Candidate Thread: Brad Stevens (Boston Celtics)
Indiana8585 replied to Hovadipo's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
Me too I’m glad I’m not alone, people around me think I’m digging too deep but this would be the ultimate smoke screen and it would look legit which is why the insiders and their sources are stunned. Cynical but that’s what it looks like. -

Way Off topic but I’m back living in Madison, IN (hometown) after this darn pandemic if anyone ever needs to drown their IU sorrows with someone and go to the Original Hinkles -

This may sound far fetched but with Beard coaching in Bloomington, do you think that close circle who know sent out all this info did it as a smoke screen for Beard? It’s sounds cynical but they could’ve just leaked it to close friends so nothing was ever official just to keep Beard under wraps for the tournament? -
I’m good with Beard but I won’t be surprised at this point considering everything I’ve seen in my 35 years of being an IU fan. I thought my student years would be the lowest we could fall with Davis, then Sampson, then the rebuild with Crean. Oh and Dak as a coach as well but the last coaching search and these past four years with Archie have made me not doubt how bad we can screw things up. We seem cursed to be honest

Exactly then he made the run with Knights team and talked about leaving for the NBA and got a big extension and raise.

Beard has made the tourney 3/4 times he’s been there and it’s been played. He’s been to two elite eights and a national title game. He won the big 12 regular season in 18-19 ending Kansas long run and so far he’s 3-0 in the first round of the tourney. So beside his first season he’s been great and I’m not sure what your expectations are, but in 4 years if we win the conference, make two EE’s and a title game run I’d be very happy. -

I agree 100% I think he can but it will take a huge financial package to get him here. -

I agree it’s going to be interesting because he already makes 4.7 or close, I wouldn’t want to be the one making the decision. I guess I would because I’m desperate but I agree is it worth it? -

He’s made the tourney 3/4 times it’s been played since going there and made the EE 8 the year prior to going to the title game. So far he’s 3-0 in the first round of the tourney. Also won the regular season conference title in 18-19 which may have been the one that ended Kansas streak. -

I was a student when Sampson was there and he could flat out coach and didn’t even need the phone call problem. When you look at what has gone unpunished at UNCheat and other places it’s frustrating we got hit so hard for telling on ourselves. In ten years at OU he made the tourney 9 times, won 3 Big 12 conference tournament titles, and 1 Regular season title. Also made 3 S16’s, 2 EE’s, and 1 final four. Now at Houston he’s made four straight well three since last year tourney appearances barely losing in the S16 two years ago. -

He’s the worst coach in almost a century of IU hoops in his four years, I don’t know how on earth people could support him coming back. He’s nowhere near Sampson, who’s been successful at Oklahoma, Would of been here had it not been for a dumb rule the ncaa changed two years later and now at Houston he’s been doing great. Crean won two outright big ten titles so regardless of his traits or likability he at least won something. Archie has a brief successful stint at Dayton that’s it, I’m not sure how he’s considered some great coach when he’s been awful at his first big job. -

Congrats on both I have several lawyers and judges in my family I partied a little too much. Haha oh I know I thought ok Crean has us back to number 1 again in 2012 and from that point forward we’ve been inconsistent and awful. We lucked into his second title a little with our conference schedule but beating UK anytime, let alone the tourney was worth the snub of a four seed. Like you say though it’s sad to think those are now looking like the golden years. If they keep him another year I don’t think they realize how bad it would be at Assembly Hall. -

Congrats on graduation, I can’t imagine having had Archie for four years. My senior year was the 6-25 season with Crean but they at least played hard and some m games were still decent to attend. It’s just gotten worse each year for him and that’s got to be frustrating, I used to think seeing Davis, Sampson, Dak (int) and Crean was the lowest we could sink but this just feels worse. Cheers to better days -

Well when I was a freshman at IU Mike Davis got booed the whole year and the next year which was his last. That was just two years after a trip to the title game so missing the tourney again and never having a winning record in conference takes it’s toll IMO no hate just frustration. -

I don’t think some realize how bad but Archie Miller has had the worst conference record of any IU coach in almost 100 years. Even Crean didn’t go four years without a winning conference season. -

He’s already said no and his family wasn’t happy with the way his sisters tenure ended at IU so I think there’s even less a chance he comes than Stevens. -

Mack would be great IMO because at Xavier he could always recruit the state great and being at IU I think it would only be better. -

I thought Bennett was still unhappy about the way his sister left here as women’s coach when we did our search that ended up with Crean. -

Don’t like to blame the refs and I’m not because we’re terrible but these officials have been awful. -
Loved the classic switch to a zone in game and then the team would have no clue what to do. Haha that made me spit my drink all over I always just think of him pacing that sideline pulling his pants up.
-
Oh I agree I thought it was time, but you are definitely correct that we are all seeing the grass isn’t always greener. I’m at the point it’s just hard to even stay interested anymore but I’m not sure who we could realistically even get to come here. Bad times for IU basketball but hopefully hopefully the curse over this program for the past 20 years will fade at some point.
