For sure. Because the leadership of IU very apparently has an issue with their culture/processes, etc. Because Quinn Buckner is corrupt. Because Woodson is a deluded egomaniac with rich donor friends. Because Dolson kowtow'ed to the powers that be, probably in the name of self-preservation. Too many people in positions of power looking out for themselves and not the university or basketball program. Sure feels like they need to get this hire right or risk the apathy growing/becoming permanent. Football school?

This is really all there is to say about IUBB for the next month or so.

If anything, maybe Dolson asked Goodman and Stevens to squash IU fans speculation early so that people have some time to come to grips with their crushed dreams before the new hire is announced, lol. Give the next guy a fair shake when he's introduced even if he's not named Brad Stevens... Just another thought... Not saying that's the case.

I’m not a Goodman fan… at all. In the slightest. That said, again working under the smoke screen theory set of assumptions which I don’t personally buy into… this would be super coordinated. Brads team would give Goodman the generic “being a Celtic makes me feel warm and fuzzy” quote and tell him to state Stevens isn’t a candidate. That’s where all the ambiguity is invited. Don’t think there’s anything actually there IMO. Being wrong would be cool though. Just hoping Dolson actually knows what he’s doing this go round.

I don’t buy the smoke screen theories, but I think there’s a simple enough answer for the people who do. People who think the smoke screen theory is real believe both parties want less smoke until the right timing. Give Goodman that statement to squash it. Then when the timing is right, Goodman gets to break the news which would massively boost his profile IMO. Again I don’t buy the theory but there is a straightforward enough answer.

Yup. I’d say the odds of any timing other than that are slim to none. May as well call it 0 IMO.

He has no real reason on paper to leave the Big 10 school he’s currently winning at and about to get a raise from just because IU is his alma mater. Would be cool if he did. Just would be surprising to me. Maybe he won’t want to deal with UM’s strict academic requirements for transfers and what not. The IU job for sure has better resources available financially. But he’s got a good thing rolling already. Maybe it’s a losers mentality to quit after a year on a team you built at a university that wanted you so you can crawl home to a school that told you no thanks just last year. Maybe the competitor in him says Dolson and IU can kick rocks, I’m gonna be Michigan’s Bob Knight. Hope not. We’ll see who we hire in about a month.

Lol, just different ways of looking at it I guess. He’s already winning at Michigan. What makes IU so great when they didn’t want him last cycle? If anything I’d get him wanting to stick it to IU, even if he loved his time there and has fond memories/family connections. Dolson passed on him (whether that’s because of Quinn/others doesn’t really matter). The scrutiny that the IUBB HC gets, with his family in the area, is a valid concern when you’re already winning at a prestigious Big 10 school that’s about to pay him well. Is IU in 2025 so special that’s worth walking away from to restore glory? Would be cool if he thinks that way. Not sure he’ll weigh out the decision that way taking everything into consideration. IU really F’d up not getting him last offseason IMO.

Yeah family’s lives in Indiana is a big part. Guess you could also say one in the hand is better than two in the bush. Already got it rolling at Michigan. It’s a risk to leave for IU when you factor in the family aspect. Payoff could be great, legendary. Not sure if that’s enough. Hope so. Would be very pleasantly surprised

My obligatory defense of Hurley as his #1 fan on this board He did not do as good of a job in the portal as he had to for a 3 peat IMO. Mahaney from St Mary’s has been mostly a dud with a few bright spots. No Cam Spencer replacement. That’s been McNeeley, who also is the Steph Castle replacement. He is a key player for them and has been injured for a few games. Karaban who they also rely on has been dinged up too. Their perimeter defense is worse this year than the past 2. If they got a guy like Koby Brea at Kentucky who they were in on they’d be looking much better. I forget who else but there was a very good PG they were in on and Hurley supposedly chose Mahaney over. So miss there. And they got Tarris Reed from Michigan in the portal. He has looked good, but he’s not Clingan and the duo with Samson Johnson just doesn’t work as well. Johnson is a decent but frustrating player. I like Hassan Diarra but same thing to an extent. They got a highly rated freshman guard Nowell but he has only really seen spot minutes. Fans have wanted to see more of him. Hurley has been bringing along Ross and Stewart, two wings / stretch guys who should be good contributors next year. Them plus Karaban, sophomore Nowell and if they can get Solo Ball to come back + their freshman class, they’ll be right back in it. IMO he missed last portal cycle but hasn’t lost his fast ball. He will have a good roster next year, had bad injury luck this year and still wouldn’t bet against them making a S16 in a down year even if they’re an 8 seed or lower.

Starting a new job is pretty exhausting between meeting new VIPs/admin, then the actual work and recruiting in college sports on top of off court obligations. You generally just have really “settled in” after a year on a new job. IMO it would be exhausting to think about doing that in back to back years especially when UM and IU are very comparable right now. UM even may have a slight edge. Unless they really want to be in Bloomington I think taking the job at IU only ends up making things more complicated / potentially strained with family

Oh yeah, I agree it has no place in this thread. You’re spot on. I just want this to stay a sports board and not a politics board because I want to keep on liking most of you cats lol
