Woodson and the HT on his new roster
AH1971 replied to HoosierHoopster's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
Purdue went to the national title game starting two 5's. The difference? Purdue's 1-3: 199-496 40% from 3 IU's 1-3: 90-292 31% from 3 And Purdue fed the post EVERY.DAMN.TIME down the floor. This idea that two "big" men, aka non-40% 3pt shooters, can't co-exist on the floor together is the single worst argument on this forum. Just so mind-numbingly dumb any and every time I hear somebody say it. -

Ballo and Galloway need to become much better FT shooters to be on the floor end of game crunch time. -

And the NYK demoted Glen Grunwald and hired Steve Mills and Phil Jackson who cleaned house and the franchise went into the absolute can for the remainder of the decade. Absolute dumbest thing the Knicks did was fire Woodson in favor of Derek Fischer who was familiar with Jackson’s Triangle offense. They won 17 games the year after they fired Woody and never recovered under that regime. Didn’t once sniff the playoffs despite chronically going over the luxury tax. Nitpicking a coach for finishing in the top third of the entire league in 3 pointers made and attempted is laugh out loud funny. -
Gottlieb was very good at OK State on some pretty darn good teams. Didn't need to score because he was always setting up his teammates. Lead the nation in assists in both his junior and senior seasons and finished his career as the B12's all-time assist leader and on top of being 7th all-time nationally. One of the better pure point pure guards to play at the collegiate level. Have no clue how that will translate to being a successful coach, but he was very successful as a player.

Woodson and the HT on his new roster

His team in New York won 54 games (the most wins from that franchise since the 96-97 season) and lead the league in both 3 pointers made and 3 pointers attempted. -
I'd add Charlie Miller and Troy Williams. Charlie Miller more so than Troy Williams, but both examples of high level athletes who could never really translate that to production on the court sans Williams junior year.

Woodson and the HT on his new roster

The guy very clearly didn’t read the article which was entirely about roster construction. Woodson’s comments when put into context clearly suggest he isn’t married to the idea of playing two bigs because of the other pieces he added in the portal. -

I don't know what the hell that means or what that has to do with what you said earlier? Delusional if you think Ware and Reneau are the reason why IU was bad last year. -

Or it alludes to the fact that IU actually now has depth and versatility to play a combination of lineups if one in particular isn't working. Reneau and Ware were by far and away the two best players from start to finish last year, hence the reason they both played 30 mpg together last season. But you knew that. -

Did anyone seriously think one of Ballo or Reneau wouldn't start? -

He has a top 10-15 roster next year, who cares how old he is? And he’s not 68 either. So theoretically, had IU hired any other coach who was younger than say 50, these last 3 years are now somehow now respectable? But they aren’t because of the coach’s age? It’s ok for a younger coach to lose? Most mind-numbingly dumb thing I’ve ever heard. Narratives…..I get it. -

*upset (twice) with a plethora of NBA talent. Context remember, don’t leave it out. And JFC, nobody is comparing Woodson to Hurley. I’m comparing the standard to which this board has held Woodson through 3 seasons to the standard UConn held Hurley through 4 years….which was much worse. It’s a direct response to a poster who said a real basketball program wouldn’t have tolerated Woodson’s first 3 seasons. -

He had 4 future NBA players the year they were upset by Maryland in the first round including lottery pick James Bouknight and then another 4 future NBA players the following year when they lost as a 5 seed to New Mexico St, three of them who remained for the following seasons title team. So glad you could clear up that context. -

People were calling for Archie's head after year 2. He lost 12/13 games with a top 5 recruit and an All B10 player in Juwan Morgan. -

So by that logic, a big boy program like UConn would have fired Danny Hurley for not winning a single tournament game in 4 years? Thank you for making my point. -

And he immediately took a program who hadn't played in an NCAAT game since 2016 back to the dance in consecutive years. Judging your age, you can count on one hand the number of times IU has played in consecutive tournaments in your lifetime. I'm not sure what kind of immediate success you were looking for? -

Who said he was? But Danny Hurley would have been unemployed if we let people like you make executive decisions. -

I'm not comparing Mike Woodson to Dan Hurley. I was commenting on the ridiculous assertion that if your head coach doesn't achieve pinnacle results in his first 3 seasons he must be shown the door or otherwise be relegated to a program who doesn't care. I'm just playing your guys game. -

This board would have fired Dan Hurley based on his first 4 seasons, no? 2 Missed tournaments, an outright losing record, and two first round losses as a better seed? Tell me where I'm wrong? -

Dan Hurley in his first 4 years at UConn: 16-17 no tournament 19-12 tournament cancelled (squarely on the bubble but most likely on the outside looking in) 15-8 #7 seed lost to #10 Maryland 63-54 in the first round 23-10 #5 seed lost to #12 seed New Mexico State 70-63 in the first round Imagine if their administration acted like one of the "big boys"?
