    Fire Coach Woodson Thread

In the history of IU basketball the only coach that meets your criteria is RMK. Crean had the wins and S16, but finished 5th in conference. Your standards aren’t realistic for the history of the program.

Again, agree to a point. I am not here to say that X is a perfect leader. That he ticks all the boxes we'd like to see ticked. However I don't think the other guys on the floor care much about what happened with the driving issue. Probably not even the flagrant fouls other than they put the team farther behind in the specific games they occurred in. I think they do care that he is more skilled than Cupps, more physically mature than Cupps. Can get to the rim on his own. I think that a certain part of the fanbase has put much more emphasis on the character issues X has displayed than his teammates do.

Main ball handler is supposed to be the guy that gets his teammates in the proper position, directing traffic so to speak. That is a form of leadership.

Agree....to a point. When you have to replace the main ball handler with an overmatched freshman, leader or not there is going to be growing pains.

Depends on how it's positioned to him....Do you want to leave the program you love with a tarnished reputation and no chance to repair it? Or do you want to try to be part of returning the program to where it should be? I don't believe his ego is such that he doesn't realize that this has not worked out for him.

Don't know where it was mentioned, but there is a solution that would allow Buckner/Woodson to save face, and possibly save the Athletic Dept. the buyout of multiple contracts. If the year continues in a downward spiral, and there is a known winning coach ready to take over, move Woodson into a consulting roll, similar to what Matta was in when first hired. Woodson does have great contacts with the NBA, and that has been a large part of his strength while at IU. He has been able to sell to recruits his knowledge of what it takes to get to, and succeed at the highest level. Keeping him around would continue the relationship he has developed with Montverde. He can still tell the story. But he would be out of the loop on any on-court decisions, and not in front of the media making statements like he has. To me, this would make a lot of sense, save some money, and allow all to save face.

Hey, I’m the new guy here and just trying to get the lay of the land. I hear that certain people are more connected than others and trying to discern what is valid information and what is opinion. I am not trying to make enemies. Just trying to understand how this board works

You obviously don’t read or follow the conversation. You asked whether the “holier than thou “ IU administration would stoop to hire someone like Pitino. I provided a point of reference that they had done so in the past with Sampson. Not really hard to follow.. Please provide your inside information to verify your claim about how this went down

So, you think that they didn’t know about guys not going to class? Or the rampant drug problem ? If you think there aren’t staff monitoring this stuff, I don’t know what to tell you.

They hired and put up with Sampson while he let the inmates run the asylum. So, yes.

The very first paragraph says that they expressed no interest in the job. That wouldn’t have happened out of the blue unless inquiries were made. My point being, this was more than a”wink wink, you’re hired Woody” process.

Per an article by Bozich after the Miller firing, Steven’s, Rick Pitino and Nate Oates all turned down the job. They then interviewed Woodson and reached out to Matta, who could not pass the physical they requested. Sure sounds like a search to me.

Did you read my post? I said “I don’t know if he’s going to keep his job or not.” Does that sound like I’m defending him? My objection is the incessant, and imo over the top bashing of him, or any coach for that matter.. Someone said that I am just looking for ways to defend him.. which I am not. But when it’s insinuated that players are going out to the bars after the games and they are just following Woodson’s example because he was pictured having a glass of wine. That’s not reaching for it? This thread has gone on for 250 pages of people basically saying the same things, and attaboying each other. Open it up hoping that there is something new to learn. Instead it’s the same guys saying the same stuff. The hump jokes were old on page 2.

The difference being that Woodson was hired after there was an open search for a new coach

they work at a state university, they are. Despite what people like to believe when they talk about coaches’ salaries, though, they are only paid by the state whatever it is that someone of their educational level and tenure would make on the state’s salary schedule plus a stipend for time spent coaching football; this totals usually to less than $100K a year (often much less). Most of their salaries come from boosters, athletic department funds, shoe and equipment contracts, coaches’ TV and radio shows, and product endorsements A response to the question “Are coaches state employees.” Maybe you should know what you’re talking about before you laugh your @$$ right off… And this has nothing to do with Woodson. It has to do with hiring Pearl with an agreement that his son would be the next head coach
  23. steubenhoosier

    Fire Coach Woodson Thread

Sure it would. It’s a public institution funded by tax dollars. Pretty sure there is a hiring process for state employees

So would promising the son of a head coach that he would take over when dad retires. Would potentially open the university and its treasure chest to all kinds of nepotism and discrimination lawsuits.

    General Coach Candidate News

IIRC, Crean was run out of Bloomington because his teams could only play one way. He had little capability to adjust to what his opponents were doing. Syracuse game was prime example. I don’t watch much SEC basketball but it sounds like Oates’ teams are similar.
