Candidate Thread: Brad Stevens (Boston Celtics)
Its Always Sunny at IU replied to Hovadipo's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
If true we want this thread still going for 6 weeks. Celtics will run him or Ainge (or both) out of town if this season doesn't turn around. I actually don't think Stevens will be the Boston coach in June, but from his press conference I don't think he wants to come back to Indiana. I certainly appreciate the guys giving scoops though. -

The Lakers are the heavy favorite here. He wants to play with LeBron and compete for a championship. -

Agree with this. It's fun. The Holtman thing should disprove any notion that there's a Stevens deal. But I'll be right here tomorrow to watch and see if the 27th is indeed the day. -

It's past the point of concern, this is all we need to know about Dolson's strategy. Just randomly call people and hope someone says yes. And for me confirms the Matta news was accurate. I still think we can find a coach to get us in the tourney each year. That should not be hard at IU. Bring in Fife or Lewis and let's get going. -

You don't go after Matta and Holtman if there is some deal with Stevens. You are more calm than I so congrats. And your thoughts on keeping Miller are probably what should have happened all along. I cannot believe we raised 10 mil to fire Miller with absolutely no plan. But that's what has happened. -

Texas will not go through the embarrassment that Dolson is putting IU through right now. It's a better basketball program without question. -

Probably the Matta the story was true. Dolson is basically a fundraiser/cheerleader and has no experience with hiring coaches. And it's showing. A complete embarrassment. He's certainly not playing 3-D chess like some posters believe. Just hire Fife and get this circus over with already. -

Yea, I'm a part time season ticket holder at UW and chuckle when I read stories from idiots who think IU didn't give Archie enough time. Trust me if Hop has another bottom half of the Pac 12 finish next year he will be gone. Also I chuckle with people who think IU is done forever. UW football has a couple of national titles and had trouble replacing a legend (Don James). Went winless under Ty Willingham then eventually found the right guy and was in the college football playoffs a few years later and have a couple of Rose Bowls. The same people said the same thing about unreasonable crazy football fans at UW. Find the right coach and IU hoops will be back....quickly. -

First those shows say outlandish things because crazy attracts viewers. No rational basketball fan believes that Loyola is a better job than Indiana. Let's say IU is no longer a blue blood like UK, UNC or Kansas. In this era there are probably 30 programs with a legitimate chance to win a title in any given year. IU is without a doubt one of the best 30 programs in the country. Just from being the flagship school in a basketball hotbed makes this an attractive job. Perhaps not attractive enough to get another head coach in a good situation to come here, but's that the case for most basketball programs. -

It's almost impossible to get a coach to leave a place where he's happy and winning unless it's a mid-major guy moving up the ladder. I think Oats would crush it at IU, but he has a good situation at Alabama. And I don't think IU will go after a mid-major guy after getting burned by Archie. Dolson did not have a guy lined up because that rarely happens even at schools that have tradition and rich alumni....see recent coaching hires at other places like Texas football. My guess is a former player and announced today or tomorrow. -

Agree for a different reason. I believe the reports about Matta which means Dolson had no grand plan for some home run hire, he just wanted to get rid of Archie. While I think the IU guys would wait until the first week of practice next fall and still take the job I think Dolson has probably an agreement with someone and didn't want to steal the thunder from the IU women's team yesterday. -

Borrow the money for the buyout. Interest rates are at historic lows. Put up Memorial Union as collateral.....or flat out sell Read Dorm because I hated that place. Make Oats the highest paid coach in college basketball. He would own this state with his energy and style of play. -

For sure, for an established guy we would have to make him one of the richest coaches in the game. You either pay that money now or we are raising millions for another buyout in a few years. But by then the program will be gone forever Nebraska football style so perhaps you don't need to worry about future buyouts. -

I'm having a great time. Haven't looked at actual news since this coaching search started. And today is why I'm here. We have posters at the Bloomington airport and taking pics of SUVs at Cook Hall. Love it. -

Same. Actually Andy Griffith was only 60 when he started playing Matlock on TV. That's right -- the guy everyone is talking about today to invigorate the IU basketball program is older than Matlock. -

Treesh looks like I'm going to spend the day agreeing with everything you say. If money is no object. If we are dealing with rich boosters then we should keep an eye on Nate Oats. Saban already is one of the highest paid coaches in sports. And his assistants make a ton of money. There's only so much Bama is going to pay a basketball coach. So if some rich IU guy wants to write a 12.5 mil Alabama buyout I think Oats would leave and would be a fantastic reboot for the program. He ticks almost every box that Dolson laid out and is only 46. I have no idea if a booster will shell out that much for another massive buyout. -

100 percent accurate. No successful coach is going to leave a good situation to come to IU's rebuild. It almost never happens. Dolson did not line up anyone before firing Archie because that never happens. He had to move on from Miller because there might have been a mass exodus of players. Given that we just got burned by hiring a mid-major guy I cannot see that happening again. So probably we are talking a former player as the next coach. -
What Are You Willing to Live With?
Its Always Sunny at IU replied to Demo's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
I would absolutely hire Rick Pitino if he was interested. I don't care about all the flack we would get from opposing fans. IU would be in the tournament next year and a Final Four contender in year two. We need someone to bring the program off life support because we are about to flatline Nebraska Football style. But that's my willing to live with line to answer the topic question. -

If it's something and Kendrick and Lander know then we are talking Calbert or Brad Brownell. Or they could both just be having some fun with the IUBB fans. -

I'm not big on Beilein given the reason for his dismissal from the NBA. That would be a cloud hanging over our heads every time he tries to recruit someone. You are naive to the world we live in if you don't realize that. -

"Proven Success" is no guarantee of a winner at IU. Fife is likely the guy at Michigan State when Izzo retires. Why not grab him now before he's whipping us as Spartans coach in a decade. -

Though I think Fife would be a good hire for them....Minnesota is looking for guys who have ties to the state. Article in the Star Tribune yesterday about a former Timberwolves coach who is interested. Fife has ties to our state. He already recruits in Indiana. The notion that blue blood programs only hire other established experienced "can't miss" coaches is just not correct. UCLA just hired from Cincinnati and before that from New Mexico. Fife is a unique situation for Indiana....the top assistant for the league's best program who just happens to be an IU grad. -

NFL and college teams hire top assistants all the time. Michigan State has been the best program in the Big Ten for 20 years. Dane Fife helped build the MSU culture - including recruiting. Let's duplicate that here. He was at IU during Knights firing and instead of transferring helped lead us to the national title game. I actually think Fife would be a great hire for any Big Ten team.
