Duke looks like a prime example of a team that will eventually get upset by a 13-seed again this year. The high school one and done route hasn’t worked in over a decade. I don’t care how generational Flagg is, they’re gonna get beat by 24 year old men in the big dance.

They must be factoring in our game against OSU and then our game against Oregon. ;)

    2024 IUFB Season

I don’t know, I was asking you. Legitimately. Not adversarially. If your future opponents are baked in, then when you start the season they judge your whole season for strength. Then is it just adjusted each week as your future (and past?) teams played perform better or worse? I guess I just assumed because commentators seem to use “they haven’t played anybody” and “look at their strength of schedule” similarly, that your SOS was backward looking.

So you start the season with the same SOS that you end the season with? Seems like that wouldn’t leave much room for reassessing your schedule strength as teams over/under perform their preseason rankings.

That keeps getting parroted, but does anyone know what number our SOS will be once we play OSU? Are we just being punished because we haven’t played the best team on our schedule and everyone else has?

You’re not crazy. It’s a bad system as soon as conference realignment happened. And why the B1G and SEC had that strategic alliance meeting earlier this fall. There’s zero reason a team you deem the 9th best team in the country should be seeded 4th. It’s dumb. Seed them 1-12 and stop pretending winning a mediocre conference means anything.

I stayed up until 2am watching that Utah game Saturday night. BYU is terrible. Rivalry game or not, they looked awful. If they played in the B1G they would have 4-5 losses.

    2024 IUFB Season

When Georgia lost to Alabama they fell from #1 to #4 in the polls. When PSU lost to OSU they fell from #3 to #6. Precedent has been that losing to a top five team as a top five team doesn’t cost you much. But neither of those had the whole brand bias thing IU would be up against.

    2024 IUFB Season

I feel like all the coverage I’ve read nobody is talking about the obvious here too: the big 12 and ACC suck. Them getting an automatic 3 and 4 seed is screwing up what the matchups should be and creating easy paths for some of the traditional powers coming from the 10-12 spots. Just rank them 1-12 and play ball!

So if they’re rewarding PSU for a close loss to OSU even though they haven’t beaten anyone either. Even if we lose by a TD to OSU we should then jump PSU right? Because we would then have played a top-5 team and be a one loss team. It’s like we’re being penalized for our (hypothetical) loss coming after PSU’s. They really should be rewarding the perfect record more knowing they can move us down if/when the loss happens.

    IUFB vs Michigan - Saturday, 11.09.24 @ 3:30 on CBS-TV

It’s not always gonna be pretty in a long season in a conference like the big ten. That’s unrealistic no matter how talented. You take these wins and move on. I’m sure Miami would rather have a five point win against Georgia Tech right now than their loss. Michigan isn’t a bad team either. Lot of talent. New coach. Still have this too: we’ve only given up five offensive TDs in the last four games. We’re able to win ugly when needed.

Purdue doesn’t even have a soccer team. Even worse.

If there is such thing as the eye test, this Miami game is the equivalent of our MSU game. Except we answered right away and led at the half and ran off 47 unanswered. They are not the 4th best team in the nation. The ACC is weak and they have been down at the half four times now.

Miami has the worst defense I’ve personally ever seen for a top-5 team. We would score 50+ on them.

    IUWBB vs Harvard - Thursday, 11.07.24 @ 7:00 on B1G+

I touched on something like this in a thread a year or two ago. CTM was getting (deservedly) a lot of love for turning our program around and into a top B1G program. I said then, that we needed to start competing with and landing bigger recruits to capitalize on the success. A lot of the response was “I trust CTM to find her type of players” and “we don’t need five stars, we need girls who will commit to playing the way CTM wants.” That was all easy to say when we had Grace Berger’s, McKenzie Holmes, Sara Scalia, etc. We’re talking first team all Americans and best 3pt shooters in the country types. My concern then was that we weren’t recruiting like a Maryland, Ohio State, South Carolina, etc. So at some point the success we were having on the court wasn’t going to translate into sustainable success as a program. I still think CTM is a fantastic coach for IU. This team will certainly grow and be competitive this year. But next year losing CMM and Syd, it doesn’t feel like we used our best years as a program with generational talent to set ourselves up to stay there and become a great program and not just a couple great teams.

Making roughly $66k a game. They’re all good games from his perspective.

Better talent on the court this year. Same coaching on the sidelines. Similar product.

They’re 9-13 from 3pt and 8-14 from 2pt. Something tells me that won’t be sustainable.

    2024 IUFB Season

Bare with me here. And to preface, I couldn’t be more excited about the IU football team and this season. And I’m in no way doubting them or their ability to compete at the highest level which is an incredible statement. BUT… was thinking about this new landscape with the expanded playoff. Do we think that there’s a possibility that finishing in the 9-12 range might be getting a little bit of a shaft from the players perspectives? I mean, great you made the playoff, huge accomplishment. But say you then “get to” travel to play a road game at Texas and lose. Is that lessor than the experience of playing in a premier bowl game and the week-long buildup and neutral warm weather site? Would winning the gator Bowl or Citrus Bowl be a bigger event for the program? Obviously the dream scenario is winning the first playoff game and getting to a Rose Bowl or Orange Bowl. But it feels to me like this might be a downside to the new system is rewarding our best season ever with an extra away game. Heck even if we get to host, it’s not a bowl game, it’s an extra home game in Bloomington in January. Anybody else feel this way at all?

Then IU and UCLA basketball should be ranked in the top ten. Each season should be judged on that seasons results alone.

    College Football Thread

Is there a reason we shouldn’t jump PSU? With Illinois losing again to fall to 3-3 in conf. PSU now have wins over 2-4 UCLA and 2-4 USC (in OT), so their best win is now 5-3 Wiscy who likely loses tonight at Iowa to fall to 3-3 in conf. So they will have not beaten a team with a winning record in conference. They have a loss. Why are their wins better than ours without a loss?
