Transfer Portal w IU Interest
AH1971 replied to Class of '66 Old Fart's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
IU is still looking at proven 3 point shooters in Humrichous and Hickman. But even as respectable shooters, neither of them have the overall games as Rice.... and Carlyle looked pretty good despite having to sit out the first month and a half of the season. The upside of Rice and Carlyle are extrememly high, and Rice was a pretty damn good proven player as a first year guy. -
It's virtually non-existent. A huge reason why their football program has fallen off a cliff these last 3-4 years.
-
Carlyle struggled with grades early on and actually missed the first part of the season because of it, so could be a reason why he is trying to get out, and Myles Rice was severely overlooked coming out of high school who has positioned himself to play at a bigger and better program where he can make some money.

You're operating under the impression that Carlyle and Rice are "bad" shooters instead of operating under the idea that both were freshman last year. Not many freshman come in and shoot 40% from 3. Hell not many come in shooting 35% from 3. If you watch any film on either of them, even for a little bit, the mechanics, the release, point, and the overall form looks solid, especially from Rice who was shooting at a more than respectable clip until a late season slump. Assuming Ballo and Reneau are our two primary interior players next year, I would guess Rice and Carlyle will both average somewhere between 1.5-2 makes per game on 5-6 attempts. To put that into perspective, that's somewhere between 55-70 made 3's per player. I think anyone would welcome that. I think Mgabko is going to be our volume guy however, 2.5-3 makes on 7-8 attempts doesn't seem farfetched. That's going to be a lot of open looks for teams trying stop two guys who are automatic under the rim. -

That it's awful early to play Chicken Little this early in the process. -

I would wager that both Rice and Carlyle will shoot closer to 35% this year on decent volume than what each shot last year. Couple that with Mgbako who shot extremely well in-conference on volume and I think the shooting concerns are well over blown given that Rice and Carlyle are both extremely dynamic guards who can get their own shot anywhere on the court. In other words, I'm not worried about teams packing the lane like last year daring Cupps/Galloway/Leal/Johnson or whoever else was out on the perimeter to shoot. -

He had an elite 7-8 game stretch his first year and then was terribly inconsistent/unavailable outside that. Can't have that out of your PG. -

So a vast upgrade at PG considering Rice was a first year player and Johnson was playing his 6th year of collegiate ball. Thank you. -

I think about 95% of us were happy with Ware but knew not landing a guard on top of leaving a scholarship open was extremely disheartening. -

Now do Galloway, Xavier Johnson, and Gabe Cupps. -

Yes you did start the whole charade equating Woodson golfing to not doing his job, it's not like we don't have 4 prospects visiting this weekend literally the day after the dead period ends, but I'm pretty sure @Golfman25 is the one who said multiple times that landing 3 top 50 transfers is next to an impossible feat as it has only been done once....or something along those lines. As far as your expectations go, they are yours. I won't tell you otherwise. My expectation is to always make the tournament and compete for a B10 title. -
They “Retired” Coach Woodson Thread

The portal is here and isn't going anywhere, anytime soon. It is absolutely an added element to recruiting. I'm not sure overhauling your roster year after year relying on 7-8 players can be sustained in the long haul, but I believe being able to secure 2-3 college ready players an offseason is a better strategy than relying on freshman. Essentially, I don't think 4-6 man recruiting classes are the way to go anymore. I'd like IU to recruit at least 1-2 four year players a cycle and shoot for a top 25 prospect or 2, but you can absolutely be successful recruiting 2-3 portal guys who can immediately plug and play. -

Of course. But the reactions to Woodson playing golf at coaching convention were comical. I'm going to let that die here though, not the place as it has been requested. -

Rice has 3 as does Carlyle. I believe this would be Ballo's Covid year. -

I was told by a certain poster, maybe @Golfman25 that it was next to impossible to land 3 top 50 players from the portal (as it had only been done once) and that "Mediocre Mike" had no chance "BEcaUsE hE waS goLfInG" (during the dead period). Seems like there's a 95% chance we get at least two top 15 guards (Rice #14 and Carlyle #10) and we seem to be in a good spot to land the overall #1 player in Ballo. Who would have thought that a coach playing golf at 8am on a Sunday morning the night after the F4 could flip the script so fast? -

I think Drew was the first coach they made a formal offer, but Oats was the first coach they actually reached out too. He put out a lengthy sentiment saying he was staying put at Alabama shortly after the UK job opened. -

Come on guys we're all on the same team, let's not do this here. And it's Friday. Should have good news here in the next 24-72 hours I would imagine. -

I think you're vastly underestimating Rice and Carlyle's ability. They might not be deadeye 3 point shooters (and that's ok) but they are both three level scorers who can shot create for themselves. I will ASSURE you that teams will not be sagging off Rice and Carlyle they way they did Cupps/XJ/Galloway last year, 3pt % as first year players be damned. Tristen Newton (32%) and Stephon Castle (26%) weren't 3 point shooters and teams didn't sag off either of them. They scored and got to the rim when they wanted. -

Oats was the first coach they targeted. They did not go after Beard. -

In the last 3 years, 5 of the top 7 programs of all-time in this sport by my estimation have been open. 1. North Carolina—-hired Hubert Davis, no college HC experience 2. Duke—-hired Jon Scheyer, no college head coaching experience 3. Kentucky——hired Mark Pope, coached at Utah Valley and BYU, zero tournament wins 4. Indiana——hired Mike Woodson, no college head coaching experience 5. Louisville x2——Kenny Payne no college head coaching experience and Pat Kelsey, coached at Winthrop and College of Charleston, zero tournament wins Throw in Arizona whom I consider a top 10 program that hired Tommy Lloyd (no head coaching experience) as well as Syracuse hiring Adrian Autry (no head coaching experience). Ponder that, it’s a crapshoot. -

Very well could have been. I just don’t think raw % always tells the story. MM was absolutely dreadful shooting the first 3-4 weeks of the season, like sub 20%. He finished at 32% which again is respectable for a freshman. But he shot 38% for the B10 season on volume (5 attempts/game) which is elite for a freshman, yet somebody somewhere will see 32% and conclude MM isn’t a good 3 point shooter. -

This sparked my interest. He basically went 7 straight games without a 3 pt make, 0-22, from mid-February through the PAC 12 tournament. In the other 28 games he shot a modest 33% which is respectable for a first year player. He had 10 games in which he hit multiple 3p’s and had single games where he went; 6-8, 4-7, and 5-10 respectively. For comparison, only Mgbako had more multi-made 3P games than Rice (16). His stroke looks fine and not someone I would consider a 3pt liability down the road. -

That is a good point but I think you can extrapolate a little better scoring output as well. Washington St was 322nd in tempo last year. 15 ppg in that system for a freshman says a lot. -

NGW/Tyme alluding that Rice's visit is just smoke. Any confirmation on your end when he might land on campus?
