Right! It’s why not everyone can be happy with the hire. Lots of different requirements.

Earlier on the thread people tossed Pitino under the bus for his dinning exploits. And not wanting him for that. My response was quoted about a Pitino post. You’re hang up on me saying people want a saint seems to have struck a nerve, which is ridiculous.

Mentoring is a bonus. The days of old are over. You get a player for a year at a time now with free agency in college sports. It’s about winning. It’s a true minor league now. Kids aren’t here to play school as a former Ohio State QB once said.

Go back and read the thread again. People want a saint. That’s my opinion from reading this thread. This isn’t putting down any person of faith, as I am a person of faith. my opinion is we need the best basketball coach. I don’t need a morally superior person as that head coach. Look at Harbaugh and Ryan Day. Both great people but play in the grey and won it all. I’m fine with that level of dark arts. I’m not ok with what Beard did.

I was discussing Pitino and by proxy Wade in my own mine when I wrote that. I see Beard as a different issue.

Except people want their head coach to have a resume of a pastor. Anything less and they aren’t good enough.

You can hire a coach to start effective June 1. Just saying. He can unofficially be recruiting and can hire an entire assistant staff while he waits out a timeframe. Don’t believe it will happen but the show cause isn’t an issue.

Yeah I’m with you on better options. I think once you get past Stevens, Pearl, Oats, Donovan, Drew etc, then it becomes much more of cutting hairs between quality coaches.

Haters gonna hate. He is the GOAT and a Colts fan hate him bc he is better than Manning and kept the Colts from multiple Super Bowls. I say this as a 49ers fan.

To me Cronin is a guy with strong NIL has us a top 4 seed regularly. Which means in the hunt for deep runs. After that it’s a crap shoot. But if the floor is making the tournament each year, challenging for the Big Ten annually, and then see how the tournament goes, I’m down for that.

I’d take Wade. I’d take Sampson too. The rule Wade broke was actually illegal for the NCAA to even have in the first place. I actually like his cockiness and it’s needed at a place like IU imo. We can’t have some meek coach. We need someone who has a personality big enough for the job. This isn’t just an X’s and O’s job. It will take someone with a personality big enough to handle it all. Think Bruce Pearl, Wade, Oats, Stevens etc.

I think the May extension sheds some light on the search imo. I don’t think May signs his “low ball” extension if IU was after him. I think he would have got a lot more money if he could leverage an IU offer. Which tells me that Dolson either has his guy or he is still in discussions with guys he rates above May. Who those coaches are, I’m unsure. But there are many coaches I’d rather have before going to May, if the money was available for buyouts. Sounds like we have money to spend so…. May also took a $1 mil raise, still less than Archie at IU 8 years ago. And the buyout is still low at $7.5 mil. So he says he is staying at Michigan because he doesn’t have an IU offer. He also couldn’t leverage IU interest bc Dolson isn’t there yet and possibly won’t be. But if plans fall through May has a manageable buyout for IU to get him if their top options do not pan out. I don’t believe all the top tier options have been exhausted yet. In Dolson I trust and I think IU will be in good hands moving forward with whoever they hire because it will not be someone like Brownell or McCollom. It will be with someone who has a track record of success.

Quinn screwed us last year. I questioned May last year. But if it were May or Woodson, it’s a no brainer.

Sam Webb? If he said a gut feeling it means it’s a done deal and waiting for public announcement. I wouldn’t believe anyone but Sam. He is the unofficial Michigan athletic department mouthpiece.

I was listening to a podcast on my way home from work today and they said Iowa’s collective actually ran out of money and the person running it was paying the players out of pocket to fulfill the contracts. So to me sounds like the boosters at Iowa are tapped out already. Only the schools with the mega boosters will rise to the top until some sort of collective bargaining occurs. This actually helps IU in the short term to get things going. I think NIL is great. Woodson is just a bad coach. These same players under a good coach is a top 25 team and the talk of overpaying players goes away.

I think whoever gets the job needs to have the energy to match what the job demands. They need to be able to handle the “social” aspects of meeting with donors, high school coaches, and give speeches. Just because someone is younger doesn’t mean they will be here for the long haul. If someone is elite in college and young they can go to the NBA, see Donovan and Stevens. And to me if someone is 60-62 years old will give a solid decade, someone in their 50’s could give 2 decades. I don’t think we should take a flyer on a young coach by emphasizing a multi decade hire when the game will change and we will likely need to change to the “meta” of that day. NIL is now the lifeblood of every program so coaching X’s and O’s will be paramount for national championship success imo. The talent should always be there moving forward. The HC will need to be superb at roster construction and getting the pieces that make it work.

We need winning. Give me an established coach with a proven track record vs someone without a resume. Young and energy means nothing if they can’t win. With NIL get the best coach and we will be fine. Now that doesn’t mean that excludes a younger coach. But age shouldn’t be a requirement. Coach Cignetti is in his 60’s and has plenty of energy and excitement. And I think Dolson will go for experience, all things being equal.

Style slow. But he is successful and won a national title. He would need a GM who could handle the NIL, as that seems to be the reason he retired. But IU has NIL covered so it could work. But IU also fired his sister. So probably not likely.

There are photos of what beard did to show he did do it regardless of charges. Golden got backed and a release by his lawyers said there was zero evidence that he did what was accused. Add in Florida backed him it appears that the allegations were not true. That’s my guess as to why there is a difference in peoples opinions.

Not sure how you don’t hold him completely blameless. Unless he is ready to retire or quit his job, he had no option once Stevens said no. Even had he quit, the next person would have been forced to hire Woodson. You’re putting blame on a middle man for a decision made by top brass. Would it be your fault if your boss forced a decision on you and refused to listen to your opinion on the matter?
