Maryland at IU Game Thread 01/26 1 PM CBS

I have this theory that when the crowd gets loud on a big momentum moment the refs adrenaline gets going and they feel like they have to call something just because they’re fast twitch muscles start firing and they level out games as a result. Stupid. -

I just don’t get that call. If you’re boxing a guy out and he jumps, why is that a foul on you? You’re doing what you’re supposed to do boxing out. -

I mean, come on. Maryland is gonna hit 9 3’s in the first half on the road? What are the odds. This is just silly. -

Is there even a 1% chance that this guy goes anywhere other than Duke? -

There’s a popular theory around sports wagering, that when you see an unranked team favored over a ranked team playing at home, you should take the action. Sit at any sports book in Vegas long enough and you’ll hear about it whenever that line is available. Unranked against ranked, favored at home = green light. -
(2021) C Logan Duncomb to IU, to Winthrop
JerryYeagley23 replied to ccgeneral's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
With Wayne Fleek on this one, but don’t have any first hand knowledge of his game. Numbers just don’t scream “must get” for IU, especially in a loaded and important 2021 class. I know stats aren’t everything, but I hesitate when you see a 6’9” kid in high school have several games where he had 4 points, or 8 points, and consistently scores around 12-16. Sort of pedestrian. My opinion, maybe have him as a plan B, but like to see us prioritize Furst, Kaufman, Aminu and Lander. -

Aminu would be a day one impact guy, love to get him. Not as high on Duncomb or Thomas, but seem like they fit the mold of the “4-year player” that Archie likes. Haven’t seen much on Sparks or Thomas. Are they highly regarded? Either way, good to put as many recruits as possible behind the bench for prime time games against ranked foes at the Hall. -
(2021) SF - Aminu Mohammed to Georgetown
JerryYeagley23 replied to Class of '66 Old Fart's topic in Indiana Basketball Recruiting Forum
Unfortunately this team SHOULD have that player right now, and his name is Devonte Green. He is the alpha scorer we need, but just lacks the self awareness to mentally dial it in and consistently show up ready to make the right plays. Really rooting for it to “click” before the end of the season for him; because he would be a huge missing piece if it did. -
Agree, I think he needs a solid mid range game, and even the ability to hit an open three at a 30% clip to stretch the floor for NBA teams to look at him as a draft choice. Only thing that makes me say he may bolt after next year is my feeling that a LOT of young men might take the chance given the potential that high school kids may be eligible for the draft in 2021.

Upvote. Maybe Kenn Nunn can kick in a duffel bag for some appearances in his commercials?? -
Couldn’t that be a factor in potentially choosing IU if he were to transfer? Can’t you seek a waiver for wanting to be closer to your family, or am I remembering that wrong? I thought I remembered a kid getting granted not having to sit out a year because he transferred to a school closer to home to be near his family.
-
My personal feeling as well. The kid (literally, a 17 year old) made the wrong choice. Maybe he got told how he was gonna be on an NBA showcase team of stars that does what Cal teams do, and he was gonna be a multimillionaire by his 20th birthday. I could see how a kid might see dollar signs and ignore his heart making that decision. I would welcome him into the fold and that lineup (realizing it’s less than likely TJD is still around) is a top 5 team with the kind of class balance and talent that I think most Hoosiers fans are dreaming of becoming a reality.
-
Gotcha. Interesting. If I remember correctly he and TJD were boys. You’d think that might be a factor and a good opportunity for the young man to go to his likely second choice and join an environment where he has a buddy, and can polish his game and enjoy his time while he sits out a year. Maybe the prospect of playing together even convinces TJD to come back for a third year and take a shot at making a run at a natty.

Stomach flu can come on quick. Not saying, but just saying. -
You don’t think we would take him if he told Archie he chose wrong and wants to come to IU?

