Coach Crean looks at Small Ball Tape
8bucks replied to IU Hoosier41's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
Why not top 25? Four top 20 classes in a row? Great developer of wings (we have more wings that BW3). Great eye for talent. Two McD's. All these point to a top 25 team. Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners -

Who Will Be IU's Next Commitment
8bucks replied to rebelhoosier848891's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
I was surprised our current class was ranked in the top 20. So I think that gives us 3 or 4 top 10 classes and another top 20 we should be strong this year. Sure we lost 3 guys to the NBA and one big transferred unexpectedly but that is such a small amount of the kids from these 4 or perhaps 5 classes. So we have several consecutive years with recruiting classes ranked high. We have a coach who is great at finding the diamonds in the rough. This means the kids that are not ranked high are sometimes steals and thus our actual class strength/rank should be even higher. Plus we have a coach that is great at developing talent. So even with the top guys leaving, we should be fine because Crean can take unheralded guys and develop them. Something does not add up. The last third of the 2013 season and the 2014 season were terrible considering all this. I am hopeful we just had a few bad eggs and am expecting a top five finish in the BT. Not trying to sound doubtful but how much have you seen him play with the team? I presume that is the basis of the claim. It would be good if he can push in practice and give us perhaps 10-15 mins a game. Great for anything over that. Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners
To be fair, I'll go ahead and trust the guys actually paid to evaluate his talent. But yeah interesting perspective. Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners
I would love to see Him really exceed. In fact I would prefer a coach who can take average talent and develop them vs a coach who only exceeds with top talent. That said, the paid scouts ranked him low didn't they? Combined with the collection of offers from low mid majors the paid coaches were not willing to bet on him yet either. There were some suggestions that a year at prep school and he would likely be a big time recruit but it is hard to argue he is that now. With our limited depth in the middle there will be opportunities for him. I am hopeful he uses this year to improve and instead of blowing up at a prep school lets just have him do that here.
Crazy how the NBA developments impact how some look at Coach... if you keep Cody or Victor, and Noah this year that's 3 straight years in the top five/ten...
To be fair Crean is compared to other coaches at Big programs. Those coaches also lose kids to the NBA and transfer. Sure we would have been incredible had Cody, Vic and Noah stayed longer but that is hardly exclusive to Indiana. Good numbers at the nationals but my trepidation is related to the other programs pursuing him vs me not knowing about him. You would think those numbers would have gotten some others attention as well. Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners

OT: Possible Move to Richmond, VA

Glen Allen is an area I travel to for work often and seems a really nice area. Just north of Richmond where Carmel would be in Indy. Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners -
Most coaches never stop recruiting, and nobody said that he's an Impact Talent. Holt would be a guy that adds depth at a position that IU desperately needs help at. We've got one scholarship to use, and Crean hates to keep schollies in his pocket, so he's trying to use it on a player that very well could help IU down low since that is by far our biggest weak link. But you are right, bringing in a player right when school is starting is very rare. I can't think of a player added this late, maybe ever. I know that Michael Hermon, who played on the 94 team was a very late addition, he was a guard out of the Chicago area, and he only lasted one year at IU, but the one similarity between Michael Hermon, if you've ever heard of him, and Emmitt Holt is they both are players that filled/fill a position of need. In 1994 IU had no athleticism at point guard and nobody that could create off of the bounce so Coach Knight took a flyer on a kid that was a playground legend out of the Chicago area. Fast Forward 20 years and now IU has basically 4 points per game returning down low between Hanner and Devin, and un proven 7 foot project in Jeremiah April. Why not bring in a kid at a position of need, who was a finalist for the New York State Mr. Basketball with your last scholly if he's available? I'm just glad that Coach Crean never stops from trying to improve his roster.
Some insiders suggested our over signed position had a negative impact on our ability to land Gary Harris. Similar situation. We add Remy late the year before and then Gary become the over sign. If signing a marginal 14 player negatively impacts 15 why do it. Even if it does not turn off a kid it does limit the kids we can sign in 15 during the early period. Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners

I would have felt better had Carlton had their best player and head coach. We did not have HP so there is some balance but would have preferred a win with those guys included. Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners

(2015) SG Prince Ali to UCLA
I'm definitely in the sunshine pumper category as well. My opinion is that there is no point being negative about a passion you have. Being an IUBB fan is nothing more than a passion/hobby in my life, I don't need to let it become a negative influence. It's something that excites me and entertains me. There are plenty of more important things in life to bring me down. Sent from my place of advanced, analytical thinking: the toilet.
So we could miss the tournament for the next 3 years and you stay positive? Not saying it will happen but using your description it sounds like you are saying you would never question things like do we have the right coach. Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners -

Teri Moren Named IUWBB Head Coach
Besides, Demarcus Cousins and Terrence Jones were notoriously awful to be around, and James Young would more than give Hollowell a run for his money in the baked and uninterested category.
Yeah but in the Crean era we have a few less sparkling candidates. I agree with the idea that it is nice to have kids interested in academics. The group of Hulls, CWat, Vic and Cody combined high level play with academics. That is the model I prefer but the model we had before this and the one just after were suspect. Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners

Perea not with Team due to VISA issues
8bucks replied to djsalway's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
Visa's are tricky. If you have travelled abroad enough you probably had some similar situations. We went a few years back and had to also have an FBI clearance. By the time the Visa cleared our FBI clearance expired. It would be nice though to be able to work with the Canadian Government on this so that neither the guest nor the host country are left looking bad. Not casting blame but I would hope the Canadian school/organization that helps coordinate could have some pull with these kind of things. That being said, love CCG and what you bring to the forum. Contributors like that I cannot extend enough Grace to in repayment. Never ban the General. Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners -
