Curious your views on McCollum in general but compared to a Collins / Brownell type of hire

For sure, probably should’ve clarified the rage (on this board) will be intense at first. The broader fanbase will totally accept the coach right away I’m sure. Those of us who don’t like the hire right away will probably either talk themselves into it or dig their heels in. That’ll be a very minuscule percentage of the fans though IMO.

Ironically, people are not appreciating how terrible Woody is at running a college basketball program when they turn their noses up at guys like Cronin(!) or Collins or even Brownell (who I would not be happy about if he were the hire but think he’d minimally be much better than Woody.) That’s not the goal but Rome wasn’t built in a day and we are hardly a blue blood anymore. Yes we have great NIL but looking at UK and UL last cycle we should not expect to big dawg some other P5 school that already has it rolling. Still tons of decent - great coaches IU can hire. Like it or not that’s progress from the last 8 years.

I think Collins is much better than Woody and their H2H basically confirms that, even with Collins much lesser roster talent. I’m not saying give a crappy coach good players and the team will be good. I’m saying give a good coach with below average players some great players, he may be able to win more.

Yep like you said unless it’s Stevens there will be pockets of people upset about the hire. I mean some people don’t even like Scott Drew and that guy won a title at Baylor. Otz? He had two bad seasons, so he’s off the list. If we get four or five names down the list, or someone out of left field, the rage and fury will be palpable lol

Seems to me like having access to a greater pool of talent could feasibly make a big positive impact on a coach’s ability to win. Agree to disagree.

Look at how NW has trended since he took over. Do you have the imagination to picture a coach doing better at Indiana than Northwestern? I mean, Collins is not my top choice and I doubt he leaves, but the guy is a good coach IMO. The results are the most important thing but W-L record hardly ever tells the whole story IMO.

I don’t get why if Dolson supposedly has known who the next coach would be for months, the scheduling of the games has nothing to do with the next coach? If you have a coach in waiting, wouldn’t you get their opinion on scheduling? Seems unlikely they would know months in advance. Maybe a good sense for their options, and now do know. Maybe. Looking forward to announcing a really good coach.

I am inclined to root for Mgbako being that he’s from a town less than 20 minutes from me. I think he’s got potential still, despite getting less than no help from Woodson and staff IMO. Hard to cheer for him when effort is lacking. But I also don’t feel like he is set up to succeed here. I’d like to see him for a different coach. Can’t imagine he won’t transfer anyway.

Might miss the first 10 minutes or so. Going to the Delaware Blue Coats vs Rio Grande Valley Vipers game tonight. Markquis Newell from KSU and Thon Maker are on the vipers. I thought Thon and his brother could help Crean build a monster once upon a time lol.
