He not a high-level athlete. But he IS an outstanding combination of incredible court awareness and savvy along with being a pretty decent athlete. Cupps was invited to the SLAM Summer Classic at historic Rucker Park in NYC last summer, and competed in the slam dunk competition. He’s no slouch athlete.

We hired Woodson after making a run at Stevens. Clearly he’s not a 20 year guy, nor is he about to go into retirement. He could coach another 6-7 easily, so any talk about his age being used against IU is bs. Now talk about his college experience, yeah, that’s legit. But if he can continue developing guys as he did with TJD and JHS, that nonsense will never be an issue.

I’ve said this in other posts , but it’s worth repeating here: This program - for almost 20 - had been badly mismanaged. It will take time. Look at who won last night. They hired their coach (Hurley) in 2018. They didn’t recruit highly ranked players (Clingan was highest rated at 37 in RSCI rankings) but they recruited athletic kids that they DEVELOPED. Kids that fit what they wanted in what they need for their style of play. Look at IU. We’ve got a pair of guards coming in (Newton and Cupps) that have a combination of athleticism and pure basketball ability. We have a post (Reneau) who showed promise; we’ve added post depth with Sparks. And we have two athletic wings in Banks and Gunn - long, lanky guys. If X gets his waiver and we add a guy like Shedrick, we’re looking at the beginning of possibly a good team with a solid summer of development. Within two years we could be solid enough to make a run. After 20 of watching IU spin its wheels, it’s frustrating as hell to watch them have to build. We just need Woodson to get us back to having a team good enough, with the right elements, to be able to make a run when opportunities present themselves as they did for UConn. .

Up until Woody, look how the program has been ran the last 20 years. We’ve had some truly inept people in IU Administration/BOT over that period of time.

With Cupps and Newton I wouldn’t classify 23 as a bust. Sure, missed on a number of targets, but could have been worse.

As much as we’d want impact players, gotta be a good fit. Guys that accomplish their individual goals thru team success.

From 1960 to 1979, Duke was ranked 132 times in the AP Poll. Others like UK, UNC or UCLA might be close to those numbers during that span, but Duke had been a quality program way before Coach K came along.

IMHO (by that criteria) you can’t include UCLA. Wooden took over in 1948 and didn’t go to his 1st Final Four until two years after Duke. Yeah, they won a number of championships - primarily after Sam Gilbert became involved with the program. The others I completely understand your thinking.

Everyone has opinions. For me, Duke has to be included in discussions of who is a Blue Blood. Besides their 5 titles, they’ve been runners up 6 times and in the Final Four 17 times. They’ve had sustained success over decades. And they have a great fanbase. Kids sleeping in tents to get best seats to games. Love em or Hate em, if we’re being honest we have to include them in any lists of Blue Bloods.

My point wasn’t in trying to dog on Yogi. He was an incredible talent for his size who, had he had a different head coach/culture around him, would have matured much sooner. Gabe doesn’t have nearly the same physical tools Ferrell has. But his approach at the same age is so much different than Yogi’s was. Which is why I believe he is going to have a great freshman season.

Believe what you want. As a freshman, Yogi had the core group of Hulls, Vic, Zeller et all that kept everyone together and focused on basketball. As a sophomore, Yogi was the leader - of having a good time. How does a team that has multiple 5*/4* players, McDonalds AA not even make the tournament? Does a FOCUSED leader allow an atmosphere that is devoid of accountability? You think Luke Fischer left after a semester because he was “homesick”? How is Hanner Perea getting arrested for DUI at 3am just hours after a game, right before the Purdue game? And don’t forget Yogi getting arrested trying to get into trying to get into Kilroys. The cop was gonna let him and Stan go until Yogi argued with him. You can never convince me all that happens under FOCUSED leadership. And, granted, a lot of the issue falls on Crean and his refusal to address issues within the program. But Yogi never became a true leader until after the Duke game. And that’s the truth.
