Woodson and the HT on his new roster
AH1971 replied to HoosierHoopster's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
The roster construction totally falls on Woodson, have never steered from that. But you still have to play your best guys. I don't see any three guard lineup from any of the last few years that would have warranted taking Race Thompson or Malik Reneau out of the lineup. -

He’s never had a collection of 3 guards worth playing together over the alternative in any of the 3 seasons he’s been here. Thought that was obvious? -

Yes and those double and triple teams came because you had guys like Galloway, Cupps, Gunn, etc sitting out on the perimeter who weren't a threat to shoot...like at all. If IU beat you by making 10+ 3 pointers you simply tipped your cap. -

He doesn’t need a personal defender. Just silly to suggest that Mike Woodson needed to run more sets to free up poor shooters such as Galloway and Cupps. I’d maybe see your point if Galloway shot a lot better than 26% from 3 last year, but more shots for Cupps and Galloway and less for Reneau and Ware would have lead to an even worse season. -

Mgbako attempted 5 three pointers a game during the B10 season. Half of his shots were from the perimeter. That's the very definition of volume. It's guys like Cupps and Galloway who started 75% of the conference season who were low volume. They weren't low volume because we didn't run action for them, they were low volume because they either a) couldn't shoot (Galloway) or b) afraid to shoot (Cupps). There's your proof. -
I would say at this point he's probably already enrolled at UConn and if your head coach leaves you have 30 days to enter your name in the portal without penalty. Similar situation happened when Saban left Alabama. Incoming freshman Julian Sayer enrolled at the spring semester and he was able to put his name in the portal and transferred to Ohio State.

It's a chicken and the egg situation. We didn't shoot a lot of volume out on the perimeter because IU didn't have good enough perimeter shooting to begin with. 10 more 3 point attempts last year is 10 less shots between Reneau and Ware. Would have been a disaster. Ballo is not a high volume post player. Rice, Carlyle, Mgbako, Goode are much higher volume guys than any lineup combination we could have used last year and will reciprocate as such regardless if IU plays two bigs or not. -

What do you mean? The back court last year was Trey Galloway, Gabe Cupps, Anthony Leal, CJ Gunn, and Xavier Johnson for half a season. The fact that anyone seriously believes that Woodson should have played MORE 3 guard sets is truly astounding. He’s going to play more 3 guard lineups this year because he has: A) quality guards, as in multiple B) actual back court depth This isn’t hard people. Coaches run stuff tailored to their strength and personnel. You don’t put an option QB in shotgun and have him throw 50 times a game downfield. Trey Galloway would have started for a handful of B10 teams last year as a 4th of 5th option but I’m not sure Leal, Cupps, Gunn, etc crack the rotation at any other B10 school last year. -

Tell that to Purdue, Houston, Tennessee, Iowa St, and NC State. -

Why isn't it ideal? Half the teams that finished in the top 10 of the Final AP poll played either two "true" bigs or a 4 man who was either low volume and/or inefficient from 3 which makes your take in fact, illogical. It's just a stupid narrative for people to use as to why they think Mike Woodson can't coach. Our guards collectively sucked last year, nothing more, nothing less. There's more than one way to win a basketball game. IU wasn't bad because Reneau and Ware played together.....and would have only been that much worse had Woodson staggered their minutes for the sake of playing "modern basketball". -

You act like IU, and evidently Purdue, were the only two teams in the country who played two bigs last year. I want to know what fantasy land you are living in? Surround Reneau and Ware last year with competent guards who can dribble and shoot off the bounce and we're a top 25 tournament team the entire year. Yes, suggesting that playing Ballo and Reneau is a recipe for a ton of losses to top 25 teams considering our major upgrades at the guard position is totally without reason. -

Purdue went to the national title game starting two 5's. The difference? Purdue's 1-3: 199-496 40% from 3 IU's 1-3: 90-292 31% from 3 And Purdue fed the post EVERY.DAMN.TIME down the floor. This idea that two "big" men, aka non-40% 3pt shooters, can't co-exist on the floor together is the single worst argument on this forum. Just so mind-numbingly dumb any and every time I hear somebody say it. -

Ballo and Galloway need to become much better FT shooters to be on the floor end of game crunch time. -

And the NYK demoted Glen Grunwald and hired Steve Mills and Phil Jackson who cleaned house and the franchise went into the absolute can for the remainder of the decade. Absolute dumbest thing the Knicks did was fire Woodson in favor of Derek Fischer who was familiar with Jackson’s Triangle offense. They won 17 games the year after they fired Woody and never recovered under that regime. Didn’t once sniff the playoffs despite chronically going over the luxury tax. Nitpicking a coach for finishing in the top third of the entire league in 3 pointers made and attempted is laugh out loud funny. -
Gottlieb was very good at OK State on some pretty darn good teams. Didn't need to score because he was always setting up his teammates. Lead the nation in assists in both his junior and senior seasons and finished his career as the B12's all-time assist leader and on top of being 7th all-time nationally. One of the better pure point pure guards to play at the collegiate level. Have no clue how that will translate to being a successful coach, but he was very successful as a player.

His team in New York won 54 games (the most wins from that franchise since the 96-97 season) and lead the league in both 3 pointers made and 3 pointers attempted. -
I'd add Charlie Miller and Troy Williams. Charlie Miller more so than Troy Williams, but both examples of high level athletes who could never really translate that to production on the court sans Williams junior year.

The guy very clearly didn’t read the article which was entirely about roster construction. Woodson’s comments when put into context clearly suggest he isn’t married to the idea of playing two bigs because of the other pieces he added in the portal. -

I don't know what the hell that means or what that has to do with what you said earlier? Delusional if you think Ware and Reneau are the reason why IU was bad last year. -

Or it alludes to the fact that IU actually now has depth and versatility to play a combination of lineups if one in particular isn't working. Reneau and Ware were by far and away the two best players from start to finish last year, hence the reason they both played 30 mpg together last season. But you knew that. -
