They “Retired” Coach Woodson Thread
Tasmanian Devil replied to Banksyrules's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
Don’t you think you’re being a little disingenuous, Scott? Your 1st year listed - 2016-17 for Texas Tech, Beard’s first season in Lubbock. Building year, so understandable no NCAA. Your 2nd & 3rd years listed - 2017-18 / 2018-19 for TT. Elite 8 and National Runner Up. Clearly, Beard has them rolling. Your 4th year listed - 2019-20, you have No Tournament, as if they failed to make the dance. NO ONE made the dance; it was canceled! (As an aside, every bracketology prediction I checked had TT in the Tournament) Your 5th year listed - 2020-21, lost in 2nd round. Down year, agree a string of those are unacceptable. Was a weird tournament for everyone with limited fans. Your 6th year listed - 2021-22. That was his FIRST year at Texas. Yet you won’t acknowledge that taking over a new program needs to be viewed separately from your previous school? Your EXACT words were “If we hire a new coach and THIS IS HIS RECORD FOR THE NEXT 7 YEARS” - as if this is a representation of his actual body of work. Your 7th year listed - another change in school. Again, you want to count that as a continual string of performance? And you fail to include the 7-1 start his 2nd year at Texas, which Beard had the Longhorns ranked #2 and rolling - a team that ultimately advanced to the Elite 8. Did you forget about that? What about what he’s done this year at Ole Miss - currently 11-2 and ranked in the top 25? If anything, his results from his coaching career indicates he can build a successful program rather quickly. Listen, Beard is not my first choice. But given IU’s resources and NIL, he’d kill it here. You’re entitled to your opinion, but don’t cherry pick your facts. -

This first conference game will be telling. Rutgers has played some really good basketball at times, and with Harper and Bailey they can get by with raw talent compared to IU at the same positions. Wouldn’t surprise me if we beat Rutgers, but it also wouldn’t surprise me if we lose to them by double digits. And if that happens, the avalanche will begin. -

Was prompted to change my network password. Usually struggle to come up with something to satisfy the length requirements that is easy to type and remember, but the new PW should make for a quick login: “MikeWoodsonSucks” Passwords have to be changed every 90 days, which hopefully means my next login will be “CoachBradStevens”. -

Really? You’re in the middle of a thread titled “Fire Mike Woodson”, ask not to have character assassinations . . . But THIS ^^^^^ has you up in arms? I can only imagine the angst if he’d stolen cookies from your cookie jar . . . Why are you really in this thread? You’re now trying to be the forum police? C’mon - you’re better than this. -

Outscored 30-12, 18 point difference. Lost by 17. If you’re trying to get over a hump, why make it into a mountain? -

Listen, I loved Woodson as a player. He was a legend. And I understand the character assassination you feel is unnecessary. At the same time, Woodson has brought some of this grief upon himself. This goes beyond running an antiquated system that no one else competing at a high level uses. It’s about effort - or lack thereof. And we’re not just referring to the lack of effort in the Louisville and Gonzaga games, or in the last 7 minutes Friday night. How about going to sectionals when your team is not playing - and all your rival coaches are there? How about taking a minute of your day to send a text to a committed player (McNeeley) so to keep building a relationship? How about going to scheduled dinner with a player in town on a recruiting trip but instead blow it off so you can continue smoking cigars and playing cards? Vince Lombardi once said “Winning is not a sometime thing; it's an all time thing. You don't win once in a while, you don't do things right once in a while, you do them right all the time. Winning is habit. Unfortunately, so is losing.” That’s the issue I see with Woodson. His team’s effort is a direct reflection of their coach. As coach of IU, there are a lot of great benefits and privileges, and he’s enjoying the wine, the cigars, and the golf. But the other things - the things that go a long ways toward being successful - he’s content with doing them once in a while. You can’t be once in a while, you can’t be sometimes. If you are, you get what we see in Indiana Basketball. -

On 11/28, you said this: ”Nine straight. That’s my benchmark. Any slip ups and time to move on” Any slip ups and time to move on - and we didn’t just slip up, we completely quit in the last 7 minutes. Ended the game on a 17-1 run by Nebby - the same Husker team that lost to Sparty by 37 the game before. Do you still defend this? Not asking to be snarky or “call you out” but, my God, if Friday doesn’t kill what support you have left, what will? -

Do you think that is a coincidence? Or maybe that occurs because of issues in the way we play that allows them to excel? -

17-1 run by Nebby over the last 6:51 of the game. if this game doesn’t convince you Woodson needs to go, nothing will. -

Pathetic. Luke Goode hit a 3-pointer to cut it to 68-67 with 6:51 remaining. The Huskers went on a 17-1 run to close out the game. IU shot 35 three pointers, hitting 8 (22.9%). Nebraska went 8-14 (57.1%). if you think tonight was bad, just wait until we play the better 3-point shooting teams from the Big 10. Gonna get REALLY ugly. -

I’ll bet right now you give him 6 wide open shots from the arc, he isn’t shooting 18.2% on them. -

Held them to 11? Or they are just simply bad? We have given up - on average - 21 three-point attempts per game to our opponents. The only other game this year we’ve given up less than 20 is Sam Houston St (17). We’ve given up 30+ attempts three times. Nevertheless, I counted at least 6 of the attempts from last night that were wide open shots. Again, the Gophers suck - that was the lowest 3-pt percentage last night (18.2%) an opponent had shot against us since last January against Minnesota (15%). The point is, we can’t keep giving up wide-open looks from beyond the arc or it’s gonna kill us. So far, we haven’t played good enough competition for it to matter. But when we get into the Big 10, it certainly will. We’ll play 10 games against teams shooting 35% or better, and you can’t convince me they will all miss those wide open shots like I saw last night - and have seen so far this year. -

Same crap as Providence - Minnesota is getting wide-open 3s, but they can't shoot (20%). Not sure they could hit the Atlantic Ocean if they were on Daytona Beach. We should be winning this game by 30. But our defense is terrible. Good teams in the league are gonna kill us. -

I won’t openly root for us to lose. But, honestly, I don’t believe that I’ll have to root to see the disappointment we know is coming. There is no way with the talent that is on this roster that we shouldn’t have a good year. But we’ve seen this movie before and it doesn’t have the ending any of us want. Just seeing the play from Atlantis told you everything you need to know about how good of a collegiate coach Mike Woodson is. Even in the win over Providence, you could see it wasn’t a matter of us shutting them down on defense, it was a matter of them missing good wide open shots - especially from three point range. Good teams will exploit the crap out of that, especially in the Big 10. -

That’s fair. As I said in my post, I loved Woody as a player. He achieved a lot during his time on the hardwood. But you can’t look past the lack of effort and direction. Had he played anywhere else he would never be the coach at IU. At this point, it just needs to end. He’s Dead Man Walking. -

This is not meant to call you out, so please don’t take offense. But from your posts you seem to be a supporter of Woodson, so I ask (in all sincerity) - did you see my post yesterday evening? Louisville built a 38 point lead WITHOUT ATTEMPTING A SINGLE FREE THROW! Not one. Just how pathetic an effort does a team have to give over 30 minutes of a game that the opponent can nearly double the score on you and you haven’t contested a shot enough to be called for a foul? In all seriousness - what about Woodson and the body of work he has provided to this point leads you to believe he can right this ship? The problems we saw yesterday and today are the same ones we’ve seen the past 3 years. How in good consciousness can you continue to support this?
