I think this year we became a football school and the next basketball hire will probably just end up cementing that. Fine by me. -

Yeah but it seems Dusty would prefer to be at Michigan than Indiana -

His one year in D1 is likely going to be better than any Ray Harper has had already. Harper’s D2 success was in the 90s, McCollum still has his fast ball. Biggest question IMO is can he recruit at p5. With our resources, I bet yes. Not saying we should jump straight to him but I don’t think this comparison is very apt. -

Does it not stand to reason that those schools found something that disqualified him from their consideration? And therefore IU may reasonably draw the same conclusion? -

Seems so unfortunately... I have no idea what's realistic to expect with this search. Just of the names we throw around, and what I think is realistic (probably missing a few people, no particular order within tiers) Tier 1: McDermott (I'd put Drew and McCasland here if I thought either would leave TX) Tier 2: Cronin/Buzz Tier 3: Gates / Pitino Jr. Tier 4: Calhoun, Byington, McCollum, Schertz -

IMO 0 chance Otz leaves ISU. He's spent a lot of time there. Wife likes it there. Just getting started. Thats where he wants to be it seems to me. -

You said Huh? so thought you wanted an explanation. Never said you said any of that. Other people have on the board. Its whatever to me who people want, we're all just sharing opinions that don't ultimately matter -

Basically the inverse of calling people holier than thou or saying they're virtue signaling for saying they don't want Beard. Lol -

Yeah. Will the reasons off the court happen again? That's literally the entire issue with Beard. Nobody thinks he's not a very good coach. Many here are overestimating him. And not paying any mind to his downside risk, just the upside. People can hope for who they want but if they think this admin is hiring him they're setting themselves up to be letdown IMO. -

His winning percentage in the Pac 12 and Big 10 is almost an entire 10 bps higher than it was in the Big East (during some pretty good years for the conference IIRC) and AAC. .608 compared to .690. That's basically the difference between winning 6 or 7 games out of 10. Nonsense. Chris Beard is sub .500 in the SEC at Ole Miss. In the Big 12 at Texas Tech he was 49-40 (.551). -

Fact or not a fact? Beard coached less than 1.5 seasons at Texas. Not getting into why that happened. Just that it occurred. That was in 2022-2023 and he still drinks. Therefore hardly a slam dunk, guaranteed to restore IU to glory hire. He couldn't get it done at his alma mater. Why is he going to get it done here? He loves IU so much? Coz of RMK? -

And lasted not even 1.5 seasons at Texas. Not so successful there. Beard has a runner up finish and an E8 to his name. Cronin has 4 S16s, one of which was a F4 trip. Anything can happen in a single elimination tournament. Beard overall winning pct is .703, in conference is .613. Cronin's overall .683, conference .702. Mick Cronin will be the youngest active coach to 500 career wins before the end of this season. Hardly worth crying over. -

I think more than 15 names before Turgeon. Who are the 7-8 you see before Cronin? I don’t think many of the more popular names are very likely to happen. Personally I’m bracing for much worse than Cronin lol -

I admire the optimists amongst us. You guys should figure out a way to bottle that up and sell it :) I have an extremely hard time finding any sort of positives in this Dusty extension... -

Mick Cronin is inevitable. Lol. Maybe Buzz Williams. Hopefully McDermott or McCasland, if that's possible. I don't think Oats, Drew, Beard, Otz, etc. are on the table. During the football search, don't think many of us were talking about Cig other than Lebowski. Wonder if the basketball hire comes out of left field too. Hopefully in a similarly good way if so. -

I'd be much more willing to entertain the idea if he quit drinking for 5+ years and committed to doing speaking engagements about the dangers of binge drinking / violence against anybody. Even if he lived a very visibly different lifestyle in the public for years, people would still have doubts IMO. All it takes is one night falling off the wagon. Doesn't look like he's changing his ways so I'd say he hasn't earned the chance to be IU's head coach until he does. Especially since he already got a second chance to be a D1 HC at Ole Miss. As it stands today, I think he'd be a hire with a good amount of upside and a very decent chance of something going terribly wrong. A similar tenure to Sampson's would be crushing. In the worst case scenario, the headlines would be absolutely explosive. We can find other HCs this cycle capable of winning big without the same risk. If Dolson hires him, I'll just have to trust he's confident that it won't happen again. But since UT fired him for cause and we already apparently passed on him after doing due diligence, I don't see it happening. IMO people would do well to warm up to some of the less sexy names on the list. There are enough very good/great coaches not named Brad Stevens/Dusty May/Chris Beard that I have to believe we can find and hire one of them. -

In fairness he may be elite in that category... not sure how many other active coaches can match his record on that...
