    They “Retired” Coach Woodson Thread

For the record I love both these guys but you can't ding Dusty for lacking P5 or high major experience and then turn around and include Schertz's time in D2. He's .596 in D1.

The damage Archie Miller did to this fanbase is insane, anyone who hasn't had a full career yet is DQ'ed. With some coaches there's a question of whether it was more them or the program. This is the case for Butler coaches, Dayton coaches, Xavier coaches etc. When a program comes out of nowhere its pretty easy to tell who's responsible, i.e. Gregg Marshall. But come on, by the standards on this board we won't be happy with literally any hire. Tommy Lloyd had no experience. T.J. Otz was 12-15 at UNLV before his run with Iowa State. Dan Hurley made the tourney only 2/6 years at Rhode Island. Shaka Smart/Rick Barnes got canned. I mean come on, we can find a reason to disqualify anyone. I get this hire feels important but we are in the same spot as literally any school faced with the decision to fire their coach. The top schools right now didn't try to disqualify their guys, they just asked if they can coach.

I get being wary but we keep whiffing on bad coaches. Crean had consistency problems. Archie had system and development problems. Woody has system problems. Let's just get a good coach, okay? What matters is does his system work, can he find talent to play the system, and can he develop guys so they are able to execute the system. With May, the answers are yes. I'm not worried about the rest. We can find him an assistant with high major experience to help with the transition. We have a war chest for NIL to help him get players. I just want a coach who is good with the X's and O's and is going to poor everything he has into getting us back.

Look, I wrote a really long post in his thread on the reasons why we should be a no on Beard/Pearl and why we should take a look at May. If you're still saying we should hire Beard do me a favor and read the police report. In a few years, I could see Shrews having ND turned around. Shertz hasn't been to a tourney yet but he could be a hot name. But right now, there's no other real candidate out there. If you want to move from Woody now, it probably has to be May And there's no real reason why we shouldn't be comfortable with him. You can scream unproven all you want but a good coach is a good coach, simple as that. All he's done is build a program out of absolutely nothing at FAU. Even without people ridiculously discounting his Final Four as a "fluke" he'd still be a good candidate for a better job.

Those pesky morals. Always getting in the way of what I want to do! Starting to think the 16 in your username refers to your age cause that's an asinine argument https://gbmwolverine.com/2023/06/06/michigan-basketball-6-potential-coaching-candidates-to-replace-juwan-howard/ Oh, and here's his name on another big ten job.

He's literally one of the hottest names for every opening this year....not exactly a nepotism hire.

Dusty would be great, some of y'all would call RMK an underwhelming hire.

Well, this just sucks. Yeah, he will probably find more talent and bring in some shooting, but we are still gonna play two bigs, not shoot any 3's and force feed the post. Just uninspiring, and we are gonna be rebuilding watching Sisley and Mullins dunk on us after they commit to Purdue.

In your opinion, is there any chance this happens after this year? Have you heard anything? I need to know whether to have hope or not.

    A Case for Dusty May

Not sure about the "nice guys finish last" line. I agree we need a dog, but I think that has more to do with work ethic than anything. Neither Shertz or May (or Shrews for that matter) played high level college basketball. They had to work their way up. They scrapped their way up to where they are. Everything I've read and every interview I've seen talks about how hard the dude works. If he can be a nice guy while doing it I don't see it as a problem. Also Bennett, Williams, and Wright all are universally known as super nice guys and none of them had problems winning.

You're right, just Edwards and Edey. We definitely couldn't have used Swanigan, Ivey, Cline, Stefanovic, Gillis, Furst, Loyer, or Smith. You have to recruit your pipeline.

Duke/UNC do lock down North Carolina in addition to bringing in burger boys, Kentucky has Reed Sheppard, UConn recruits the Northeast very well, and Purdue has owned our state recently and is probably the best team in the country. It's important to recruit your pipeline.

Chambers is a good coach too, he got screwed. Tbf though, PSU was 206th in minutes continuity in Shrews' first year. Lundy, Dread and Harrar were the man returners, but it's not like they kept the whole Lamar Stevens team together.

    A Case for Dusty May

Florida/Miami are no threats to IU. He's in the south because he had to scrap to get where he is, just like Shertz, but he's an East Greene boy at heart. He would take the job even from another power 5. His kids are no longer in HS, he can be mobile if he wants to. As for his coaching acumen, I don't understand this board sometimes. Just because we found a shiny new toy doesn't mean that the others are lesser candidates. I love em both but I think a lot of people here sort of find a new candidate and then try to find reasons to disqualify others. Dusty absolutely deserves to be a candidate. For starters, ISU is a WAY better job. It's in Indiana for god's sake, plus they have a final four! Hulman Center holds 9,000 people! I get the feeling most people here don't understand what FAU is. Since the first season of KenPom, ISU has 5 top 100 seasons, and only 5 seasons worse than 200 in KP. In the same time frame, FAU had only 2 seasons in history ranked in the top 200 in KP. Kenpom program ranks even including Dusty's tenure: ISU - 138, FAU - 210. Then Dusty May came in and had 6 straight winning seasons (before him there were only 4 winning seasons since '98). 6 straight seasons above 200 in Kenpom. The first two seasons in FAU history under 100 in Kenpom (17 last year, currently 24). And a Final freakin Four. All with no recruits. Someone said he got lucky with Nelly Davis? He famously came off the bench most of last season. ISU arguably has the better talent right now, Conwell was a 3 star recruit! Call if whatever you want, but this dude can freaking coach. He's energetic, young, and he loves our school and we could do much, much worse. Since I get the sense that it was the athletic article that convinced all of you, here's some more light reading: https://theathletic.com/4284970/2023/03/09/dusty-may-florida-atlantic-college-basketball-ncaa/

    General Coach Candidate News

I think they are all good, but I don't necessarily agree. Shrews' relative success at the worst B1G program was impressive to me. It's probably not fair to hold this year at ND against Shrews, no one here is talking about Shertz's 11-20 first year at ISU (nor should they be). Shrews hasn't even gotten a year three yet, but in year two he got PSU their first All-American in 80 years and won a tourney game. Record can't always tell the full story, 10 months ago Shrews was the hottest name in coaching for a reason. For the record I think all three of them would succeed at IU but I am most confident in Shrew's ability to succeed at the P5 level because he's done it.

