IUBB vs Michigan St - Sunday, 03.10.24 @ 4:30 on CBS

Probably the last real positive for the season. Hopefully Gallo can play next week. What I do think though, is that I didn’t see a bunch of guys who looked like they have checked out. Even the guys on the bench were into the game.

Gillespie was a drunk. Sure you didn’t mean Guthrie?

Some similarities. Some big differences… Doherty was hired, in large part because he had the endorsement of Michael Jordan. Similar to Woodson and QB. Doherty brought in some very high end talent, Sean May, Raymond Felton, Rashad McCants. Similar to the talent Woodson brought to IU. Doherty’s second season was 8-20. He also had players leaving mid season. He had an on court screaming match with a Duke assistant coach and called Duke’s cheerleaders ugly. Upon resigning, the AD cited that as much as not winning, the lack of quality character was as much of an issue. As I said, similarities, but not exactly the same story

Understood. The way the question was posted was, what schools with a large number of transfers were “killing it.” Didn’t specify any other criteria. Didn’t say which programs turned around, for instance. As it stands now, no one knows who is coming back and who is leaving. Other than X and Walker, the rest is conjecture. I think Ware is gone. Other than that, until they announce, there’s a chance we only need to plug 2-3 holes. If that happens, to me that’s manageable. If the announcement that Woodson is back was a smoke screen, I would think that either May or Pearl would bring guys where plugging holes wasn’t even a concern

Just looking at this week’s AP Top 25. Kansas and UNC had 5 transfers in and Alabama 4.

I’ll play along. Not defending Woodson or his system. Trying to find a way for us to return to prominence. I don’t know where you got that I am defending him. I have said several times that there needs to be a change. That said. They beat us twice this year. We had beaten them 3 in a row. And more importantly, they have wasted whatever relevance they have gained by being an early out in the tournament. Hell, we went farther than they did last year. Arrogance aside, I would never rather have Purdue gear in my closet.

Do you really want to be Purdue? That Helms banner does annoy me every time I see it and how they push it in my face

I am not advocating that Woodson is the guy to coach next year. I am not sure that many people would be willing to accept “a down year or two.” I am suggesting that using the portal to immediately make improvements would be more palatable to the majority of IU fans. Get someone here who can coach guys up immediately and use the portal to build a competitive team now. Use that tactic while the recruiting of high school guys gets established. Experience enough success in the short term to keep the pressure off until the proper way to build the program is established

I wouldn’t expect it. I want whoever is the IU coach to get the program back as soon as possible. I want them to use every legal tactic allowed to get this done. I don’t care if it’s a team of one year rentals or 4 year developmental guys. My argument here isn’t that Woodson is going to be the answer. My argument is that traditional recruiting a kid and watching him develop over 4-5 years is a thing of the past. Use the portal and NIL to bring in the best team possible next year. If there are current players who decide to stay, that’s the base. Go from there and let it rip

Agree, in the long term that’s how to build the program back up. it’s been acknowledged here that we aren’t anywhere close to the Duke, Kentucky, Kansa, etc of the world. I agree. It’s been a common theme that the IU fan base is growing more and more impatient to return to relevance .That 20 plus years is not acceptable for IU. I agree. So, how are we going to achieve this quick turnaround that everyone wants? It’s been mentioned here that if May came and brought his FAU guys with him, that would be an immediate upgrade. Probably would, but how different would that be from getting guys from the portal? They would have no real connection to IU. If Pearl came and brought several of his recruits with him, would they be IU guys or Pearl guy? As I said, I want to see IU back to prominence just like you do. Soon as possible. I am not talking about the weakness of Woodson’s recruiting system. I’m talking about what it’s going to take to get the program back to being competitive as soon as possible and getting the fans back and connected to the program

I’m confused. And not defending Woodson. it’s been an ongoing criticism that we aren’t keeping up with modern day ball. Using the portal to its maximum benefit is akin to Moneyball… modern day team management. Why would that be a bad thing if it brought the results everyone wants?

Understood. Smith played with much better talent. I don’t think Cupps will be as good as Smith. My point was that if he took a sophomore jump like Smith has, Gabe could be a valuable asset

Not happy to lose McNeely, but agree that if he’s a one and done guy he should play somewhere he can feel certain he’ll be in the tournament. That being said, Kansas isn’t playing well right now with what has been called the best starting 5 in college basketball
