They “Retired” Coach Woodson Thread
steubenhoosier replied to Banksyrules's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
they work at a state university, they are. Despite what people like to believe when they talk about coaches’ salaries, though, they are only paid by the state whatever it is that someone of their educational level and tenure would make on the state’s salary schedule plus a stipend for time spent coaching football; this totals usually to less than $100K a year (often much less). Most of their salaries come from boosters, athletic department funds, shoe and equipment contracts, coaches’ TV and radio shows, and product endorsements A response to the question “Are coaches state employees.” Maybe you should know what you’re talking about before you laugh your @$$ right off… And this has nothing to do with Woodson. It has to do with hiring Pearl with an agreement that his son would be the next head coach -

Sure it would. It’s a public institution funded by tax dollars. Pretty sure there is a hiring process for state employees -

So would promising the son of a head coach that he would take over when dad retires. Would potentially open the university and its treasure chest to all kinds of nepotism and discrimination lawsuits. -
General Coach Candidate News

IIRC, Crean was run out of Bloomington because his teams could only play one way. He had little capability to adjust to what his opponents were doing. Syracuse game was prime example. I don’t watch much SEC basketball but it sounds like Oates’ teams are similar. -

Okay, Blind faith. Don’t think anyone who had achieved a level of success that they could afford to contribute is the NIL initiative would have believed that CMW was going to “crap his pants.” I don’t know if Woodson is going to keep his job or not, but the level of vitriol in this thread towards anyone associated with our basketball program is pathetic. -

He also had a bunch of thugs on his team at IU. -

Most did, huh? So those that funded our large NIL pot of money must have been idiots. Is that what you think? -

Not sure what that has to do with the statement I quoted. That essentially CMW was riding on the coattails of Miller’s recruits -

Trayce and Race were gone until CMW convinced them to stay. Doubt if JHS would have been a Hoosier if Woody wasn’t the coach -
But you make a statement like it’s a done deal when in reality you don’t know anything.

And I agree with you that positive change needs to happen Sunshine pumper is just the kind of divisive term that fractures a fan base. How about not labeling and insulting people who have a different opinion than yours? -

Different topic. Maybe for mods. How do I shut off the email notifications that I have a new reply? Also, when I have replies to my posts I can’t open them until I first hit the search icon. Sorry to go off topic but just trying to understand how this board works -

I know nothing is guaranteed. I know that the pitchforks are out and he has to win asap. Which would you rather go to war with? Battle tested guys from other programs or guys fresh out of high school? -

Read my post. If you think he needs to save his job, he’s not pursuing recruits. If he needs to win ASAP then he’s going to get portal guys -

I agree on doing both, if he has the time to develop the high school guys. He has brought in multiple 5 star guys and re-recruited an All-American. Not sure how you define recruiting but in my opinion it has not been “chit” -

Get what you are saying to a point, but… if there is such a great sense of angst then wouldn’t it be more prudent to get guys who are going to help immediately rather than high school guys who might take some time to be competitive? -

You sure about that? Despise is a pretty harsh term. Maybe in 20 years or so when those of us who remember how great these guys were are gone, you’ll have a leg to stand on. Too bad you don’t have the history to know what they were about -

Understand about being younger and having never experienced the IU program I went to school with and since…I was there through 1979. I’m a lifetime Alumni Club member and have donated tons over the years. More than ever I want to see our program restored to what it once was. My only goal here is to bring some balance. I get it that this year has been bad so far. However, I also know that the last two years we made the tournament, which we hadn’t in the 6 previous seasons. Did the tournament appearances satisfy this fan base? Hardly. Was it an improvement? Absolutely. Those two seasons brought some semblance of positivity to the program. And the way I understand it, TJD and Race were gone until Woodson convinced them to come back. He also developed a pipeline with Montverde that brought us JHS. Imagine where the last two seasons would have been without those guys. CMW has a story he can tell… he knows what it takes to get to the NBA. High level talent wants to hear that. Now he has to learn to bring in other guys who are going to be around 3-4 years to compliment the one and done guys. I think he has earned another year. Impatient and rash decisions don’t make for a successful program. Sorry for the long post, and to clarify these are just my opinions
