I hear what you are saying. My point is, when compared to Holtmann and Mack, he’s not looking good at this point in time. I’ll give him a pass on year one, but last year I firmly believe we under achieved, regardless of the circumstances. If and IF we miss the tournament again, I’d be ready to move on if we could get Chris Beard. I don’t want a CTC thing to happen where we make the S16 and everyone loses their minds. I worry that Archie could be similar in the sense that our teams are 1 dimensional and under achieve in the long term. Missing the tournament 3 seasons in a row is pretty bad. I'm giving a pass on year one. Year two we had a play in game against OSU and lost (at home if i'm not mistaken) if we miss in year 3, then what is the barometer for year 4? making the tournament? Lets pretend in a hypothetical world where we miss the tournament for the 3rd year in a row under Archie, and lets pretend buyouts are not an issue, What would you all do?

Glass is so bad at his job that people openly admit that at this point it's his bosses fault for not firing the guy or holding him accountable.

Fred Glass in both 2010 and 2011: "Why would IU go after Brad Stevens, he has a job, and IU has a coach!" Fred Glass in 2018 and 2019: "Why would IU go after Chris Beard, he has a job and IU has a coach!" Fred Glass in 2028 after missing the tournament 13 times in 20 years : "Why would IU go after the next hottest coach, he has a job and IU has a coach!"

They could have not gone after Chris Beard. They could have said "He has a job, why would he leave" and done nothing.

I'm simply asking a question Old Friend. Something that has perplexed me for quite some time. I'm aware of how rumors start, but the fact no one with connections to the program came out and squashed it outright was bizarre to me. Am I impossible to please? No. I'm very clear in my bias that I believe Fred Glass is not the brilliant man that you think he is, but rather one of the worst athletic directors in history. Is he good at capital improvements? Well it seems that same fans think he's doing the bare minimum and others think hes doing great. As I've posted about before; I firmly believe the way he looks at, analyzes, and problem solves issues with IU athletics is not in any way shape of form brilliant. Although past performance isn't always an indicator of future results, it appears that in the begining of the Archie and Allen years, we're set to continue past performance. 7 of 11 missed tournaments, no bowl wins, not a single winning football season. Basketball and Football both are a coin flip of are we better or worse than the year before. If Fred is athletic director for 10 more years and the basketball program missed the tournament 13 of 20 possible tournaments then will you admit you were wrong about Fred? Because I will admit I was wrong about Archie when he wins a championship, and I will admit I was wrong on Allen if we make a bowl, and I will finally admit that I was wrong about Fred.

IU has people that monitor some of the boards, they could have leaked info that Donovan was never contacted. Just my opinion. They don't need to hold a press conference.

If IU did not receive a generous donation for the naming rights of that building, then what an absolute mistake. The building naming rights are worth at least a few million. That money could have gone to scholarships, campus improvements, etc.

Just curious, but if Donovan was never contacted, why didn't the AD or athletic department dispel the rumors? I mean, when fans think they are getting Donovan and then we end up with Archie, it kind of leaves a bad taste in ones mouth. I was listening to the radio and the host was saying former IU players were excited because even they thought Donovan was about to sign a contract. Like how did that rumor not get squashed?

I'm saying if the end goal is win a championship and we have a coach who isn't capable of winning big road or neutral games, then we need to look at that as an evaluator and less on big wins like against Marquette at home.

When i'm evaluating IU's head coach on whether or not he should be extended or fired, I'm discounting big wins on our home court and placing higher value on away and neutral site games. I believe no NCAA champion has ever had a losing away-neutral court record. Additionally, there were some fans that thought Clappy was Naimsmith after some of those assembly hall beat downs he provided regularly, when in fact, he was still clappy.

I'm saying in the pool of candidates IU considered, Fred Hoidberg, although probably very far down the list had to have been considered. He was considered as a replacement on multiple boards, including ITH. Was it realistic? no, but his time in Chicago was clearly coming to a close around the same time IU needed a new coach. He along with a plethora of other candidates including Mick Cronin were definitely in the candidate pool in the begining. Again i'm assuming a top down approach of every coach IU could get at the time of Archie's hire. Apparently Billy Donavan was also in the candidate pool. As the pool and search became smaller and smaller, those guys clearly didn't make the cut. So what i'm saying is if Mick Cronin, Fred Hoidberg, Chris Mack, and Chris Holtmann all end up in better positions after lets say 5 years, then ya, Fred Glass made an absolutely terrible hire. We lost our 2 best players from last year and have not recruited any shooters.And its highly likely that we lost Keon Brooks because of last years performance. I have concerns at this point, but i'm not writing off the season or Archie as a coach. What I'm saying is Archie is outside the treehouse of trust for me, and he needs to start winning tournament games this year and next for me to regain his trust. As far as bad hires. I consider Creans extension before the 2012-2013 season a terrible decision that should have been made at the end of the year. I said it at the time when I was a student even surrounded by all the hype and energy. The second poor decision would be to retain Crean anytime after 2015. the third was the Allen hire.