Respect your opinion, I really do, and enjoy the banter. I just can’t see how they are “much better than anyone in the B1G.” Remember, they lost to Mich by 20. And their best wins are over Oregon by 1 in OT, Washington (who is 2-6 in a weak Pac 12), and Arizona who is 3-3 in the same Pac 12. And the last five blowout wins you noted were against the likes of Pacific, Santa Clara, Loyola Marymount, San Diego, Portland and BYU. I’m not saying they aren’t talented, and I believe Mark Few is a generationally good coach; but I just feel like their high ranking and annual 1-2 seed isn’t warranted based on the fact that they basically take two months off and play scrimmages until the tournament every year. Just my $0.02.
-
Fair. So they beat teams by 35 when they were favored by 20. Vegas spreads are just set to try and equal out the action on either side of it for the house. Still this tells you they’re playing really bad teams and beating them really badly. Hypothetically though, what would their record be in conference if they were in the B1G? That should be how they are compared to teams that physically and mentally have to prepare for and play against, a top 50 team twice a week for three months. Maybe they are really that great and they would be 8-1 right now leading the B1G and winning road games no problem. But we can’t know that. And in my opinion, using their performance in the tourney to justify how good they are isn’t equivalent, because of the favorable path they receive as a 1 or 2 seed. I feel similarly about Notre Dame football though. They’re always overrated because of not being in a conference and then get curb stomped in bowl games when they finally play a team that isn’t a military academy. Just stating my thoughts for the sake of conversation. Maybe I am wrong or alone in this, but it’s how I feel. It will continue to be hard for me to respect them playing in such a weak conference. And I will continue to pick them to get upset in the sweet sixteen or elite eight every year when they finally play a top 20 team after not competing against one for 2+ months.
-
Maybe I’m the only one, but until Gonzaga joins a legitimate conference I just don’t think they deserve to be ranked as a top 5 team. I get it. I know they are landing good recruits and Few is a good/great coach. But I’m sorry, when you play 20 games a year against teams like San Francisco and Loyola Marymount, I just don’t believe you earn a top five recognition simply for winning games you should. Even if you beat three good teams in non-conference play, that’s not a proxy for having to compete against 8-10 other top 50 teams week in and week out. But it’s self fulfilling, because they get their 2 seed and this guarantee two easy wins and a sweet sixteen in the dance, and maybe beat one or two respectable teams and make an elite 8 or a final four. Still don’t buy-in based on 75% of their games being against mid-majors every year. Join the PAC-12 or they should be capped at a 4-seed IMHO. Edit: P.S. I’m old, so I’m probably out of touch, but what is the appeal to a recruit of going to the Zags? Nobody pays any attention to you from December to March. No prime time games, because your conference has no other high profile teams. And you’re playing most of your games after most people are in bed every weekend. Love Few. Love that he made a Cinderella into a destination. But I don’t understand the high ranking and seeding every year, and their ability to get top recruits based on the conference, competition and exposure they lack once real conferences start battling each other. Sorry, rant over.

Yeah, I gave them the W at home against Minny, which isn’t a given, but they should be favored. I don’t think they win @Iowa, against MSU or @Rutgers. Splitting home against Maryland and @PSU seems most likely. That would put them at 9-6. So your 10-5 is best outcome IMO. 9-6 probably had them in a bunch with three or four other teams tied for 2nd-4th. Just really shows you when you walk the schedule out how unpredictable it’s going to be for who will come out on top. Honestly, a conference champion with 7-8 losses looks more and more likely every day.
-
True. Credit due for any road games in conference this year. But we might be getting to the point where the early season’s sexy wins are not representative of what UM really is, which is a bottom of the conference team on par with Nebraska. And Purdue is 11-9. Things can change in a hurry based on the stretch of games you’re in, and that five game run for Illinois could bring them back to the middle of the pack quickly.
-
They’re in good shape, but how about this stretch for them beginning next Sunday: @ #19 Iowa #17 Maryland #11 MSU @ #24 Rutgers @ PSU They could very easily be 8-6 or even 8-7 coming out of that stretch. The way PSU is playing, I’d actually say home against Maryland might be their best shot at a W right there.

Thanks for this info. In the game thread, Hoosierfan31 mentioned something about Danielle Patterson becoming eligible and that being exciting. Can you elaborate on that and how that will impact the team next year? Was she highly ranked but injured? A highly ranked transfer? (Edit: NVM, was being lazy. See now that she transferred from ND looks like she will be a key piece to add to our returning starters next year. McD’s and Jordan Brand All-American. Nice next year feels like it has a chance to be a special year for the women.) Edit: also, looking at the links you provided, it appears we whiffed for 2020 huh? Both Purdue and Rutgers got two top 100 signings and another IN recruit in the top 75 went to MSU. Is that concerning? Wonder how our momentum and young, talented squad wasn’t enough to pull at least one top 100 recruit. 2021 looks to be pretty important we get a couple highly ranked recruits. Several IN players in the top 60. One from North Central. Feels like we need to hit in that class with our talent turning over.

(2021) PF Trey Kaufman to Purdue
JerryYeagley23 replied to ccgeneral's topic in Indiana Basketball Recruiting Forum
Was just reading back through this thread to get some more info on Kaufman. Wish I had seen this video when it was posted. Shows you a lot about the Joey Brunk we are seeing emerge now in conference play. Love how you can clearly see him get frustrated a couple times after allowing TK to get to the hoop on him. Ha. It’s such a casual pick-up setting, and he’s slamming the ball on the ground disappointed in himself on D. Love it. Big time effort guys don’t like to lose, no matter the game or setting. -

Based on the known strength of the conference, and the number of Quad 1 wins that record would have us with, I think 22-9 (12-8) is more likely a tie for 3rd/4th in conference and a 4/5 seed in the Dance. Have to think the committee will look favorably on B1G teams given the gauntlet they face in conference this year as opposed to a team like Virginia Tech or NC State sitting in 4th place in a down ACC that comes out with a similar overall record.
