We’ve taken 22+ threes in a game 16 times during the 103 games Mike Woodson has coached at IU. 15.5% of his games. We did it 4 times in 33 games this past season. But, sure, we’re going to start averaging 22+ a game now. Very likely.

Maybe easier than admitting that Woodson is a lousy coach that either can't, or won't, change. Which would also mean the one place stupid enough to give him another shot at HC was too stupid to move on.

Hypothetically, how would you feel about Dolson NOT going after a new coach this spring bc he/they sincerely believed they could land Br@d $teven$ NEXT spring? Would that change your perspective or lighten any of your criticisms of the admin?

If Stevens wasn't a 100% certainty, I'd say no it wouldn't. Without that certainty it's just "maybe we can land the white whale this time if we stick with the crappy coach another year".

Sorry, you don't stick with a lousy coach like Woodson in favor of Stevens unless Stevens is a guarantee.

    Don't confuse a couple of billionaire's $2M with "muscle".

Woodson still has to coach this team (and there are still 3 open scholarships). So far, Woodson has not impressed me with his "work" this off-season - I'd expect the same results from 90% of the regulars on BTB with $6M to spend.

We get chastised for posting reality on the pro-Woodson threads... now we got the sunshine pumpers trying to pump in the Fire Woodson thread.

    FIRE MEDIOCRE MIKE WOODSON TODAY.

And for billionaires 2m isn't a drop in the bucket.

Yep. He was always going to get players, no one said he wouldn't, especially with 6m to spend. He's still the same Mike Woodson that has admitted the 3 isn't a point of emphasis. The same Mike Woodson that got fired from the Knicks after his teams had the same problems we're seeing here, then never got another HC gig.

And if Chris is right that Woodson is already tired of this portal season it just shows he wants the NIL money to be a substitute for actually doing part of the job he was hired for.

A portion of this fan base spent the last decade complaining because we wouldn’t “play$$$” the game. Now we have fans upset that we are winning the NIL game. “Just throwing money around”!  Yea that is how it works now and I’m glad we are throwing some muscle around.

I don't have a problem with them spending money. I have a problem that they're doing it so much now just to avoid having to admit it was a mistake to hire a guy no one else would've answered the phone for.

Really the offseason further supports those who wanted Woodson gone. Imagine these NIL resources with a coach who actually knows what he’s doing (and wants to actually do the job, not just have the job title). Can’t give great ingredients to a mediocre at best chef and expect him to cook a world class meal. But our donors apparently only want to give the money if Woodson’s the coach, so we’re stuck with him. I anticipate he’ll do just enough to keep his job (given IU’s astronomically low standards), and we’ll be right back here next April in the purgatory that is iubb fandom.

Yep. Like I've said, imagine a good coach having this support instead of just trying to buy a team that not even Woodson can screw up.

I wanted Crean gone and the last two hires make him look good.

Yeah, like CandC said, it’s Nebraska’s mating call. I think it was an IU thing back in the day too, but NU definitely owns it these days and I even think it’s their athletic department’s main hashtag. Basically their version of Kentucky’s BBN.

I thought Kentucky's mating call started with 'hey cuz'.

I can say from one of my son's (a bball player) experiences that a knee scope might include a secondary procedure for damaged cartilage that can take months to heal, the first 6 weeks or so of which requires no weight on the knee (crutches). It's not the normal meniscus tear and ortho (that his older brother had, on both knees) but it can happen depending on the damage.

I figured there was another procedure on it.

Don’t remember for sure where I heard it, might of been a YouTube video that was trailing him that I saw,, but I believe he said himself that it was originally diagnosed as a meniscus tear, but there turned out to be more to it. Made it sound like the procedure he had 3-4 months ago was not that big a deal and was precautionary though he wasn’t specific.

It was misdiagnosed originally, he had a microfracture IIRC. He's had a few procedures on it. The procedure this year was reported as a knee scope but that wouldn't have kept him out all year.

So what's the plan for 24-25 ??? IU still needs a backup center and a pure shooter, even if he comes off the bench. My brain cells are active this morning trying to piece together starting lineups and different lineup combinations. Of course foul trouble will play a role in who plays when. He might say it but I have yet to see Woodson yank a player out due to poor play or too many turnovers. Finally IU has depth that we as fans have complained about annually after the seasons starts. Pre season IU's bench is full of all-Americans based on write-ups.

