Honestly from what I recall that entire conversation was in a pretty hopeful context... as in everyone still acknowledging we really should pick up a guard. Some rationalizing that it's more of a "nice to have" than a "must have" Pretty silly to bring that up as if you're gonna get true fan points for it or something.

Sorry if I'm jumping the gun mods, but figured this may warrant it's own thread to focus the conversation. Feel free to move into college bball thread if a better fit. Very favorable bracket. For as bad of a season as it's been, the 6 seed in the BTT gives us a long shot chance to try and salvage things (first ever BTT championship? lol) IMO, rooting for Michigan over. PSU. Wouldn't feel great vs. PSU at all. Not convinced we can beat Nebraska, but hey... if we do and we get lucky with Iowa or OSU upsetting Illinois... we can get romped in the championship game vs. Purdue... since we aren't going to the NCAA without winning the tournament anyway... let's hope they get upset too (blows that I think we could play them 100 times this year and lose all 100). I always want there to be more IUBB to watch, but I'll be more excited about the NIT if we end up going than the BTT (unless we go on a cinderella run in it and get lucky with matchups) I'm ready for portal season.

If the portal is going to be your main recruiting strategy, you better have a darn good relationship/handle on these agents. Not wake up one day and find yourself beholden to them. If you're going to build a majority of your roster through the portal every year... that sounds messy. Agents will have to accept some give and take along the way... that's the nature of building relationships. Everyone's got to uphold their end of the bargain, including the player. If they don't deliver and the coach does not feel it's what is best for the team (to start them, X amount of mins, etc.) the agent and player will have various ways of handling that situation. Where the politics of it all will ultimately play out is by how well the team does... that's where most of the merit in the decision will lay. Can't burn bridges, but it's not like agents have all the power as some make it out to be. I mean, if we left a roster spot open last year that could have been Caleb Love but couldn't because we were "too committed" to XJ/Trey so we couldn't guarantee a clear roster upgrade the starting role he could have had (how often have we said Trey would be a great 6th man)... it does not sound like a successful main recruiting strategy. Since he will be back, I feel like I have no choice but to give him the benefit of the doubt and hope he's learned from the last rodeo and uses his funds effectively. The only thing that will make me let up right now is if we A) win the BTT B) land prominent backcourt commits very early in the transfer window. Let's see what's up their sleeve with these "better portal connections" ... hopefully not a wet fart.

NGW is definitely right about where he stood on JHS/MM. He was vocal about that when others said MM should not see the floor at all, Banks should play over him, etc. Someone said as much in a very recent game thread but I will not call them out here. I believe NGW had quite a back and forth with BGleas on this. (apologies if I'm mistaken) Pretty sure I recall everyone clamoring for another guard though. Any reference to Yogi, I would assume were made in jest/talking about him as an upperclassmen. For this season though, I think 99% of people were concerned about backcourt quality/depth.

In your opinion, is the MVA pipeline in any way damaged / lost with McNeeley's decommitment? Any insight into the key relationships with MVA ... you seem to be the guy to ask

Being in Indiana and all... I'd think if you can land a few of the top 50-100 4 star type guys/3 star hidden gems from within the state each recruiting cycle, keep them there for 3-4 years... you'd be able to use the transfer portal to grab big fish effectively each year. Focusing on filling holes/landing best talent available where you can upgrade the roster. Seems more sustainable to me.

I don't see why Gallo apparently would be okay with a bench role next year but wasn't this year? Not even open to the idea of the staff saying, hey we're bringing in a guard and you will have a chance to compete with X for the other starting spot? Anyhow its all water under the bridge now since he is back next year. Please prove people wrong Mike

I take the blame on fans as spin from the staff because the McNeeleys probably worried that Woodson would not be there for the entirety of Liam's time there (past next season?). My own interpretation. Definitely could be wrong. I'm sure NGW will probably tell me that. Does the W stand for Woodson? :)
