What is this lol? Certain candidates with a 0% chance of coaching IU can be discussed ad nauseum but others who push a candidate with the same odds get ostracized? How the hell does that work? Remember, it's a free message board

Mark Turgeon - A Coaching Candidate? Or Not
AH1971 replied to #1fanofafrin's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
Can you start a separate thread for Brad Stevens while you're at it, seeing as both Brad and Turg have the same chance of coaching IU next year? Please and thanks. -
By no means a ringing endorsement for Turgeon, but his average B10 finish is 4th and his best team had their tournament cancelled due to COVID in a year they won the B10. I don't think he'd be a great fit at IU, but I also didn't think he would be at Maryland either and he did alright for himself.

Why do people act this way? This list has 1. One of the frontrunners for NCOY (May) 2. A guy whose had Iowa State a top 5 team in the country back to back years (Otzelberger) 3. A coach who has made the tournament 15/16 years and has a .700 winning % in a P5 conference (Cronin) 4. A longshot that has won multiple NCAAT (Donovan) 5. An experienced but average coach in Chris Holtmann If those are indeed the 5 candidates, Dolson will have done an excellent job. Who do you expect IU to hire lol?
-
For having a realistic perspective? Otzelberger would be a home run and Drew would be a very solid hire. I wouldn't be thrilled with Brownell but would be interesting if given the right resources and support, his honey-moon would last about 2 weeks however. McCollum/Byington are a flip of the coin. Who do you think IU is hiring?
-
Of course he would, he's on TV right now. That's my point. This job isn't (as) appealing to well-established coaches currently in a good and supporting environment. There's zero reason for somebody like Nate Oats or Bruce Pearl or even Dusty May to leave their current jobs for IU even though IU has more history. I'm telling you not to act surprised when IU hires either an up and comer from the lower ranks or a "mediocre P5 coach".
-
I know all of that already. That optics of running off a coach who has made the tournament 3/4 years isn't appealing to a well-established coach currently in a good situation. This is a huge reason why Dusty May wasn't interested in the IU job.
-
Still can't admit you're wrong that IU doesn't fire and remove coaches mid-season for poor performance? Sad
-
We can discuss further once a coach has been named.
-
Trust me, Brownell isn't anywhere near my list, but just get the general feeling that he's not nearly as far-fetched of a candidate as people want to believe. If you're like me and understood this entire time that guys like Stevens, Pearl, Oats, etc weren't entertaining the IU job, let alone coming, Brad Brownell as a potential candidate makes some sense on the surface. I said back on Feb 3rd that if I was the IU AD I would give out 3 offers: Will Wade, Mick Cronin, and TJ Otzelberger and you wouldn't have to worry about hiring another coach for another 15-20 years.
-
Or....and hear me out Running off a coach, and alum at that, who has taken his team to the tournament 3 times in 4 seasons relegates the candidate list to "mediocre P5 coaches" and hungry up and comers.
-
These "self-important" people crap on you if you go against any kind of groupthink.
-
I will root like hell for either to succeed and admit that I'm wrong? You going to pump the Stevens narrative for a...checks notes...3rd time somewhere circa 2030 when we're doing this over again?
-
I'm not privy to any of their coaching searches so can't say. Brownell however has a better resume than just about all of them.
-
LOL Jeff Goodman, who has more sources than this entire board combined, has said Brad Stevens is NOT a candidate for the Indiana job. I'm going to believe him who has nothing to gain either way over a few self-important people who have been dead wrong about Brad Stevens on multiple occasions. Dusty May just signed an extension to remain with Michigan. Open your eyes man, neither of them are coaching here.
-
I mean UNC---promoted Hubert Davis (no prior HC experience) UConn---hired Dan Hurley Wagner/Rhode Island UCLA----hired Mick Cronin Cincinnati (after whiffing on 10-15 other candidates) Syracuse---promoted Red Autry (no prior HC experience) Louisville--hired Pat Kelsey Winthrop/College of Charleston Arizona---hired Tommy Lloyd (no prior HC experience) Illinois---hired Brad Underwood Stephen F Austin/Oklahoma State Why wouldn't Brad Brownell be considered?
-
Isn't that what we've all being doing for the last 800 pages lol?
-
Would guess Dolson and the administration consider Brownell a much more practical candidate than most on here. They are the ones that actually have a finger on the pulse of the situation. Those guys have to deal in reality, not fantasy land like these thread has become for the last month.
-
Reached out too or been turned down? May and Stevens aren't coming to IU. Neither is Pearl, neither is Oats, neither are a bunch of these other names being floated. And if we aren't going to go after Cronin and refuse to talk to guys like Wade/Beard, this is what your candidate list most likely appears as of today Tier A Drew/Otzelberger (don't see him leaving Ames) Tier B Brad Brownell Tier C McCollum/Byington You're vastly overestimating the IU job and how it pertains to certain candidates.
-
Think the plan all along was to hire a DePauw grad named Brad :) In all honesty though, I do think Brownell is a much more realistic candidate than many want to believe. In fact, if Dolson can't convince Scott Drew to leave Baylor I bet he's plan B.
-
He left for the NFL, completely different. Auburn to Indiana today is a lateral move at best. His son getting the head coaching job is more than likely contingent on Pearl retiring at Auburn in a few years. Don't think there's anyway he screws that up for his son.
-
I have not seen one person opposed to Brad Stevens, just people who understand Brad Stevens isn’t going to return after a decade absence, snap his fingers, and magically have IU as a national title contender in a year or two. That and it’s completely pointless to speculate because he has zero interest in this job. There’s nearly 1000 pages worth of speculation on a candidate that has a better chance of retiring and moving to the moon tomorrow than he does coaching Indiana. It’s so freaking silly that Brad Stevens continues to dominate the general candidate thread.
-
There’s still a better chance of hiring somebody who wants to coach college basketball vs somebody who has zero interest.
-
How is Pearl less realistic than Stevens, who has turned the job down now at least twice? Pearl is a sitting head coach at the collegiate level and a college basketball lifer. Stevens is the sitting President of the Celtics who hasn’t coached collegiately in over a decade.
-
I’m one of them. If we want to dream about somebody who isn’t coming, dream about Bruce Pearl or Nate Oats. Those two clear Stevens today easily.
