They “Retired” Coach Woodson Thread
jumpshot53 replied to Banksyrules's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
I have to admit, I'm a flip-flopper. I wasn't going to watch, I didn't care if MSU would beat us, but the game pulled me in. I was having fun, cheering for my team and happy for our guys...and happy for our coach. Their speeches didn't bother me, I'm kind of surprised Liam is getting so much criticism. I would be too tongued tied in front of thousands of people, and thousands watching from home to be an eloquent speaker. Liam didn't bother me, I don't think he was arrogant, I think he might have used better wording, but he is at IU to play basketball, not give speeches. He's a good kid from all reports, so I hope people lay off him. Woodson didn't bother me either. He knows he's being attacked from so many now. Right or wrong, he has the right to defend himself, just like we all do. The bigger they are, the harder they fall, so if he fails at this job, that will be his forever legacy. I just want our team to win and I want the best person to make that happen. Speaking of Dusty....lol...I heard a rumor that he wasn't ready to leave his job just yet. Could that be a reason why no change was made this year at IU? If we lose the first game this week, I'll probably be back on here calling for Woodson's head. Being an IU fan is HARD! -

I like Carly Simon. You're so Vain is an appropriate song for our Mike Woodson. -

My dream is that the powers that be are going to pay an NBA team to offer Woodson a position so that we can say he wasn't fired from IU. Nobody in charge wants to fire our legend, so Woodson can save face, and we can get rid of him if the Pacers or someone decide them "need" him on their staff. Sounds good to me. -

The big time donors that could help with the buy-out are paying attention. All this discord could push someone to give a little more to stop this mess. Not everyone is afraid of Quinn. -

I think the decision has already been made. Dolson knows what he's going to do. At least that's what I believe. He understands what next year will be like, I don't think Mike Woodson will be our coach next year. I'm probably in the minority but, bad coaching isn't the only issue going on with our coach. -

Well, Woody has his excuse for next year. He's told us again and again that his players are young or were transfers from other schools. It takes time to learn to play together and learn his system. Next year with several new players, same thing will happen. I just want to know how many idiots will think that makes sense. There's no way next year won't be another crap show. -

Wasn't one of the big reasons Tom Crean was fired was because of his lack of bonding with Indiana high school coaches? Also, he was the target of many irate fans telling him he sucked. I believe even one Maryland fan told Crean he ruined basketball. It sounds like Woodson is heading down the same path as Crean is his last days. -

Izzo and Painter have had a few issues that I really don't want to bring up in this thread. I don't know about the others. -

Just curious, but which coach is squeaky clean? Alford protecting a player who did bad things, Coach K allowing homes to be bought for players, every UNC coach. The list goes on and on. Is it just part of the game? Even Knight allowed his best players to stay on the team when they pulled an Xavier Johnson. I'm really curious, is there a coach out there that didn't do something we might call shady? I really don't know. -

Come on guys, Pearl's age is a none issue. We're talking coaching basketball, not running for or being President of the USA....lol. Honestly, 60 something isn't that old anymore. And just because they carry a little extra weight, doesn't mean they are going to drop dead soon. My aunt Flossie (true name) was the size of our sofa and she lived to be 87 with a clear mind and sense of humor. I'm sure there are old guys on this site that still function quite well. Our new football coach seems quite alert and active to me. The problem with being over 60 is making big changes. Pearl doesn't need to make changes as a coach of college ball. When Woodson was hired he made a comment about always listening to advice, and surrounding himself with people that could help win games. That just hasn't been the case. His assistants are either clueless, or they enjoy their perks and keep their mouths shut. Hanging around NBA friends, rich donors, being celebrities on campus, and earning good money is hard to beat. Woodson coming back next year without TJD, or a healthy X (haha), isn't going to end well. It's time to put this experiment to bed. IMO. -
If all speeders were kept from showing up for games, it would be a very empty arena. I don't even want to tell you about some of my friends, (all over 50). They can finally afford those nice sporty cars and they do enjoy seeing what those cars can do.

Dakich is posting on twitter, laughing at the people saying that RMK had a "no nonsense policy" for his players. DD said Knight ALWAYS kept talented players instead of dismissing them from the team. I don't know where people got the idea IU players were squeaky clean in the good old days...lol. Some posters sound like they would only be happy with a team of Stepford robots representing Indiana basketball. Where did all misinformation about RMK come from? He was a GREAT coach, but he never insisted on a team full of choir boys.

Does anyone know the channel number for BTN plus on Direct tv? I read it wasn't on the over flow channels. Also, for those that subscribe, can you share your log in with others to watch the game at their homes? Thx. -
Thanks, that was funny! I met Tom Crean once at a charity event and after I introduced myself he loudly asked "are you a Purdue fan". I was very surprised because it came out very accusatory besides being very loud. I assured him I was an IU fan and I spent the next few hours trying to figure out why he assumed that. I wasn't wearing black and gold, I was sitting with other people wearing red and I was very polite to him. It was very strange!

I think they took that story down, darn it. I really wanted to read that.
-
It sounds like Crean wasn't well liked. I've heard that before. Some players said if you weren't a super star, he wasn't that invested. I believe that, most of Crean's tweets are about his NBA players.
-
Georgia basketball is really imploding. Crean is losing so many players to transfers and declaring for the draft. One of the former players Juwan Parker is tweeting about how the new guy (Crean) came in and trashed everything and how we should look at all the transfers. Sorry, I can't share the post, but his page is open, if you want to see. Looking at his team next year, it sure looks dismal. I wonder if he'll be fired soon?

I was really shocked to read some Ohio State forums where people were so down on Coach Holtman. They disliked Brunk coming to Ohio State and blamed it on Holtman's awful recruiting.
-
I've heard this mentioned before, does he have ties to Duke? He had ties to Indiana, which made it seem more realistic. Duke, other than being great under Coach K, has no special meaning to Stevens, unless I've missed something. I don't know, I'm clueless on Duke being mentioned..lol

Didn't Gene Keady serve as a special assistant to Steve Lavin at St. Johns? Would Larry Brown be something like that? I thought it was pretty cool when Gene did that. -
General Coach Candidate News

Hiring a 68 year old who WILL win, will avoid the carousel. If he stayed until he was 75, like a Boeheim, Coach K, etc are right now, then that would make IU a very attractive job for the next coach. Right now, apparently we're considered a lateral move, we're hoping someone chooses us, and who is to say that our next coach (young or old) will last 10 years. The names we are all talking about are a gamble right now.
