2019 Off-Season IU Roster News and Moves
8bucks replied to CrossboneIU22's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
I get Jake and his Pops frustration. So many times it seemed guys playing in front of him were either not productive (McBob, Evan, Race) or did not give effort (Smith). Even if you did not expect to play much, as the season unfolded and guys ahead of you struggled and yet you don’t see the court then you have to figure out why. When he got in he seemed enthusiastic but lost. I think I would have played enthusiastic lost players vs uninspired players and would have been frustrated being a parent. That being said, we don’t know what happened in practice, don’t know if he put in time on his own or did not follow the plan once in the game. Not enough information for me to judge Archie or Jake. Wish him well and hope he finds a place where he can play a lot. Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners -

I get tired of this lazy attack. Tom Allen was a HS coach back in 2006. Since then he has been a fast rising defensive coach. He was a successful defensive coach for South Florida, Ol Miss, Arkansas State just to name a few. Here is a snippet about the success he had along the way. Ole Miss Allen spent three seasons as the linebackers coach and special teams coordinator at Ole Miss under head coach Hugh Freeze. During his time in Oxford, the Rebels went 24–15 and consistently ranked near the top of the FBS in terms of tackles for loss and sacks. Prior to his arrival, Ole Miss had ranked last in the SEC in total defense. South Florida In December 2014, Allen was named defensive coordinator at South Florida under third-year head coach Willie Taggart. In his lone season in Tampa, Allen's defensive unit ranked first the American Athletic Conference (AAC) in scoring defense at just 19.6 points per conference game. Should Glass have done a wider search, probably, but when you replace a coach you either get a mid major HC or an assistant who has had success at a high level. Allen fits the latter and being from Indiana he may be more likely to stay if he has success. Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners mobile app

I was pleasantly surprised when I visited a few years back. Very nice but a friend of mine from Pakistan was looking to take a job there and when looking at houses the realtor would not show him some houses in the nicer neighborhoods. Could have just been her but he decided not to take the job. Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners mobile app

I expect Alford to do well in his next stop. He will get hired by some school that enjoys having a good team every 3 or 4 years. He should stay at the midmajor level as that is a level he can have success at. Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners

2019 General Recruiting Thread

Ranking does not matter nearly as much as getting the kids you target. Franklin for example looks to be a good pick up and even though his ranking is lower he was someone that the staff targeted and went after. Same with Rob. Many of the 2019 kids were have been talking about the last couple of days were not kids we targeted but kids we are going after now that targeted kids have said no. It is harder to get excited about them or feel their rankings don’t matter Hopefully we can pick up the grad transfers we target - our first choices. Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners -

He actually did change with the Charlie Miller, Neill Reed, Andre Patterson class. Dakich mentioned this awhile back. With that class the assistants had been encouraging him to expand recruiting nationally and he had been resistant. If I remember correctly his reluctance had more to do with his desire not to have to travel far to recruit. That class was a far more national class than what he traditionally had and they had success but they did miss the FF. I think that had more to do with RMK than the approach but I think regional kids knew more about what to expect than the national kids did. Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners mobile app

2019 April Evaluation Period
8bucks replied to Class of '66 Old Fart's topic in Indiana Basketball Recruiting Forum
It will be interesting to see if our recruiting has stalled or if the staff can move on from Brooks quickly. I am not sure how active we really were with Lester Quinones or Tre Mitchell but we seem to be behind on one and missed on the other. I remember when Hunter committed last year it seemed to come almost out of the blue so hopefully the staff is in on some options that we are not aware of Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners -
The Season Is Finally Over, Now Where Does This Program Go?
8bucks replied to JaybobHoosier's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
We still have a lot of fans that would have grown up passionately dreaming of playing for IU. Unfortunately, we are all in our 40s and 50s now. I have been promoting the IU idea to my kids for nearly 30 years and outside of a couple of teams we have not had anything for kids to be passionate about. Sad but true state of the program. Love how the ACC got spanked overall. If one team got in, love that it is Virginia. I got really tired of all the ACC love going into the tournament. Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners

The Season Is Finally Over, Now Where Does This Program Go?

I agree but Archie has to progress next year and answer some of these questions. If the list of questions grows or next year is worse then I don’t think he will get to 4-5 years. Some of the questions aren’t that hard to answer. As you mentioned with Leal, that might be another Franklin like pick up and if he gets some more commits ranked somewhere between him and where Hunter was I think that will be a healthy strategy over the long haul. The Season Is Finally Over, Now Where Does This Program Go?
8bucks replied to JaybobHoosier's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
My point isn’t that recruiting has stalled but that there are a lot of new questions right now regarding whether or not Archie is the guy or not. True missing on one recruit does not definitively equal stalled but it does currently add more doubt. That was the point of my post. That while the macro measure of where we are after 2 years may suggest we are on schedule there are several micro concerns surrounding Archie and the program. I am hopeful that we start to see things that answer some of these questions or resolve the doubt but for now they are fair concerns. For example, if we go and pick up some legitimate recruits or grad transfers (especially ones that are likely to play a big role) then that will he’ll resolve my concerns that recruiting has stalled. Brink would be a good get but probably not at the TJD or even Franklin level. Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners mobile app -