One given ... Baso is in the middle, clogging it up at $1.2M. I also think you have to pencil in Rice and Carlyle as starting guards, with Malik and MgBako with hopes of Reneau improving enough over the summer to spend most of his time outside, yet his inside game is his game.

That leaves Gallo coming off the bench, did he agree to that before grabbing his '24 NIL $$ ??

With depth that IU has based on players "signed" more than a couple of combinations can be played. They can go small when needed with Baso in the middle surrounded by Gallo, Rice, Carlyle and MgBako. Or they can add those four to Reneau in the middle with Baso resting or in foul trouble.

Surely we will not see the "hockey platoon NBA" substitution method EVEN IF there are 10 good players by the end of signing period for '24-'25. I see Woodson sticking to an 8 player combo by the time the B1G season starts.

Of course injuries will be a factor also ... and there will be some, some major or minor, and totally unexpected. At least it is looking like IF that were to happened there are players on the bench that can fill in.

Cupps WILL improve over the summer. The kid is too driven not to. Plus isn't it said that the most improvement is from the freshman to sophomore year?? Newton hasn't played in two years, major injuries and although his videos look impressive, those videos don't include the speed of the game ... Ask Banks about that. IMO anything that Newton can do positively on the court is icing on the cake with no expectations. Leal will play less than he did last year but at the same time will come up with a wining shot or key made shots during a tight game ... but on the other hand would he even be in a tight game with Gallo, Rice and Carlyle and an unnamed shooter at this time?

To run 4 out 1 in and Baso or Reneau in the middle, ALL current roster players will have to improve their 3 point shooting. Isn't that what Woodson said most of the year "we just need to hit shots" ... a few interviewers said they don't miss them or foul shots in practice ... so there is that to factor in. They CAN hit both but for some reason they DON'T on a consistent basis in games.

Just think what that would do to a season of hitting a few more 3's and a LOT more foul shots ???

I know, to hit a 3 you have to shoot a 3 ... still with Reneau and Baso inside, that is a positive in my book. "Layups or Three's may win a majority of games per data but it didn't help ISU in they NIT final nor the PUkes loss.

Defense improvement, LESS turnovers based on the two new incoming guards compared to the bad XJ has to make a difference.

After all this rambling ... it comes down to players mostly and coaching. NO excuses all year ... play the game.

There are so many combos with this group that is already signed on the dotted line, I still don't have an answer on who or what to play.

On the bolded, you hear people say that but it's not always true. Oladipo's biggest jump was between sophomore and junior year.

Realistically I now highly doubt Woodson gets fired after next season. With Ballo, Rice and Tucker (and more to come from the portal) added to Bako et al., the team should (should) be in the hunt for a B1G title, and regardless will likely do well and get at least a couple of NCAA tourney wins. The U won't fire him if that happens - and it is likely to happen.

Do I think the U should move on from Woodson? Yes. But just don't see it now.

Really, really hope Woodson finally learns what the arc is, so we can actually get past the 2nd round, but we'll likely be a good team regardless

I think it was always going to be that way once they were stupid enough to bring him back. If he so much as made the tournament, even just barely, they'd look for an excuse to bearing him back. IU has shown they're too concerned with optics and they would not want the black eye of firing a program legend.

Spoke to some people. Their concerns about Woody still not being engaged enough in the whole recruiting, especially in the portal are all still there. He's doing a little more but not still nearly enough as people would like him to. He thinks as long as the money is there, he'll be fine. Take it for what it's worth but that was passed along to me.

I didn't expect Woodson to do well because he's a lousy coach and no one wanted him after the Knicks fired him. I also didn't expect him to have the mindset that he doesn't have to do certain parts of the job; I figured he'd atleast give it everything he had because of his connection to the program.

What the experts forget is we have gotten several VISITS from some of the best transfers in the portal! Heck, one even committed!!! That’s as good as wins in my book.

That coupled with everyone coming back (expect arguably our MOST productive player from last season) and Woody is fixin’ to turn up the heat in the kitchen!!! This year our problem was talent… not next year. Next season we are going to be rolling in west coast talent. Watch out B1G, Woody iscoming for you, and he’s ready for dinner!
