They “Retired” Coach Woodson Thread
AH1971 replied to Banksyrules's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
Sorry thought you were talking about last year. Point still remains as a large carry over from this years team played on the 2022 team. Galloway, Johnson, and Kopp etc aren't dynamic shooters. They're catch and shoot, their efficiency goes down the drain off the move or off the bounce. They can't create their own shot. -

More makes on larger volume=more points per possession. Turnovers and tempo also factor into efficiency. -

Again, 38% on low volume lol. Galloway, Cupps, Xavier Johnson, and Leal are only taking 3 pointers with their feet set and nobody guarding them. That was the core of our back court last season. Mgbako was the one guy on the roster last year who could consistently get off a 3 point shot on the move or off the bounce. It isn't hard to understand that personnel dictates strategy. -

Because Galloway isn't a volume shooter even if he shot it at 70%. He cannot shoot off the bounce. Neither could Miller Kopp. -

I think this is a fair breakdown on attempts: Mgbako: 6.5-7.5 Rice: 4.5-5.5 Carlyle: 5.5-6 That's 16.5-18.5 attempts between 3 players. Between Galloway, Tucker, Reneau, and whatever stretch 4 the staff brings in; they make up the other 3.5-5.5 attempts. Actually wouldn't be surprised if IU ended up shooting more than 22 a game. -

His shots were on lobs and put back dunks/offensive rebounds. He's a 25-27 mpg guy. He's not going to be force fed every time down. That is not nor has ever been his game. -

We didn't bring back Mgbako and pay a boatload to get Carlyle and Rice to run the same offense. Signing Ballo who isn't a high usage big like TJD or Ware further reinforces this notion. -

Not looking to build a strawman, simply what I believe. That's Reneau's path to the NBA. I believe he'll have a significantly larger perimeter role next year as he continues to develop an outside game; see jump from Freshman year to Sophomore year. Not out of the question think a player can't still continue to develop in college on top of expanding their role. -

We just going to ignore Mgbako shooting 38% from 3 on good volume over a 20 game conference slate? I will assure you opposing defense's aren't going to sag off three 35+% volume 3 point shooters. -

My caveat for having a top 15 offense is Rice and Carlyle shooting bare minimum 35% from 3 on volume. That also includes Mgbako duplicating his conference stats from last season. Throw in Ballo and Reneau who are almost automatic at the rim and that's a top 15 KenPom effcieint offense. When you have 3 guys playing the bulk of the minutes shooting 35%+ from 3 on volume you're going to have an efficient offense. Can't explain it any more clearly than that. -

I’ll bet anything Reneau’s production stagnates if not dips with a better back court. He’s going to be playing out more on the perimeter anyway so I’m not worried about force him every possession, just more paranoia. Laughable that you’d put guys like Galloway and Xavier Johnson in the same sentence as Rice and Carlyle. Those guys were better as freshman than X and Galloway were as upperclassmen. There’s nothing wrong with Woodson’s system with the right personnel. We finally have guards (multiple) who can win one on one matchups and score off the bounce. JHS the only guard under Woodson who was capable of winning his matchup consistently and he was pretty damn good. -

What playmakers, shooters, etc were running the offense last year that you speak of? What guard could even create his own shot? Ballo is not a post-dominant big who you force feed every time down, clearly you’ve never seen him play. -
Expectations for the 24-25 Season
AH1971 replied to Unexpectedflash's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
The back court talent last season was arguably the worst it’s been since the 60’s. IU had three 5* who were all underclassmen and the two that played the year prior were rotational players. -

Anthony Walker played 14 mpg and took 116 shots last season. I’d tell Anderson those are your minutes and shots, they better all be 3’s and you better make 50 of them because you’re going to be wide open. -

3’s are worth more than 2’s….especially on a higher volume…..DERRRRR. You ever stop and think that KenPom efficiency numbers were so low due to the fact that IU was a low make, low volume 3 point shooting team? I mean JC this isn’t that hard, when your 5 core backcourt players make 77 combined 3’s in a 30+ game season at a 32% clip, your efficiency numbers are going to suck. -

Yeah I don’t care how many ppg we score so long as it’s more than the other team. -

Where the hell are you getting 215th ranked offense? They were 105th in KenPom efficiency. Carlyle and Rice shooting 35% on 5-6 3 point attempts along with Mgbako shooting his same % on a slightly higher volume than he did in the B10 last season is easily a top 15 KenPom offense next year once you factor in Ballo and Reneau’s efficiency at the rim. -

The 400 additional shots isn’t a hard number to overcome, gone are: Ware’s 11 shots Galloway’s 9 shots will significantly decrease with a new role. 9 to 5/6 seems appropriate Gone are Xavier Johnson’s 6 shots Gone are CJ Gunn’s 4 shots Cupps dips from 4 to 2. That’s 28 additional shots a game that just became available. Ballo 7-8 shots, Carlyle and Rice 10 shots, with 5 to 6 being from the perimeter. That’s not including a spike from Mgbako + Tucker and whatever 4/5 the staff brings in on -

400 extra possessions equates to roughly 11 more possessions a game over the course of a 35 game season. Playing at a slightly faster tempo with dynamic guards + Ballo’s offensive rebounding potency doesn’t make this nearly as far fetched as you want to make it out to be. And that’s using the absolute high end scenario I ascribed. -

Also you understand that between Galloway, Cupps, Johnson, Leal, and Gunn, the 5 of them combined went 77/238 for 32% last year. You get that correct? Asking how the offense will improve with two guys shooting 35% from 3 on volume before even taking into consideration production from Mgbako, Reneau, and Ballo is legit asinine. -

Carlyle and Rice not going to make a shot inside the arc or at the free throw line next year lol?
