. I am saying, a new coach comes and makes the tournament. He bows out in the first round, and people will point to that buyout. They will point to that and want the next coach. To me it is funny, because you can't just hit the reset button every year. Lets also be real. If Crean leaves, then it is more than likely we are starting from close to scratch again. Troy (East Coast with Nike ties), Stan (Good friend of Troy and East Coast ties), Noah (NBA), JB2 (Would not come here if Crean is gone)… Beyond that you have normal transfers. With a new coach, you will see people expecting something next year without talent.
This is always a weak excuse for not changing coaches. I know it was more of an add on for you and not your primary one. When you make a coaching change you certainly consider this and generally the new coach recruits the holdovers and freshman to be. You do not always get them all but every year this same situation exists so it cannot be a factor in making the change. Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners
This is why I like how Adam Silver has openly said he wants the NCAA in on their next negotiations, but wants in on some of their policies. They should work together. If the NCAA is strong, it becomes a pipeline of more rounded talent. The NBA will say that is their reasoning, but it is simple. The one and done rule has made it so fan bases can't become attached to a player like a Vic. A 3 year player who improved and became something special. Now more IU fans watch Magic games than ever before. It is free advertising for the NBA, with a built in interest for your favorite players. ESPN hypes college games as much if not more than the NBA at times. This would be good for both.
How has the one and done rule impacted Vic? I would love to see something that, if they go to college they are here two years at least. Just not sure what the connection is to a 3 year guy like Vic. Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners
There was an article that stated Noah's mother wanted him to come to IU not just because they are a blue-blood basketball school but because of the emphasis of education that Coach puts on his players. I think he will stay until he gets his degree because it is important to his mother. This is also where I respect Yogi's mom on her views and how she has stressed to him the importance of getting his education because you never know how long you will be playing in the NBA. It does come down to those multi-million contracts. I think he stays.
I saw a different article right after he committed that talked about how IU helps get kids ready for the next level (NBA) and that was very appealing to him. He is going to school so he can excel in his chosen profession - the NBA. He will leave when it is the most advantageous to do so not because he has a degree. He can get the degree any time. In fact, I would argue it would be better for him to get his degree later when he can pour as much passion into that as he does now for basketball. Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners

The fan rumblings start and are often representative of the alumni rumblings. Here it is a mixed bag. Seems most who are dissatisfied are not expecting him to be fired this year. This is the precursor and can be forgotten about if he can get us back into a place where we are competing each year for the BT crown (do that and we are likely national contenders often too). We underperformed this year. In the NCAA and BT tourneys last year. No room to underperform next year. That is what these rumblings really mean. Sure some are freaking out and expect a change but most are simply looking for the seat warming switch. Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners

I like our uniforms and like no names and like candi striped warm ups and guess what, I am not being recruited. Keep the unis if you can but if you have to change I am not going to throw a fit. We changed our uniforms before. Trunks got longer and tops got tighter. I think the right coach can sell what we have to most kids but if that is not the case or an if an obstacle then respectfully do what other top programs are doing. A lot of people did not like the "thug" look the baggy shorts suggested and yet we changed our shorts because it really was not a big deal. Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners
