Candidate Thread: Brad Stevens (Boston Celtics)

Given who may have been interviewed so far, I wonder if Dolson has been interviewing for an interim head coach position. -

Seems like there are a lot more important causes if you want to fight against dishonesty, and I'd be all for it. I'm not sure what harm this is causing. No one's going to riot or be killed if Brad Stevens doesn't come. -

I have no problem with high expectations. The nauseatingly negative opinions about a coaching search that people know absolutely nothing about yet are childish. -

Ask Jawaan Howard about him, though. NBA "resume" is about a lot more than wins and losses, especially if you're trying to translate it to college success. -
Good question. I guess the honest answer is I don't know. I'm 55 and an IU grad. I've invested a hell of a lot of time and money into Indiana basketball over the years. I want a big name that has a high chance for success. They can operate in the "grey area" and I'm fine with it. Absent that, I at least want an IU guy I can root for. Another mediocre hire AND with no ties to the program, and there's a good chance I'm done.

If Woodson is honestly under serious consideration, I'd ask why not Keith Smart. Former IU player, former NBA head coach, highly respected assistant, and 6-7 years younger than Woodson. -

I guess I'm confused, if all the rumors are to be believed, why Dolson started with his A-list candidate, and when that supposedly fell through he pulled out his D-list instead of waiting for the Bs to finish the tournament. -

So Goodman was standing next to Matta a half hour ago yet somebody else broke the story that IU signed him but he failed his physical. -

Candidate Thread: Nate Oats (Alabama)

We'll see. We can speculate on who will come and who won't, but we don't know until we try. I suspect good coaches will know they can come here and consistently win big, make a lot of money (at least it appears we are offering a lot), and be considered a hero in this state for bring the program back. But again, we'll see. -

I love Oats. Like Beard, he's a difference-maker, both at Buffalo and now Alabama. Those are the guys you want, in my opinion. -

I took it to mean IU was his dream school as a kid, but it's not anymore. -
Candidate Thread: Chris Beard (Texas Tech)
IUHoosierJoe replied to Hovadipo's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
I think Beard is a great coach. One of the ways I judge a coach is to look at how he has done at his school compared to his school's overall history. Tech has little history. They made it out of the first round of the tournament a grand total of 6 times before Beard got there. He's arguably already the most successful coach they've ever had, including Bob Knight. He's already had more consecutive winning seasons than any coach they've ever had. Likewise, at Arkansas-Little Rock, look at that school's record the year before he got there (13-18) and the year after he left (15-17). Yet, he was 31-5. He's a difference-maker, and that is hard to find. He hasn't coached at places where everybody generally wins, like Archie and Crean had. And for icing on the cake, he knocked Purdue out the tournament at both schools. -

I guess if a guy wants to prove he's a biased fool, he might as well leave no doubt. -

Sounds like a lot of people are saying about the same thing: Brad, unlike before, decided to listen to us. He told us what it would take to get him, and we met his demands. Now we're waiting to see if he will actually accept what he asked for. Is that close to accurate? -

I was told years ago that Greenberg wanted the job either when we hired Sampson or Crean. I guess it lost some luster when he didn't get it. -

Hmmm....2 guys Indiana is 15 years late to the party for. If Matta is healthy enough to coach and recruit at the level he used to--and I don't see how he can be--I prefer Matta. Beilein is great, but if Dolson is looking for a vision for the future, Beilein's vision is soon-to-be retirement. It wouldn't make any sense to me. -

Agree with you. I wanted Beard when Archie was hired, He just looked like an up-and-coming star back then. I'm a bit concerned he hasn't been able to sustain that extra-high level with his own roster, but it's Texas Tech. Nobody is going to win big every year there. Drew has had rebuilding years at Baylor, too. I'd prefer Beard, but again would be happy with both. -

Good question. Musselman has NBA head coaching experience, so advantage to him there. Everything else I'd have to give to Oats. Oats is 10 years younger, plays a more attractive style to recruits, and appears to recruit a little better. Overall I'd give the advantage to Oats, but I'd be happy with either one. -

I find the use of the word "been" interesting. "It's been an amazing challenge and opportunity." That's past tense. Like it's almost over. -

And when Coach K retires, Duke should hire Tommy Amaker.
