Thinking about it watching MSU it occurs to me the formula for a consistent program might be to recruit the most talented, but undersized PG available every three years. The only difference between MSU and the rest of the conference, is their best player stayed 4 years (Winston) while other teams lose momentum to the NBA draft every couple years. Duke kind of benefited from that model for a while too, with Reddick, then Grayson Allen, and now Jones. We had Yogi. Maybe that should be a new practice of our recruiting. Grab the best PG under 6 feet available every time we can.

Watching this game to kill time until the Chiefs game. Figured I would see the difference between the congested middle of the Big Ten and a “national title contender,” but MSU looks just as scrambled on the road as the rest of the conference. First time I’ve actually looked, but didn’t realize MSU has played 4 home games so far in conference, and their road win was at NW. Unless this is an anomaly poor start, I think they might regress to the mean with a few more road games under their belt. Edit: as an aside, how OLD is #12 on Purdue?? How unfortunate. I’m 38 and I’m just starting to get some creeping to my hairline. Yikes.

Yeah, no info whatsoever to support my feeling, but I’ve felt like the reclass of Lander has been a theory conjures by us fans who desperately want an impact player in the class next year. My concern is that the cycle continues; we get TJD for another year, but then he leaves before we bring in another top 40 guy to join him and help us get over the hump. Then we lose Phinisee the following year and essentially waste our time with an elite upper classmen PG, sort of similar to Yogi’s senior year. Ugh. Why couldn’t TJD have come a year earlier when we had Ro and a senior Juwan? It’s like our timing is just always one year off from stacking our starting 5. Sorry, didn’t mean to hi-jack the college b-ball thread with IU-centric discussion. On another note, does anyone really believe ‘Ol Roy’s claim that he “forgot to tell his team to foul” before Clemson hit that 3 to tie?? Come on man. He’s just saying that because it went in.

Ha. Fair enough. Is the Lander speculation fan-optimism, or is there a real chance of that happening outside the obvious wishful thinking from us trying to will it into reality?

That’s his name. Thanks. I understand it was close to home for him, but just comparing the two programs it does make you scratch your head and wonder about what else may have been involved to gain his commitment. I feel like IU has been “one more signing away” from having an elite lineup recently. Case in point, Garland and Romeo, or TJD and Keion Brooks. We can’t seem to stack the five stars in overlapping or simultaneous classes, which I think makes a difference when you don’t have a breakout development junior/senior. Now it looks like we may finally get a 5-star to stay another year (TJD), and we didn’t land an instant impact freshman to join him and help turn the corner from fringe Top 25 to Top 10. Just my opinion. I know some prefer the 3-4 star development model of recruiting. Not being negative, but seems like we are always “one more playmaker away” for the past 6-7 seasons.

Who was the recruit who picked Vandy over us recently?
  7. IU Women’s basketball is actually probably number 2 on that list. They’re a top 15 team and honestly I’ve found myself watching them recently as a reprieve from watching the guys lack of fundamentals and offensive sets.

Donovan had serious cold feet about the NBA (see his two days as head coach of the Orlando Magic). He was open about missing many aspects of the college game and building a program. A blue blood offer (at the time) was something he very much considered if the program would have valued him as highly as his agents felt he should have been.

Respectfully disagree. While the hype train might have gotten ahold of it and made it seem like a “dome deal” very prematurely, more than one person connected to the program has recognized that Donovan had interest. To the point where financials were discussed. I’m sure others on the board can cooberate.

The first season of “You” was at least worth the time. Sort of a Dexter feel to it. Idk.

It was widely circulated at the time, after some “insiders” had posted Billy D was the hire, that we failed to open up the checkbook and chose a mid major hire with a lower price tag.

This will get laughed at. But this year’s team might be better with James Blackmon instead of Romeo based on their skill set. And yes, I remember how poorly JB was on the defensive end. But you could count on him for 3-4 threes a game.

All 25 of the NW student section chanting Who’s Your Daddy to end a win against us. Never thought I’d see this day 20 years ago when NW was Bloomington North.

I’ll help the chorus of posters about to reply to you: he’s gone. He’s not coming back no matter what. He’s going to be drafted in the top ten according to every draft service projection. The nba drafts on potential. He’s an elite scorer, our offense just doesn’t showcase him. I think I covered them all.

That’s only on a straight up and down jump shot, not on a drive with momentum towards a set defender.

I don’t think it’s so much that his totals don’t look great, but how he get them. It seems like a lot of his points come on late free throws, but if he’s an elite scorer how does he let his team go on 6 minute droughts and get down for 10-14 without making something happen. You’re the only elite five star on your team, be an alpha, look like it and do what you can do.

Not to pile on, but that sort of lends itself to coaching doesn’t it? If you have talent on paper, but aren’t getting it on the court, it might be because your system isn’t working to get that talent playing to its potential or putting the players in positions to be successful.

So the ceiling is as good as this year’s team?

    IUBB @ Northwestern - Game Thread - 01.22.19 - 9:00 ET

So, realistically, is there any scenario where we are any better next year? TJD coming in needigm to develop on offense and add weight trying to replace Juwan. Romeo leaving. Even if we get Brooks, donthise two replace a “once in a generation” scorer and a senior leader who bangs down low? Are we really talking “wait ‘til 2021”?

    IUBB @ Northwestern - Game Thread - 01.22.19 - 9:00 ET

How many of those points came on free throws? Other than second half against Maryland it hasn’t “looked” like he’s playing well very often based on making plays.

You’re right, I don’t watch the NBA regularly. But they have to have talent that would score more than 3 points in the first half against a team of 3 star college talent playing SG don’t they? Is it that watered down?

    IUBB @ Northwestern - Game Thread - 01.22.19 - 9:00 ET

I get that every draft service projects Romeo as a lottery pick. And I’ve heard posters crucify anyone who says he won’t be, because the NBA drafts on potential. But put me in the group that just has a hard time seeing an NBA star the way he plays right now. If they’re drafting on potential they better be willing to wait 3-4 years. Yes, he can get to the rim. But the NBA is a Golden State league where three point shooting reigns king. You can’t drive the lane against grown men. I’ll support his decision, but if he’s in a starting lineup before year four in the league I’ll be surprised.

How many years of being almost irrelevant until we become Georgetown, UCONN or any other team that used to have consistent success but now people don’t even really think about in college basketball?

I was using an arbitrary number to represent a group of fans with an old school way of thinking. Sorry. I’m 38 myself, no spring chicken. But I’m sick of hearing how guys deserve minutes because they are always giving everything they have, when everything they have looks like a walk-on playing at a school with five national championships that should have four stars at the end of their bench.

I do think Archie feels some pressure to play him because of all the love he gets for his “hustle.” What he brings to the court does not make up for what he lacks in my opinion. Why does IU always have to be the program with a walk-on playing major minutes every year?