I don't, but what inroads we do have in 25 are all from Walsh and our one signee is also a Walsh recruit.

    General Coach Candidate News

Alright I have some thoughts after reading this thread. Feel free to respond. First, Woodson isn't going anywhere. I do think things will be a little better next year. The shooting problem is so obvious that he will be forced to go out and find someone. Unfortunately the biggest problem is the system. I still haven't seen anything to suggest that he will go away from playing 2 bigs, and until that happens we aren't going to be good. Defense getting worse every year is very worrying. Luckily any coach could come in and keep all our recruiting progress just by retaining Walsh. The good news is we have 3 good candidates: Shertz, Shrews, and May. Anyone who says Pearl or Beard is not serious. Pearl is a known scumbag. Its not just cheating the NCAA - which apparently this board no longer cares about - Chuck Person caught a federal charge. I get the people who want Beard. His brand of basketball is modern Bob Knight, and he's one of the best coaches in the game. But there are things bigger than basketball and I don't want my alma mater hiring him. Go read the police report. There were bite marks. Shertz is great. I love his ISU teams, but I worry that his teams sometimes drop games when they cannot hit their 3's. That being said his offense is a layup line, and an absolute treat to watch, and he is one of the best talent evaluators in the game right now. He's lost damn near every recruiting battle he's had in the last 3 years and he still got Avila and Conwell because no one else was looking. Imagine him with a real recruiting apparatus. If you think he is the guy, you prob need to go get him now, no connections to Indiana so he will be hard to lure away from any other good job. Shrews is a bit of the same, but more proven. He's my top choice atm. He should not be judged by this year at ND, he would lock down the state, and we would be fun. He has some of the best relationships in the state and especially at La Lu. Mullins, Sisley would commit immediately and Haralson wouldn't be far behind. Also important to note that Shrews' rosters at PSU played small because those were the only guys he could get (and he still won). When he was OC at Purdue they were able to play through Trevion Williams so he can play that way as well. If you give him our budget I have no doubt we would be a monster. Protege of Stevens and Painter, Indiana native. Young guy. Family man. Loves this state more than anyone. Knows the portal, knows recruiting. Plays a good brand and is by all accounts an incredible man. May is an IU guy, he's young, he plays a modern brand like the other two but one thing I love about his teams is that he can win in every way. Not hitting threes? They will drive on you. They can beat you through the post. Last year they proved they could lock you down. It's never one guy with him, he develops everyone to defend, shoot, and drive so they are crazy versatile. That is what wins in the tourney, you have to be able to win in different ways. He is NOT CAM. FAU was nothing before him and they have successfully jumped to the American with a starting lineup with the following heights: 6-0. 6-1, 6-2, 6-4, 7-0. Dayton succeeded before Archie and after him. The people shitting on him don't know him. FAU's gym holds less than a third as much as ISU's. The fact that they went to a F4 is a freaking miracle and we may just need a miracle worker. I think any one of these guys would be a success. The good news is I am 99% sure Shrews and May would leave almost any job for the IU opening. May will likely take L'Ville, OSU, or UM next year but I don't think he would have a problem leaving any of those to take IU. Shrews will 1000% leave ND for us. Next year the picture will begin to take shape, May will get a shot at the Power 5 level and we will see if he is up to it. Shrews will have all his young guys for another year. This season sucks but we have honestly good options for the post-Woodson world. I get we have been hurt in the past but there is so much opportunity to get this next hire right.

    A Case for Dusty May

Woodson is getting another year. That being said, I'm all in on May after Woody and I don't think waiting a year will close the door on our chance to get him. I think he will take one of the open jobs (L'Ville, Michigan, Depaul) and it will be a good trial run at a higher level. From what I've heard, if/when we come calling he will take the job. I do love his system. Its modern like Shrews' and Shertz's except its more adaptable. I've seen Shrews and Shertz lose when they aren't hitting 3's. If you watch FAU's run last year, they kept winning because they could win in a bunch of different ways. They could win games by hitting 3's, getting to the line, playing through the post, locking down the other team etc etc. And all that with only 2 rotation players over 6'4. Everyone on the team can shoot, drive, and defend. Their versatility made it really hard take them out of one thing that they do well. Plus, CBB is a young man's game right now. It takes sheer power of will, coaching, recruiting etc to be successful and he has youth and high energy that would be a huge benefit.

    Coach Curt Cignetti to INDIANA

https://www.dnronline.com/sun_belt_extra/inside-cignetti-s-quarterback-influences-ability-to-develop/article_994b03b7-dbbc-59e9-96fb-c01f1d2e6d65.html Posted this a few days ago but this article talks about his offensive philosophy. Used to be an NFL-style, under center guy. During an end of season film session he watched Sark's NC winning Alabama offense and decided to adopt it. Love that he's willing to adapt.