I like both Franklin and TJD but they committed back in the fall. Since then recruiting “seems” to have stalled. No one knows what traction we really have behind the scenes with kids and it is possible that the staff is being patient. However, there is a legitimate concern now that since the fall our recruiting has stalled. Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners mobile app -

Being “on schedule” might be accurate on the macro level but since we look at things in the micro level it is good to get this macro reminder. That being said, there are legitimate concerns that developed this year on the micro level. That mid season slide, questions about his ability to coach a one and done, currently stalled recruiting, challenges getting players to play with effort, 3pt and FF shooting, and limited examples of player development (that differentiate us from other teams our level) are all red flags that give concern that Archie may have trouble becoming a top tier coach at IU. I am hopeful Archie can get it done here and that we can somehow build a strong team (like Purdue did this year) with unheralded players. But there are many legitimate concerns after 2 years. Most of these concerns are just unresolved questions at this point. Some are acting as if Archie is definitely bad in these areas and we just don’t have enough information to conclude yet. I would feel a lot better if we had fallen a little short but had competed hard every game. I would also feel better had our recruiting momentum not stalled. I still have hope but i would have hoped our list of doubts about our coach would have shrunk but the way this year went that list got bigger for me. 2019 Off-Season IU Roster News and Moves
8bucks replied to CrossboneIU22's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
I agree but there is an approach that helps win now but doesn’t necessarily create a sustainable situation. In fact, we had someone take the win now approach and we did have some success but at the expense of rules and culture. You could take shortcuts (cheat) or get kids who can play great basketball but might not want to go to classes or might like to make some extra money doing some illegal things. Archie has a tough road now since he is already in year 2 and what should have been a better year for us ended up being a disappointing season. There are legitimate questions now about Archie’s ability to connect, motivate and coach high level players. Similarly can he work with one and done type kids while not alienating the multi year player. He probably needs to find hungry, lower ranked kids who want to put in extra time to improve. Initially this might be a young team that hopefully makes the tournament (even if barely). But at the same time, you have a core from which to build on the next year. He is going to need some kids to play above their ranking in order to get us competitive next year. Purdue did that this year so it can happen but I hope Archie does not try and shortcut the process (unless he is really good at it ) Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners mobile app -

No one is probably great at that approach but we have not had this staff along enough to say we never get anyone who is recruited that way Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners mobile app -
I would also have to factor in the current state of the program regarding things we really don’t know about. How many kids on the roster now that Archie recruited are looking to transfer. Has he lost momentum recruiting the state? What do I think as AD (with more knowledge than I have as a board poster) happened to cause our losing streak. And, is this something that might happen again? Before and after that streak we played well. After having Archie now for 2 years, is he good to work with? I know from first hand experience that he does not excel at corporate events. After 2 years is he getting better or is this going to be a problem. If from that I conclude that there are some doubts that he can build a consistent top 25 program in the next 2 years with obvious trending in that direction next year then I develop 2 plans. Plan 1 is to develop a strategy to reach out to Beard. Let him know you have interest in only 2 coaches at this point in time. Him and Archie. If he would have interest you explore every option to see if he would accept the IU position now. Some coaches will not talk unless you have an opening but I would find a way of arguing that our second choice is Archie and we are not creating an opening just to talk. I would emphasize that we are a patient school as we gave Crean a lot of time. Plan 2 is to stay with Archie and see if he develops into that next tier of coaches. Hard to pull off #1 without having Archie being aware but I would try. Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners mobile app

Beard has had success at 3 schools now. At TT he is proving it at a high major conference which makes it all the more impressive. If there were on thing that would make it more of a slam dunk it would be sustaining that success through a couple of recruiting classes. Since he has only been at places a few years, it is hard to tell if he can recruit well over the long haul. His quick retooling of this years team is impressive though. Archie has success at one location and at a lower level. Sadly though if there was any momentum to replace Archie it would likely result in us moving laterally or bringing in Alford. To get Beard to come here, where RMK won’t really acknowledge exists, would be difficult though. I don’t trust our admin to get even close to bringing him in. Seems you are as obsessed defending Crean and each time you post (and mention Crean) someone responds and mentions Crean. You also mention a desire to focus on the current squad which has Crean recruited players but you act as if Crean’s influence has been gone 2 years. I have no idea if Archie is the right fit or not but part of the hole we are in is that we are changing from a offensive based team to a defensive based team. There could be culture issues still from guys who started off playing for Crean and are now leaders in an Archie system. That could have an impact. I put more of the struggle on the current squad and coach than Crean but his time here is still impacting the current squad to some extent. Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners mobile app -
If we were to send Quinn we might have a chance. Unless I am wrong Quinn still feels strongly for RMK but serves at IU. Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners mobile app
