Player and Recruit Retention News/Discussion & Potential Transfers
LamarCheeks replied to Brass Cannon's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
If JBJ and TB leave, along with OG -- and Moore, Smith and Durham come in, that puts us at the limit. There wouldn't be room for a grad transfer. -
Player and Recruit Retention News/Discussion & Potential Transfers

Moore had asked to be released from his LOI. If CAM were concerned about being oversigned, I would think he would just grant him the release. I have a feeling CAM has a pretty good idea of who's staying and who's going. Otherwise, he would just forget Moore. Unless he knows something (which he must), there would be no reason to continue to pursue Moore. -

Don't we have to assume Archie has a pretty good idea that among the 12 current players on roster, at least two more will be leaving? Otherwise, why continue to go after Moore? If he knew, or had a really good guess, that only one more were leaving, wouldn't he just grant Moore his release? Because right now, Smith and Durham are coming in and OG is leaving. That leaves us over by one. And if Moore sticks, we'll be over by two (that's assuming RoJo, JBJ and TB come back, although it seems unlikely all three will). I'm guessing he doesn't want to, in his first few months on the job, have to go up to a current player (or two) and say, "Sorry. We won't have a scholarship for you next season." -
Archie Miller's staff at Indiana will be Bruiser Flint, Tom Ostrom (Dayton) and Ed Schilling (UCLA),

This is kinda amusing if you check out the reader comments. Most of them are saying "Why couldn't IU take Alford and leave Schilling!" ... I get the impression that it wouldn't have broken many hearts in Westwood if we had hired Alford. http://www.bruinsnation.com/ucla_basketball/2017/4/13/15296378/ucla-basketball-coach-takes-indiana-job -

But it does crack me up. It really, really does. -

I know every player has a right to test his draft status -- and I'm cool with that. But I can't help but chuckle when I see that four dudes from an 18-16 team that finished 10th in its conference and lost its only NIT game have declared for the NBA. Cracks me up! -
Let's face it, though. If an athletic program isn't gonna get the death penalty for enabling a child rapist, it's never gonna happen. The "death penalty" -- with respect to major programs -- died with SMU football, methinks.

I'm just hoping one of these dudes can coach up the big fellas. Cody was pretty good as a freshman and ... about the same as a sophomore. Thomas B. was pretty good as a freshman and ... not so good as a sophomore. He looked totally lost and unpolished out there at times last season. It seemed his only move was to lower his shoulder, bull his way to the basket, get called for a charge and throw up his arms and complain. He's got some skills -- someone needs to help him put those to good use. -

Sorry to see OG, go. But knowing sooner rather than later will be beneficial. At least his decision is final, so Archie won't have to wait till May 24 to know what his plans are. -
If Sergio could make a pressure put, he'd have won by three shots in regulation!

BTW, Arizona State is 12-17 and 2-9 in the Pac-12. ... Come on home, Tracy -- back where you belong! -
Player and Recruit Retention News/Discussion & Potential Transfers

It helps, of course, that Alford is making millions. And at many schools, kids of school employees or faculty usually get a break on tuition (maybe even half price). That's why I always thought it was wasteful that Pat Knight was on scholarship at IU. For one, he wasn't a Big Ten-caliber player. For two, his daddy made millions. For three, he would've received a break on tuition anyway. -

I believe so. In fact, if memory serves, when Crean oversigned with "The Movement," rumors were circulating that one of the scholarship players or one of the signees (Yogi, perhaps?) whose parents had the means to pay for college would give up his scholarship and essentially, become a walk-on. Don't know if that's true or not, but it was out there. (Of course, Patterson being denied entrance into school "solved" that problem). -

If CAM is going hard after all three (and by all indications, Smith and Durham are on board), he must have a strong indication three guys on the current roster with eligibility remaining won't return, right? I'm hoping he has more of a plan than Crean seemed to in the roster shuffling ... That May 24 deadline to stay in the draft or return to school makes things really, really sticky ... -

To be honest, I don't remember one legitimate media source reporting anything about Donovan. It was just websites and chat rooms going off their rockers. But I agree, Donovan to IU wasn't happening. -
Way, way, way back in the day, when I actually used to watch wrestling, Ricky "The Dragon" Steamboat rassled Randy "Macho Man" Savage at WrestleMania 3. It's a classic!
-
Who is Ricky Steamboat's opponent at Wrestlemania?

Hey, Chicago, what do you say The Cubs are gonna win today!

This was during my time at IU. You can put the pieces together and figure it was during the 1990-91 season, when Cheney, Reynolds and the Grahams were sophomores and Bailey was a freshman. Because the year before, they were 8-10 in the B1G. This must've been right before their "Big Monday" game in West Lafayette, because he references being sick of losing to Purdue and not wanting to go get his @$$ kicked Monday night. They didn't.

Was watching the Thunder-Spurs game when they did a between-quarters interview with Billy Donovan. After he finished, I played the tape backwards and in a hidden message, he said: "I really wanted to coach Indiana, but my wife decided she didn't want to move to Bloomington. She's the boss."
-
He said the same thing to Seth Davis. I don't get it. If you're coaching a blue-blood program, you don't get a re-start. I don't think anybody expected an NCAA title the year after Cody and Vic left, but 17-15, 7th in the B1G and no postseason was ridiculous. And if "The Movement" -- except Yogi -- hadn't turned out to be such a massive flop, he would have been well-stocked to keep moving forward. The whole second start thing boggles my mind.

You still ask the question. If you're a journalist, that is.
-
Dude is bi-polar. He'll be back on the "F--k Indiana" bandwagon again very soon.

I just listened to it on iTunes, but this should work ... http://www.stitcher.com/podcast/the-seth-davis-podcast/e/49592691?autoplay=true

You follow it up because you're supposed to be a journalist. I'm guessing that right after Crean said that, plenty of legitimate interviewers would've said: "Whoa. Let's back up a minute here. You're claiming you lost Indiana players because money changed hands. Let's have some examples ..." I'm sure Crean would have balked, but that question definitely needed to be asked.
