Yep. And the Texas issue took place during those 4 years. People won’t like hearing it but if he is not chosen, it’s not because IU is holier than thou. It’s because the guy ruined opportunities for himself by having a problem with drinking and getting violent. Look people have vices and can perform at a high level consistently but those people are outliers. In many cases they are ticking time bombs between incidents. People make mistakes and yes believing in second chances is good, that doesn’t mean he gets this particular chance. He’s blown that for himself (in all likelihood). Shame because if there weren’t such bad skeletons in the closet he’d be the obvious hire.

Yeah, my issue is less with play style and more his body of work (lack of years). They play 7 guys this year, 4 D2 transfers and a JUCO. He’s always played a slow pace but I think passing up fast breaks is somewhat intentional by design with this group. I am baking in an assumption that he would coach not like a carbon copy of this one year. He is still young so I would assume able to adapt on some level. He is smart enough I think to figure things out given time and resources. I think it’s a moot point anyway since he’s very unlikely to be hired IMO. Totally fair to not like passing up open shots, frustrates me too when I watch them.

Have you watched Drake this year? They are not holding the ball for an eternity each possession. They are passing and cutting working for the best shot.

I think McCollum is as good a basketball coach as you are going to find but I don’t think that means he is the guy for IU this particular cycle. In an ideal world where the program was already rolling and looking to hand over to a great coach for the next 20 years, he’d be close to perfect for me on paper. But the time horizons seem off because he’d absolutely need a few to several years to learn the ropes at a big program like IU. There’d be a few learning curves. Don’t doubt he could figure them out but it would take him probably the better part of a decade. So while I think he’d be successful here long term and wouldn’t hate the hire (in the very unlikely scenario it gets to him) I think we get a bigger fish with some more name recognition who probably recruits at a higher level overnight so we can start winning big hopefully right away.

It is a boat load of money. The counterpoint is obviously if the new owners decide they can't lose him and offer a minority stake in the Boston Celtics. $100M/10 yrs vs. another very lucrative contract and like 1% of the Celtics could make the calculation trickier. That said, is the decision strictly financial? As you said, based on his current tax bracket, probably not. If you've always dreamed of doing something and can get paid a boat load of cash to do it, you'll probably consider it. May end up deciding differently, but doesn't mean you didn't think hard on it in the end.

I will enjoy reading the rumors and conversation here but truthfully have no idea who the coach will be until it’s officially announced. Hopefully it’s at least by the time the portal opens on March 24. The sooner the better obviously. Curious to see how they build their staff.

Yeah, it's not even about what he would say though. It's about him obviously being so sensitive he can't even acknowledge the reality of the situation and speak to reporters about it in a composed way yet and needing to be protected from questions as a result
