2018 General Recruiting Thread
8bucks replied to WayneFleekHoosier's topic in Indiana Basketball Recruiting Forum
I know that we want DG but I would like to get RP because that would be yet another guy that Archie targeted and got. At times with Crean he would seemingly still get a pretty good kid but one that was not the initial target. I am far more comfortable with the recruits we get, regardless of stars, if they are guys we clearly target and get. -
(2018) SG - Luguentz Dort to Arizona State

That is incredible. -
I have been having some trouble with the app. Earlier in the week it worked fine, especially Monday and Tuesday. Since then though I am not sure the refresh or updates are working correctly for me because I have not seen any commitments for 3 days now. Hopefully this new iPhone update will fix this.

Just curious with all the other coaches there why would RP notice that or appreciate Archie being there say more than the others? -

Wait who is this Boom guy? Is he a true point or a big. Or is he that guy that dunks a lot at Pacer games. We need more info. -

How have Archie's teams used a PG traditionally? What about his brothers teams? I seem to think that AZ gets a lot of long guys vs traditional PGs but I can't say for sure. -
Sounds like a desperation move. Recruiting has dried up and we have not had a commitment in well over 24 hours now. dws

2018 General Recruiting Thread

Agree which is why I am glad to see what we have gotten this week but I am far more interested in how Archie can get them to play. -
Why is your ability to rebound effectively on the offensive end a defensive strike?
-
It appears that everyone is buying in to what Archie is saying now but as the season goes on if these kids are used to being coddled and he gets in their Grill that could change. If he has to discipline/kick kids off the team then things may go south record wise but that might be an acceptable short term cost for building the culture he wants. That being said, I think they all buy in and we get a top 5 BT finish.

We road tripped up to that game. The team got crushed and so did we by our MSU neighboring fans but it was a great time to be a student. Good football, great basketball, great soccer

(2018) SF - Jerome Hunter Transfers To Xavier

Agree and I think this time around (when compared to when Crean took over) we are capable of winning now. Not necessarily the NCAA championship but top half of the BT at a minimum. If our current players learn to play tight D and if DD and a couple others have good to very good years then we could do better than that. Senior experience from RoJo, Hartman and Newkirk. I think Morgan could have a big year as well. DD stays healthy, plays D without fouling too much can have a big year. Young hungry guys like CuJo, Green, and our freshman pushing to get minutes. All these guys were high 3 and 4 star kids that have talent. Wins are out there now for this group if they buy in, play D and follow their coach. Compete well as a team this fall and next spring there will be some high end 18s still uncommitted. -
Are you talking offers for CJ?
-
What's not to like about it. The team did not plan to bring CJ back anyway.

I think the baseball team has gotten worse from where Tracy Smith had it but it is light years ahead of where we have been. -
A realist but you seem to expect us to have a top 5 class or am I just misunderstanding your comments. You took my realist comment about building for a run in year three then suggested a blue blood would not have to wait that long. I am confused.
-
Man you are really a pessimist. We are capable of a sweet sixteen run. We have the experience and talent. If that talent does not buy in the we won't get there but it is certainly possible. More possible than a top 5 class this fall.
-
We have to be realistic. Crean was not likely going to get us over the hump so we sent him packing. What is the hump, building a championship level program and one that consistently wins at a high level. Expectations for a blue blood are what we have set but I doubt that they will consider things a failure if we don't wing a championship this year or next year. This year, if the kids buy in, we should be an upper quartile team with a chance to make a run in the tourney. If we lose a lot of guys next year we may then reload and build for the 3rd year where we make another run. I think it is wise to say we have blue blood expectations and blue blood capabilities and that is what we are building towards. In the interim I think we could still have sweet sixteen capable teams.
-
It would be great to get some recruits but I never expected Archie to come in and have a great class this year. He has a solid group of talented players on the roster now so unless they don't buy in we should have a good year. If they buy in fully we could even have a very good year. Had we hired an established veteran coach I may have expected a lot on the recruiting trail early but we hired the best up and comer. Going that route may take a little longer. I will not get concerned unless we finish in the bottom quartile of the BT and if we don't seem to be improving during the year. I will be concerned if are not set up for a big run in years 3 on.

To Birds credit between he and Walsh they reloaded the pacers on the fly several times. We had the group that battled the Bulls, the Knicks, the Heat and the Cavs in the conference finals. They were able to find three different high all star caliber players for three different groups (Miller, Granger and PG). We had the team with Artest and Miller that fell apart in Detroit but had talent to win it all. Prior to the fall out from the brawl Walsh and Bird have built several different teams that went to conference finals on a regular basis. Since the had success building those teams on the fly I am sure they thought they could again this time. Imagine if PG had made the all NBA team and could have signed a mega contract. He was very close to getting this (if he had not played like a dog the first half of the year). If he gets that and stays then the pacers are able to build around him as they have before.

Not suggesting VO is as good as PG but this was an interesting stat

(2018) PF Brandon Johns to Michigan
8bucks replied to goonaha's topic in Indiana Basketball Recruiting Forum
To be fair he was not coaching against the quality of players or coaches night in night out that the BT has. Yes he won against some good coaches in the NCAA's but not night in night out. I am not worried about him being better than Crean here but success at a BT school is harder to achieve than at Dayton. -