Again this is something board members would be easily capable of evaluating Archie If we all had inside knowledge of the inner workings of the program. Since we don’t, only time will tell who’s the best hire of the 3. At this point in time, our current coach sits in third position. It’s also quite possible that Hoidberg, who also was a candidate at the time of Archie’s hire is above Archie as well. Judging the hire based on Glass’ prior hiring decisions (including extensions) we will likely end up with the worst coach of the bunch. Again I could be totally wrong and we could be ranked next year and make the tourney, but as of today, it’s looking bad. I am really enjoying debating with you and that is not being sarcastic. Getting old and staying old is great and has been proven to be the most consistent model in winning big in the NCAA. I agree with you there. I will never argue that point with you. I also agree that Firing a coach every three years until one produces is a recipe for disaster. It would signal dysfunction to the NCAA at large and would alienate ourselves from top talent. What I think we're not seeing eye to eye on is the decision making process of Fred Glass. I strongly believe his decision making process should be a macro, top down approach, with the goal in mind. It would look like this; Win Banner 6 (goal) -> what do we need to do to get there -> do we have those things in place -> what do we need to bring or upgrade -> who is best suited to get us there -> look everywhere in the NCAA-> why are other coaches successful -> who is on my short list if we needed to make a change -> evaluate the Macro's at year end -> base any decision on MACRO factors... I believe Fred Glass makes decisions on micro factors like "Well Jordan Hulls had a broken wing that year" - a quote Fred actually said. Looking at specifics in a vacuum is a recipe for disaster at his position. Coaches should look at the Micro, not the AD. I'm not driving or forcing a narrative that Fred Glass is a bad AD while shoehorning everything he does into that narrative.He might be a great guy, good lawyer, friend, and family man. But what he is not is a competitive AD that knows how to make decisions at the Macro level to get us to where IU needs to go. I'm not calling for McRobbies head because the man is retiring in 2020-2021. We've already seen an early adopter in Brian Davidson running for BOT trying to usurp the status quo. That will only grow stronger and when McRobbie is gone hopefully the flood gates open, thus changing the status quo. Archie may or may not be the right guy to win Banner 6. I did a post a year ago or so about how many years it takes new coaches to win a championship. TLDR: if we don't think Archie can make it to a final four by year 5, we need to cut bait. If Archie turns out to be the best of the three available at the time of hire between Him, Chris Mack and Chris Holtmann, then I was wrong and I will apologize. But from what I've seen and some of the intrinsic things i'm judging him on, I don't think we got the best one of the three. I think that will be Chris Holtmann. Because of that, I believe my narrative that Glass has made poor decision after poor decision after poor decision, to be true unless proved otherwise.

I hear what you are saying and appreciate your response. I feel as though you are getting lost in the trees for the forest. At any point in Time during or after the 2013-2014 season there was enough evidence to say that Crean was not the right fit. Not having a practice schedule and other insights have leaked and it appears that he never exhibited a championship level approach (what it would take to win a title here). With that inside knowledge at the time.. as the AD you would have to know that: A. Crean built some fun teams and is capable of doing it again and again B. No matter the talent on the roster, the ceiling was S16 or a miracle final four. C. Retaining Crean. shouldn’t be contingent on a year to year basis It seems that at every breaking point Glass rationalized keeping him and it didn’t pay off the way it hoped. I’m saying the way he approaches decisions and his problem solving logic are way off base. I do believe that Crean and Glass were about to part ways when the rumor of him to Alabama was taking place, but obviously something happened. Where I think you’re wrong again with Glass is it is totally possible he hired the worst of the three available men willing to take the job on 2017. The three being Mack, Holtmann, and Archie. So even after he fired the guy, it could be likely that he again made the wrong decision. Only time will tell, but so far it’s not looking good. I mention Beard a lot on here lol. But as the AD you have to figure out with the inside data you have...if you think Archie will be a championship level coach then great, I can’t wait to win banner 6.... but after 3-4 years you should know what he is capable of and cut bait If you’re not sold. I don’t trust Glass’ decision making one bit. So again, only time will tell. Honest question to you: if Archie misses the tournament and Holtmann and Mack have great success next year do you still believe Fred Glass should keep his job? At what point do you evaluate Glass’ decision making and say “okay, he made bad decisions”. Honestly what is the tipping point for you and how will you evaluate Glass? Have you seen his fireside chats? Great personality. He went to the elite 8, lost his top 7 scorers (Need to double check), then made it to the championship game and lost IMO because of a no-call foul committed by Kyle Guy. Reggie Miller said he runs the best basketball practice he's ever seen in his life. He was an associate head coach under Bob Knight. He's won everywhere he's been. He always beats Matt Painter. I'm telling you, Chris Beard is the best coach I've seen in college basketball since Brad Stevens. guys like him pop up once every 10 years. We missed our chance in 2014, but we have a chance to make it right this time around. P.S. I'm not saying Archie will be a failure at IU, I guarantee he will be better than Crean, but Chris Beard is hands down the best coach in College basketball and if IU wants to be a blue blood again, that is how to do it.

Glass had a chance to hire Brad Stevens away from Butler and he missed that opportunity by extending Crean prematurely. Glass had the opportunity to hire Les Miles, Jeff Brohm, et. al. and he missed the opportunity because he promoted an unproven coach. Glass has not learned from his mistakes in the past, and that is why he'll make the following mistake: Glass has the opportunity today to fire Archie and hire Chris Beard. Chris Beard is OBJECTIVELY the best coach in college basketball that Indiana could get since Brad Stevens. Glass will either extend Archie or wait until Chris Beard is picked up by another Blue Blood. When your vision of the athletic department is to keep your job rather than to build a winning program, you get 7 missed tournaments in 11 years.

Are you saying it goes even above McRobbie? So then who is the biggest culprit on the BOT?

What I hear you saying is that in order for Fred to keep his job he needs to: 1.improve IU Athletics overall. 2.increase donations. Improve facilities. 3.develop the IU brand while staying in the black financially. -We are in agreement that McRobbie does not account for W/L's in Fred's Performance Evaluation. But if you are Fred, and supposedly a fan, why would he only do the bare minimum to keep your job? Why take a job as an AD, if you're not competitive and want to win? This is why I think there is a huge disconnect with Fred and the Fans. The fans want to win, Fred wants to survive in his role.
