As far as not following too closely. I was against the extension when it happened. I was a student at the time. My question is: What was present at the time of Crean's firing that wasn't already present by the end of 2013 and especially by the end of the 2013-2014 season (which is when I've always suggested IU part ways). Because every reason he was fired for was clear and apparent by 2013 IMO we didn't learn anything new over the next four years. -

First of all its not complicated why an AD should not have extended him. Yes we did have the #1 pre-season team going into that year. However, you need to take a look at all of the data points, and not just select a la carte what improves your own narrative while ignoring the underlying issues. My theory is that either you're upset because you fully believed in Crean and to this day still refuse to believe that you were wrong by drinking the Kool-Aid he was pouring,. Just admit it was a terrible decision by Glass to extend him. First: what was happening behind closed doors: Crean was undoubtedly rubbing people the wrong way, having his own players conspire behind his back (per sources regarding Yogi and Hanner during the 2012-2013 season), not having a practice schedule, the supposed story of recruiting Kyrie, etc. I don't know all of the stories. but there was enough by Summer 2012 where there were a lot of unanswered questions... Now some of these were things the public didn't have access too at the time, but the AD did, and this should have been factored into his extension decision. Second: Don't forget that IU had other options besides Crean that IU could have went after for their next head coach. Brad Stevens was a coach in the State of Indiana that supposedly had in his Butler contract that the only 2 places he could leave for within the college ranks was Indiana and Duke... so Before you say "So your plan was to fire him with the #1 pre-season team?"... No, i'm not saying that. I'm saying he was never a proven coach at IU. What did he prove outside of beating UK and having 1 nice season out of 4? Without Crean having proved anything it made more sense to wait another year to see what he could do. Additionally, if you as the coach just were rewarded with a massive contract for the results he had, what message does that send? not a competitive one. It made more sense to evaluate him after the year was over by evaluating the situation within the program by interviewing the players, etc. I mean he made S16 rings one year and then cut down the nets after a loss. Truly bizarre stuff happening that looking back were huge red flags Third: Indiana had absolutely all the leverage. Where was Crean going to go? He couldn't have gone to the NBA, he couldn't have left for a better college job... You're saying recruiting? That is a short sided decision that shouldn't impact a coaching decision. Also was Crean really going to be hampered by his contract that he wasn't going to be able to recruit? that notion is a complete farce. Recruiting would have been the same for the 2013-2014 year. However, the recruits for 2014-2015 may have been different because the fan base would have not allowed that contract extension to ever take place. Glass could have happily extended Crean at the END of the season, but he didn't. He ignored all the red flags, he ignored the better coaches within the state that wanted to coach there, and because of that our AD signed one of the worst extensions in all of college basketball. BTW, I completely understand that firing a coach with a pre-season #1 team is ludicrous... But choosing to wait less than 365 days before handing him that extension is more than reasonable. For complete disclosure, I also have been adamant on here that I firmly believe Chris Beard is a better coach than Archie Miller. I say that very objectively because I'm sure you're thinking to yourself "well what would SouthernIndianaHoosier2 do if he were AD".. As AD I'm moving on to Chris Beard at the end of this year, barring a miracle. -

Um... what? He could have fired him, or not extended him. As shown when he was fired no other top program wanted him. he couldn't leave. IU had all of the leverage. -

Has anyone had a chance to look at and Vote for Brian Davidson for BOT? He's running on a platform of keeping athletic dollars in the athletic department. For those that want change I believe he is the catalyst. Regardless of if you like to AD or not, Brian would be a great addition to the BOT. I couldn't find if this was posted on BTB or not, but figured this would be a good place for it! https://dataforms.iuf.iu.edu/trustee-election/vote -

I’m saying maybe you keep the existing sides of assembly hall as you can’t build that steep anymore and add elements like hinkle behind the goals. Or maybe you find a happy medium getting as close to hinkle and Phog as possible. From a financial analysis perspective it wouldn’t make sense on paper, but upgrading to something better, yet not Yum center is totally possible Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners mobile app -

IMO a great AD and leader would help build a new arena that was along the lines of Allen Fieldhouse, Hinkle Fieldhouse, Cameron Indoor, the Pit, Assembly Hall, and all the other greats. Not a soulless bland, sterile, antiseptic type arena like the YUM center. Again I'm for a new arena, but not if its like the YUM Center. -
Beilein has agreed to a 5 year deal with the Cavs
southernindianahoosier2 replied to Hovadipo's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
You really think Cool Dad is more intelligent than that? Another poster mentioned he heard IU was never willing to pay Billy more than he was making at OKC. So If you ask literally anyone, they would tell you that we have no chance of landing any coach if we are offering less than they are currently making. So from simple logic, acting like we have a shot at getting billy D by offering him the same or less money is not realistic and would be seen as a smokescreen to most. -

That's the most IU thing I've heard in a while. I know its not the right thread to say this in, but change at the top cannot come soon enough. -

