General Coach Candidate News
southernindianahoosier2 replied to JaybobHoosier's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
Jesus - So you're telling me that Tom Crean won 8 BT games in 3 years at IU. Then IU didn't make the move on Stevens because of the Zeller recruitment, based purely on one recruit, and then gave him a $10M buyout the following year for making it to a S16? Was there anyone else that was saying Creans S16 years were more of a false positive and ceiling of his potential and that this was a bad idea? -

If we had fired Crean before the 2011-2012 season would we have been able to get Stevens? -

IU candidates were Thad, Woody, and Fife… and we did hire all 3.. not sure what having only those 3 as candidates says about the program -

I’ve been saying this for years, but IU seems to do everything Michigan does just a few years later. -

A couple of quick questions for you…. what is the opportunity cost of waiting? Missing out on beard and May? What is May goes to Louisville, or UNC? Do you want to win a championship or not? All of the greatest winners are overcompensating for some sort of trauma. If everything is a trade off, what are you willing to trade for a championship? -

Chris Beard would turn the program around in one season, and he has the personality to be a great fit for a large fan base (former knight assist, plus if anyone has watched his fireside chats would go crazy for that at IU)… however he comes with baggage. It would require IU to swing big and be ready when the inevitable scandal arrives in B town. Michigan is no stranger to this with this season. Supposedly sabotage from a disgruntled professor leaking info to the press etc. now what Michigan did was get the support of the president and AD to fight back against the allegations, and they won a national championship. if Beard isn’t your man, it would be for personal reasons and not for his coaching, but if he’s not your guy then Dusty May is another one that could fix 90+% of IUs problems. And if you listen to any of his interviews you’ll understand that his FF run was not a fluke, and very different circumstances than Creans at Marquette. if we can’t get either, then in about 5 years another coach will come out of no where a la Brad Stevens or Beard or May that we should absolutely go for, IU’s problem in the past, at least with Crean was we weren’t willing to cut bait with Crean after the 2010-2011 season because he had zeller coming in, now imagine had we pulled the trigger then and hired Stevens away? Based on Dolsons ability to pull the trigger and let a coach go, i hope we make a move on Beard or May, but I’m not sure we do that to one of our former players Remember, Glass, McRobbie, Gonso and Shoulders are gone from the administration that plagued us for so many years, so it’s possible! -

There was a conversation a while back where a poster said Disneyworld didn’t become Disneyworld by simply saying “eh good enough”. Big businesses would call this cultural rot. Interesting to read show dog or watch the “Air” movie about Nike and their “10 principles” out of those that IU has never read lmao: #1. Our business is change #4. This is as much about battle as about business #5 stretch the possible #6 dangers: Burracracy, knowing our weaknesses -

Lol - sorry for bringing the negativity. But I feel it is important dialogue for setting expectations. “How you do anything is how you do everything”… I absolutely love the Cignetti hire btw, love the Woodson hire too. -

Yes, but you have to then take the sweetheart deal, which I’m not sure we’d do lmao. -

IU - where we supposedly have a top10 business school yet don’t understand the definition of what a short term gain for a long term loss means. SMH…. why would they stick with Adidas? -

Interesting I didn’t see the word adidas anywhere… could this mean we’re switching up our sponsorship? -

Who is making all the uniform decisions. I never want anyone to lose their job, but that person should be swapped for someone stylish who is willing to take risks -

Thank you! I feel the adidas contact is a result of Fred Glass making a decision on what’s best for Fred Glass in the short term and not the long term direction of the athletic department, but that’s just my opinion! It appears Dolsen has been doing a great job so far! -

For Reference: Article on Adidas not selling gear fans are trying to buy: https://www.idsnews.com/article/2022/03/column-indiana-fans-want-to-feel-part-of-teams-adidas-stopping-them-apparel-womens-basketball Information around the Adidas Contract: https://indianahq.com/5-things-you-didnt-know-about-ius-contract-with-adidas/ It should be noted that IU is set to renew next year and Adidas has the right to match any offer, had we been gung ho I would assume we would have already announced an extension? So this would be positive news for Nike fans. I've heard a rumor that Woody isn't happy with Adidas, and given his ties to worldwide wes, and with Cig coming from a Nike school there appears to be some momentum. Back in the day I was saying that if we have to stay with Adidas, we should have been a Yeezy Branded school like Michigan is with Jordan, but then Kayne went Crazy lol -

I’ll answer this the best I can. Fred Glass signed the last Adidas deal through his buddy and fellow IU alum who is a VP at Adidas. At the time it provided us with the most up front cash and presumably more $ than Nike. At the time it was one of the largest, because at this point a lot of schools were dropping adidas like third period French and Adidas wanted to keep their remaining premier schools (Michigan dropped the contract and moved to Jordan and we should have done the same IMO) Although it was the most up front cash, fans speculate that it was a short term gain for a long term loss for two reasons 1 : poor apparel sales directly related to Adidas not selling anything the fan base would like to buy - see the daily student article blasting adidas for doing team issue only apparel that the fan base can’t buy. I believe IU gets a royalty for everything sold. And so even if IU got less money up front from Nike, they could get more money from the royalty portion. If you Don’t believe me, go to any Nike schools website and there’s pages on pages of apparel whereas the adidas schools are limited… also Iu isn’t even a tier 1 adidas school (at least in football). So an adidas school like Washington gets these new technology football jerseys etc, and IU gets their bottom tier technology from years ago, which makes it look like a jersey from Walmart. (Also IMO our basketball uniforms don’t fit, they come untucked a lot and kids are rolling their shorts up 1-2) 2. Brands play an important role in recruiting and it’s speculated that Adidas hasn’t helped us get top basketball talent. If you don’t believe me, go to any high school or youth basketball pick up game, it will be 90% Nike gear, and maybe 10% Steph curry/under armour, and maybe 1% Adidas - meaning people are voting with their wallets and Adidas is not what kids want to wear It has been pointed out by fans who went to the Kansas game that there are serious issues with adidas at IU and our apparel in general, which have given rise to the success of companies like homefield (not a bad thing) -

Super excited for the future for both Basketball and Football. Think we're in good spots, still gaps, but progress! Been a pessimist for years. It seems like everything Glass did is becoming undone, in a good way? -

Is this normal for University Presidents to have this much say? Genuinely curious if this is standard or IU has some disfunction where Scott Dolsen can't get his guy -

Would it be wrong to think that he could have a Deon Sanders impact to IU? Call me crazy, but I'm all for it
