It’s February 18 and the earliest we’re likely to hear anything about our new coach officially is probably March 23 after the second round ends, with the portal opening March 24. This entire season has been a dud and with over a month to go, the only real entertainment value IUBB provides right now is sh!tposts on a message board. What’s done is done and we can’t change the past but this is the part of the year where I find the inaction last spring so frustrating. If we made the captain obvious move last offseason we’d probably be 1st in the B10 right now and have all sorts of actual basketball related things to discuss. Instead we have to toil away beating dead horses and hoping we’re pleasantly surprised. IU has conditioned us to expect the worst when it comes to basketball. I so hope this next hire changes that…

But it’s also a Sunday and there’s no way an announcement like that would happen on a Sunday. March 3 would make the troll marginally more believable but no anonymous internet poster would have this info especially not 2 weeks in advance. Dude needs to get a life

I would be thrilled with high 20s, low 30s win in a season. Cronin has won 30 games 3 times in his career. Anything can happen in a single elimination tournament. He made the FF in 2020-2021. Cronin, while not a “home run” hire … would be a very good hire.

Ideally on the younger side Obsessive about basketball and continuously improving / learning his craft as a coach Has a clear philosophy and system on both sides of the ball that he recruits to. Actually evaluate prospects no matter the star ranking. Have strong ties to the regional basketball community and respect in national circles Able to be the face of the program: do well at camps with kids and students, donors, admin/faculty and staff, etc. Treat the janitor with the same respect as the CEO vibe. I’m okay with being an uber curmudgeon if you’re a good guy underneath it all. Long track record of success as a HC Clean track record off the court Great organization skills - process oriented with a way of doing things he can plug in and tweak as needed Know how to be a good leader including how to deal with different kids personalities and press their buttons in the right way to get the best results. Be involved in their lives off the court Experienced enough to deal with IU’s fanbase, reporters and admin. Know what battles to pick and how and when to go about them. Be an energizer bunny for our brand. Make IUBB fun again.

It’s pretty accomplished. In the grand scheme of things there are not a lot of coaches who can say they’ve done that. Doesn’t mean he is the right guy for IU. I appreciate our new friend joining the board and sharing what they are hearing. Nothing personal against Mark, but he’s been out of coaching for a while. Woody wasn’t a HC when we hired him either. Can IU not pull a sitting head coach? If we make it through the list all the way to Turgeon, we may be able to win at a better rate, but I just don’t think I’ll be able to stomach it knowing Quinn/Dolson cost us Dusty May being a year too slow. It will be hard to get excited

So you have knowledge into how IU is conducting its search when you say things like “exploring like they’re exploring … right now”? And you have 1 degree of separation from Turgeon? What’s your take on if IU hired Turgeon? If we have to go that far down the list I’m very concerned.

True not definitively but you can say that with a reasonable degree of certainty IMO. Theres no way you have a deal with anyone actively coaching another team right now. That takes 99% of candidates off the table, unless we are getting either the white whale or Mark Turgeon. Which I’d assume are both close to 0 as of now. There could a “deal” as in an understanding of mutual interest but most likely not any kind of actual agreement on a contract. IMO.

This board is adding a new character every day lol. Color me intrigued by our new friend with a connection to Turgeon. There is definitely not a deal with anyone at the moment IMO