I wonder how far IU would fall if we ranked administration as well. My guess is our administration (AD, President, etc) would be between 9 and 14. -
(2019) SF Trendon Watford to LSU
southernindianahoosier2 replied to IU Hoosier41's topic in Indiana Basketball Recruiting Forum
As a person who was at the Rutgers game, we lost because the team didn't even look like we wanted to be playing. It was hands down the worst effort I've ever seen a team give. The last maybe 2 minutes we actually played hard. Had we played hard the whole game and lost I would agree. But to me it was way more of an effort issue than a talent issue. -
Is Archie Miller Better than Mick Cronin?
southernindianahoosier2 posted a topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
Recently my friends were making fun of UCLA hiring Mick Cronin. I thought it was a terrible hire too. However, I've taken a look at Cincinnati's records on Kenpom and they seem like pretty similar to Archie's. Which begs the question. Is Archie a drastically better coach that Mick Cronin? The more research I do, the more it seems that Archie is just a younger more promising Mick Cronin, but not necessarily better at the moment. What are your thoughts? -
Indiana university alternative timeline
southernindianahoosier2 posted a topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
I’ve been thinking about 3 distinct alternative timelines regarding Indiana basketball all starting in 2008: 1. In 2008 Iu doesn’t self report and Kelvin Sampson ends up taking Eric Gordon to the final four and ends up winning a championship with Zeller in 2011-2012 or in 2014-2015 loaded with Indiana guys. 2. Tommy gets fired after his 3rd consecutive losing season and we hire Brad Stevens who takes Zeller in his second year to a national championship. He’s still coaching at IU today and we are back to being a blue blood. 3. We fire Tom Crean after the 2014/2015 campaign and we hire Archie. We give him 5 years to build a program and after next year we let him go to hire Chris Beard (which would be next year. A seamless transition and no rebuild. A bob Knight disciple who runs a similar style as the Hoosier faithful are used to. Bringing us back to blue blood status. Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners mobile app -

2019 Off-Season IU Roster News and Moves
southernindianahoosier2 replied to CrossboneIU22's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
Maybe he was working as hard as possible without seeing playing time. Lets assume he was practicing hard for weeks and didn't see the floor so he started practicing even harder. After all these hard practices he still doesn't see playing time. A good coach will know his players goals and then lay out expectations while guiding them on how they can achieve their goals. It appears that many players on this team didn't agree with what the coach was saying and packed it in. Its almost a classic case of doing poorly in school to punish the parent. -
2019 Off-Season IU Roster News and Moves
southernindianahoosier2 replied to CrossboneIU22's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
Sometimes players play better in games than they do in practice. It can also be a downward spiral for someone like Jakel that if you're not playing in games, why would you practice harder? I get that if you're not playing you should practice harder to prove yourself. But lets say you practice harder for weeks and still don't see the court, its so easy to give up. Especially when you see players that you think you're better than end up playing ahead of you. It totally makes sense if he gave up and was negative about the entire situation, didn't like the coaching and then drug other players down to his level. Its easy to see multiple players upset at the coaching decisions and acting out behind closed doors or in the locker room when the coach isn't around. From a coaching standpoint, if you only have Fitzner for 1 year and you have Jake for 4, wouldn't it make more sense to play your freshman more to give them that experience so they can contribute more effectively in year 2 and 3? Especially during the 12 game skid... I get everyone's viewpoint, but from the outside looking in, I just don't get why we would make excuses. It reminds me of 2012-2013 when Cody Zeller won the 3pt contest in Hoosier Hysteria and then Crean refused to let him shoot it from outside. A lot of people on sites like this said the same things defending Archie this year as they did Crean. Then in 2015 Wisconsin (with a similar team) let Kamisky shoot the 3 whenever he was open and was feeling it. I'm having flashbacks to the Crean years when everyone was making excuses after excuses defending the coach... Full disclosure is that I think we should Fire Archie for Chris Beard; and knowing that will never happen; I think he should get next year to prove himself. But to call questionable coaching decisions anything other than questionable coaching decisions is anything but helpful when we are trying to resurrect the program and take it back to greatness. -

First this is a thread where we can complain about the idiot administration. Glass is not an AD, he’s a lawyer who know what he’s doing. His body of works says as such. He will never get another AD job in the entire world after IU. His administration is worse than 1930’s Germany when it comes to censorship in the media. He’s made 2 wrong decisions to keep Crean and then made a questionable coaching fire and then hire with football. Second, we can all vote for Brian Davidson for BOT as he is running on a sports first platform. That’s what we can do about it Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners mobile app -

There was someone at the IBj who suggested we take a look at Stevens before we hired Crean. When I typed 2009 it was a typo and I meant to say after the 2010/11 season. I think Zeller would likely have still committed. Either way, you can’t base a decision on who coaches your program based on one commit, which I believe Glass did for Zeller and then again for Thomas Bryant. I don’t think players change programs, I think coaches do Sent from my iPhone using BtownBanners mobile app -
