They “Retired” Coach Woodson Thread
PartyintheVillas replied to Banksyrules's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
Cashy is providing some great entertainment for me on a day where the work VPN is down. The process is perfect, but also mostly it's been bad hires Every argument Cashy doesn't like is only emotional -

Bob Knight would not succeed at Indiana University as the basketball coach in 2025. Am I talking to an old man yelling at the moon? -

How Bob Knight was hired is not relevant. That was over 50 years ago. It's like saying how George Levis was hired is relevant to how Bob Knight was hired. Is how George Levis hired also relevant to this current situation? Are we using the transitive property for hiring processes that are a half century old? -

There have been several but you are here to argue in bad faith with an agenda to protect certain people, not the university and basketball program. -

I was an Indiana athlete, I worked in the athletic office, I was a college coach at other universities, I have friends and former teammates that are currently college coaches at major universities including Indiana University. I have a very clear picture. -

Dakich might be accurate with this take, but he is also wildly inaccurate, and agenda driven for many others. It's 9 o'clock twice a day no matter what. -

Now, here come the outright lies. Bob Knight was hired before any current processes and people were put into place. Also, a single data point is not conclusive evidence. Citing Bob Knight is an appeal to emotion in this argument. By saying that the process is the same that hired Bob Knight, you have completely outed yourself as not an insider. You are another anonymous internet troll with opinions and agendas. -

I didn't make a claim either way because I don't have the data. However, let's go back to your original claim that an interim coach would only make the season worse because interim coaches largely make it worse. Let's not move the goalposts to interim coaches are not long term successes, which is a completely different argument. Moving the goalposts is a logical fallacy often used in place of facts, logic, or evidence in order to win an argument because of an emotional stake in the argument. It's bad process. Anyway: EddyO (thanks for doing my work for me) Diebler last season at OSU Now, I have as many anecdotal pieces of "evidence" that you do. Interim coaches can change the fortunes of a single season and it has happened numerous times. Interim coaches often improve the fortunes of a team for a single season while also not being retained for long term employment. In fact, that could be considered good process. -

Interim coaches have worked as many times as the short numbers of examples you've given that haven't. You have no conclusive data and only anecdotes that fail to consider the larger picture. Where is the data? Do you know what conclusive data is? Also, EddyO won a national title and is a beloved figure by LSU nation. -

Cashy is a classic internet Machiavellian troll: seemingly above the fray (but really is the fray) and knowledgeable (but without any specifics and only a general and broad reactionary to elicit a response). This board's finest of the sort. I'm more of a regular over at HSN than here, but surfing around for the tidbits of a rumors and news today. This person is a pro at what they do: troll while maintianing an effort to appear intellectually honest. Otherwise, Cashy wouldn't respond to emotional responses him/herself. -

So your answer is no, you do have a couple debatable anecdotes though. -

Do you have any data to back up this claim. Emotions are a very important reason to make decisions. Steve Jobs relied on emotions to build a business. How you make people feel is as important as what you do. Considering emotions is essential to decision making processes. -

Ckathy is displaying a ton of emotion here (pride being the largest), but hiding behind grammar and punctuation. People with insider knowledge don't only react and pass such sweeping judgement as Ckathy does. Furthermore, emotion is an important part of sports and fandom, sometimes it's the best part. To remove emotion is to remove humanity. Ckathy's continued projection of the fanbase being overly emotional continues to miss and ignore the passion and knowledge of the fanbase, which is part of what has made Indiana basketball special for 100 years. In 49 states it's just basketball. -
You're just being a dug in jerk who doesn't want to have to acknowledge Northwestern won the tie, plus continuing to ignore that Indiana finished 3 games behind and never actually was in contention with an all-timer and a first round pick. If you are picking 2023 as your standard for success at Indiana, you and I have different definitions of success for Indiana basketball.
-
and a tie breaker made them 3rd and they were the 3 seed
-
Is this your criteria and you are advocating for Archie Miller to get more years than 4 at Indiana?
-
You can spin the 3 seed as much as you want. You can lob personal insults at me. Still, Indiana finished 3 games behind Purdue in a down big ten and got boat raced by Miami in the second round with an all-American and an nba first rounder.
-
Cal left because he wasn't winning and Kentucky fans demanding winning games. The hired Mark Pope who is more proven at the collegiate level than Mike Woodson.
-
Then why were they the 3 seed in the B1G tournament?
-
It had nothing to do with an irrational fanbase running off a coach. That's just lies. Cal could have stayed, he's the one who started the drama and rumors of going to Arkansas. Barnhardt decided not to play that game. Plus, Cal hasn't been really good for awhile now.
-
Indiana was 3 games behind the winner and technically was third and the 3 seed in the conference tournament. It took a little bit of a miracle run in the Big 10 tournament his first season to make the NCAA tournament. He's never gotten past the second round of the NCAA tournament. If he were coaching Iowa, not bad, he's basically Fran McCaffery though. That's not good enough for Indiana. The roster looks better this season for sure with a big influx of pay to play. I'm in wait and see mode, but like I said, I'll be cheering for him and IU. I just won't be holding my breath for a Big 10 championship.

Mike Davis, Tom Crean, and Archie Miller were all fired by Indiana for losing too much. Mike Davis and Tom Crean were fired by their next schools as well and Archie is well on his way (21-42 in two seasons.) They are not good coaches and did not grow into being good coaches.
