    They Fired Tom Allen!

I love how Kevin Wilson has become such a great coach here. He was 8-32 in the Big Ten before Tom Allen came, lol.

Back in the late ‘70s and early ‘80s, I always bought Street & Smith. Even way back then, they’d have probably a first through fifth team All-Americans (25 players) and then they’d have several pages listing high honorable mention and honorable mention. It was the most comprehensive I knew of back then.

He’s the starting QB for St. Francis in Fort Wayne (NAIA).

Just to pass time before the McNeeley announcement, I used my NET-like computer model that I posted here during basketball season on college football (FBS-only games). These generally track fairly close to the human polls, but not this year so far: (Indiana is #97) 1 Oklahoma 2 Ohio St 3 Penn St 4 Washington 5 Michigan 6 Oregon 7 Florida St 8 Texas 9 Notre Dame 10 Duke 11 Mississippi 12 North Carolina 13 USC 14 Alabama 15 Oregon St 16 LSU 17 Air Force 18 James Madison 19 Georgia 20 Kansas St 21 Tennessee 22 Miami FL 23 Clemson 24 Utah 25 Iowa

Well, we started out good. Maybe this week we change to longer practices to help keep the intensity level up for more than one quarter.

    They Fired Tom Allen!

I’m the last one to get on a message board and bash coaches. But if there is one thing I’m extremely disappointed in with Tom Allen, it’s our (lack of) defense. I thought defensive acumen was one thing Allen brought to the table. I’ve read the arguments that a better offense would help the defense. While I understand that, I’m not sure I agree it would make much difference. I look at a program like Iowa, whose offense has been terrible, probably worse than ours. Their defense scratches and claws and keeps them in every ballgame, even against really good teams. That’s their culture. That’s what I hoped Allen was bringing to Indiana. That’s not been our culture since long, long before Allen, I realize. Our culture has always been closer to “when things go bad, throw in the towel.” Unfortunately, even though he’s supposed to be a defensive coach, Allen hasn’t had any success in changing that.

He’s actually a good offensive mind.

    They Fired Walt Bell

It was just called the Bob Knight Show. We got it on Sundays at noon. Some may remember the time in 1981 when he had a donkey on as a guest.

You’re exactly right. On Knight’s call-in show, callers didn’t get on the air, but asked questions to the show’s producer. The producer then passed the questions he thought Knight might answer to Fischer, who read the questions over the air to Knight, who was usually eating dinner at home during the show and obviously talking with food in his mouth. Even though the questions were screened, Knight still either refused to answer some of them or answered sarcastically, lol.

    IUMS vs Michigan - Tuesday, 09.26.23 @ 7:30

The sad part is the defense is championship level IMO. But yeah, the offense is the worst I’ve ever seen here.
  12. Indiana State was god-awful in their opener. While I don't expect Indiana's offense to dominate, I think their defense and special teams will put 2 or 3 TDs on the board to make the score look worse than it was. Indiana 50, Indiana State 0.

While I understand your frustration with that, IU football has never won those games. I'm 57 years old, and I was an IU student during Mallory's best years. Yes, he beat Ohio State and Michigan when they had relatively down years, but he rarely even competed against anyone really good. He was 1-39 against teams that finished in the top 3 of the Big 10. And Mallory is the standard-bearer. Now, you're welcome to demand a new coach every few years and have expectations that IU football has never come close to meeting, but 50 years of IU football tell me you're wasting your time. And you're welcome to tell me I'm "happy with mediocrity," which is always the go-to line, but I'm not happy with it. It's simply called facing reality.

My nephew went to Miami (OH). Always sort of reminded me of a small version of IU.

    (2022) - SG C. J. Gunn to DePaul

I'm not playing hypotheticals at all. You're the one posting that you're so sure what is going to happen in the future, who won't improve, who won't start. I have no idea. I don't know how anyone can know for certain who is or isn't starting next year. Can we guess? I suppose so. But that would require a lot of hypotheticals--who improves a little, who improves a lot, who doesn't improve much at all, who might be injured, etc., etc. Seems kind of silly to make a definitive statement as to who is not starting without knowing all those hypotheticals. I'd love to see Gunn make a Tom Coverdale-like improvement going into his sophomore year. That would help us a lot. Will he do it? I don't have any idea. You have apparently decided he can't, or won't, or didn't. If you're so certain what is going to happen in the future, maybe help me out with lottery numbers. I don't usually play, but if you can see into the future with that type of certainty, I might spend a buck. I didn't think my point was really that hard to understand. I thought it was pretty obvious, in fact.

I don’t really care about last year. Players work hard in the offseason and sometimes improve dramatically, especially between their freshman and sophomore seasons. I get that some people either don’t understand that or have looked into the future and decided it didn’t happen. So now, about those lottery numbers…?
