They “Retired” Coach Woodson Thread
JSHoosier replied to Banksyrules's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
1) They hired a guy with zero college experience that hadn't been a HC in almost 10 years solely because he played here 40 years ago. They'd have to grab a shovel to get under that bar. 2) Probably Stevens type pipe dream then say screw it, ala Woodson hire -
Rhode Island's 5 fans might disagree that Miller's one sided style works.

Wait, defensive rebounding is allowed?

Make the call and find out. You could always come up with a reason why any coach wouldn't. May could like Florida weather over Indiana. -

Also mentioned Nate Oats, that's a call IU should make. It's Alabama, Spring football is more important than basketball. -
Pitino and Calipari weren't good in the NBA. Difference is they had some success at the college ranks before jumping to the NBA so college teams knew what they could do. Pitino won 64% of his games and had a FF at Providence before the Knicks job, then won 81% and 5 trips to at least the Elite 8 with UK before the Celtics. Calipari won 73% at UMASS with a Sweet 16, Elite 8 and (vacated) Final Four before the Nets. Woodson was entirely NBA with no college experience. NBA teams didn't give him another HC job after the Knicks then IU hired him because he played here 40 years ago.

So he's actually worse than Miller in at least one way and some want him to stick around. May as well replace Assembly Hall with a memorial marker for what used to be a top notch program. -
Honestly, needing a soon to be 66 year old to change as much as Woodson needs to is a reason to move on.

Who has said he didn't? He bounced around the NBA as a player for 10 years, longest time with any of 6 teams was 4 years. Then spent most of his coaching career as an assistant; 9 as a HC and won a whopping 46% of his games. After the Knicks fired him after 2014 (and a lower win% all 3 years) no one gave came him another HC shot until IU and he was out of coaching completely for a couple years. He wasn't anything special.

At this point I'm starting to wonder if they're related to Woodson.

Crean missed the tournament 4 times in 9 years at Marquette and every year at Georgia. He wasn't some beacon of consistency. He had good times, no one will deny that as I said though making the tournament these days isn't a big accomplishment. He wasn't just fired because he wasn't good enough to win a title. He turned a lot of HS and AAU coaches away from him because of his personality. -

You don't need to recruit Indiana alone or have a roster almost entirely of IN players; and it's good to have a staff with connections to other areas. We should be strong in Indiana and the border states though. -

We'll be going into year 4 with a roster that needs completely overhauled. An overhaul needed because of failures by this staff, not Archie Miller; because of failures by a staff that some want to keep. We need more shooting, more athleticism, more depth. We have one commit, one that's supposed to be a good shooter but isn't much of an athlete. -

The last time Bob Knight missed the tournament at IU was 1984-1985. With Crean missed a 64 team field plenty of times, Crean even missed the NIT once in those last few years. Down years do happen, but expecting to make a (now) 68 team field every year isn't setting the bar very high. -

If IU was actually serious, making the tourney would be absolute bare minimum expectations and the play in game would be a disappointment; it definitely wouldn't warrant a raise. Instead it's viewed as a big accomplishment and gets a pay raise. I'll say it again, take away the name Mike Woodson and not a single person would like this hire. -

At this point I'm not sure it is fixable, the administration has been so unserious for so long. This past search I said if we botch this hire the program might never come back, then the administration turned around and hired a guy no one else wanted. -

Those results keep you dafe at a place as deeply unserious as IU is. You have to be deeply unserious to hire a 60 year old with no college experience that hadn't been a HC in 10 years; take away the name Mike Woodson and not a single person here would've called it a good hire. -

Or he just made the tournament. As if making a 68 team field, once via a play in game, is a big accomplishment. -

6-7 games. So 13-15 made 3s, 20-25 made FTs and 60-70 offensive rebounds allowed.
