IUBB vs Michigan State - Sunday, 1/22/23 @ Noon on CBS

Yeah, the more I look at PU’s schedule, the more I think they’re possibly really overrated. They rose to the top ten after wins over WVU, Gonzaga, Duke and FSU. WVU is currently 1-6 in the Big 12. Gonzaga just lost to Loyola Marymount at home, and their “big early season wins” over Kentucky and Mich. St. don’t look as impressive. Duke is now an unranked, middle of the ACC team. FSU is 7-13. So really, they’ve stayed in the top 5 in the country mostly by default because they got there and then played the bottom three teams in the B1G in 5 of their first 8 games in conference. The unbalanced conference schedule is making them look better than they are in my opinion.

IUBB vs Michigan State - Sunday, 1/22/23 @ Noon on CBS

Feels like it hasn’t been brought up, because Purdue has some good early season wins - but should be noted that 4 of their 7 B1G wins have come against Nebraska and Minnesota. Not saying they aren’t the best team in the conference, but they have played a soft schedule and have two 1-point wins against OSU and MSU. Things could get tight at top real quick.

Gutsy performance. Fun to watch. These girls play hard.

Yep. Put that one in the film file and move on. Too many turnovers. The road is tough.

Not our best half of basketball. They are pressing and it took us a quarter and a half to figure out how to break it. Turnovers are uncharacteristically high due a lot to the pressure. They play a dribble drive offense just trying to get in the lane and dish and we need to make an adjustment at halftime to help down earlier when they get into the lane. We miss Grace a lot in a game like this. Good experience for the girls come tourney time to play against this style team. The road in the big ten is always tough. Gotta close this one strong, that’s what a top 4 team would do.

    IUWBB vs Butler - Wednesday, 12/21/22 @ 1:00 on B1G+

Nope. No brace. Moving around pretty freely. Teammates leaning on her during postgame, nobody looked like they were being cautious with her. She’s been doing drills on her own in practice. Probably close to getting cleared for limited contact drills.

Hearing fifth metatarsal, Jones fracture? (I’m not medical, so don’t know what that means)

Good “get outta town game” for the ladies. It was never in doubt, but not the blowout it normally would be if the break weren’t coming. Couple notes: • Grace = no crutches, no boot, no bulky knee brace on the bench. Walking with no noticeable limp. Think we see her before end of January if no setbacks. • Bargesser is impressive in flashes. She has a little Patberger/Cardano-Hilary in her game. Plays tough D, can get in the lane. If she develops a consistent three ball, she’s gonna be fantastic. Remember she missed all of last year after tearing up her knee. She’ll continue to get better. • Garzon is no ordinary freshman. She looks like the freshman that UCONN rolls out there every year and somebody we wouldn’t have been able to recruit in years past. Great recruiting job by the staff to get her in candy stripes. •Moren is an excellent, excellent coach. She is doing for the women’s program, everything the fan base is clamoring for on the men’s side. She has a team built on defense first, that is long and athletic at every position. She hit the portal and brought in slam dunks in places of need in Scalia and Parrish. She recruits internationally with Garzon and sendvik. She lost three All Big-ten athletes last year from a top 10 team, and is arguably better this year because of player development (Chloe Moore-McNeil), portal and recruiting. Her teams play smart, clean basketball. She’s got her finger on the pulse of NIL (wearing a Grace Berger sweatshirt to “put some coin in her pocket while she’s out”) and uses it correctly (Sydney Parrish’s recruitment to IU, NIL was a huge selling point). Moren gives insightful postgame interviews about actual tactics and game plans instead of boiler plate answers because she understands the education level of our basketball fan base. Can’t say enough good things about her and this program. I genuinely hope to convert some more of the frustrated men’s fans this season because the basketball program they’re looking to get behind is here, it’s just of the other gender.

IU Men's Soccer News and Notes

Daniel Munie, Ryan Wittenbrink and Herb Endeley have declared for the MLS Superdraft and will forgoing their COVID year of eligibility and leaving IU. Goumbale will use his COVID year and come back. Will be some talented individuals to replace, but we’re IU and we will reload. Hoping Todd hits the transfer portal and finds a big forward.

Honestly, we are likely to have most of our roster back and should be better next year. The only starter we know we’re losing is Herb Endeley who has already said he isn’t going to use his COVID year to come back next year. That’s a decision that Munie, Wittenbrink and Goumbale will have to make because they have that option as well. How those decisions go will have an impact on us obviously. I don’t see any of those three as having guaranteed pro options so my guess is at least 2/3 of them come back especially given the bitter taste of losing number nine on PKs. Just like every sport nowadays, the transfer portal will come into play for IU as well. We haven’t used it as much as other programs simply because we recruit at such a high level - but I’d love to see Todd go out and get a big target #9 similar to how Syracuse did with their two all-American forwards added this year from smaller west coast teams. Moral of the story: we’ll be back next year. This was supposed to be kind of a rebuilding year and we made a final. We were generally pretty young. I expect to be better next year and ready for another tourney run.

At the game it looked like a PK. Did they show a review on tv??

That was a GREAT half from the boys. Our possession started to wear down their legs and it showed. Be smart here because they will play to get to penalties if they’re tired. Gotta finish our chance.

Welp. Not our best half of soccer. Still, 2-1 and within striking distance. Defense needs to get organized. Giving way too much space and time to their attackers with the ball. Joey Maher having a brutal first half. Responsible on both goals and a couple other bad turnovers/clearances that should have been punished. Gotta get Endeley and Sarver more of the ball in our attack. Their backs are big, so playing direct over the top isn’t working. Need to build to feet and we’ll get another goal. For those who never played soccer, the 2-1 lead is one of the most precarious leads to try and protect. Lot of pressure coming.

I’m not gonna call the broadcast team biased, but saying “UNCG is on their way to building a dynasty” while they’re playing 8-time national champion IU is a little silly.
