Georgetown stinks. They have lost more players to transfer than Purdue. IU will play a better team than Georgetown in the Gavitt--Xavier or maybe Villanova.

Indiana MBB 20-21 Rotation Discussion
Honkyman replied to Brass Cannon's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
Justin Smith isn't coming off the bench. If Hunter is good enough to be a starter then Archie moves TJD to the 5, Smith to the 4 and Hunter to the 3 to start. Brunk is too slow against most teams anyway. People on this board have been predicting Smith would transfer or lose his starting job for two years now. Smith is arguably the best defensive player on the team and Archie values defense. -

Lander won't start at the beginning of the season. He'll need some acclimation time. Maybe by conference play. But he'll get lots of playing time. Also, while Lander and Phinisee will play together some, two 6'1'' guards would present defensive liability issues especially against better teams whose shooting guards are 6'4'' or taller. -
(2020) SF Jordan Geronimo to Maryland
Honkyman replied to ccgeneral's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
Knight sometimes started three guards that year. A college player doesn't average 13 points a game if he has been replaced by a freshman. During the 1987-88 season Dean Garrett averaged 16 points a game, Jay Edwards averaged 15 points a game and Keith Smart averaged 13 points a game (up 2 points from the year before). Ricky Callaway averaged 11 points a game. Lyndon Jones average under 5 points a game. Garrett, Edwards, Smart and Callaway started the most games, played the most in those games, and scored the most points. Your statement is contrary to fact. -

On 5/16/2020 at 10:29 AM, Stuhoo said: After starting on our National Championship team, Rick Calloway and Keith Smart we’re beaten out the next year, as seniors, by freshmen Jay Edwards and Lyndon Jones. _______________________ Keith Smart started in the year after the championship year, played exactly the same minutes as the year before (26 minutes per game) and averaged 13.2 points a game, 2 points a game more than the year before. Smart then played 9 years in the NBA. Ricky Callaway also started most games the year after the championship averaging 11.8 points and playing 29 minutes a game. -
Taking a guess at our Single Plays for 20-21

That looks like a 12-8 conference record for IU, give or take a game. -
Painter is one of the better coaches in the Big 10 and usually has his teams outperforming their talent level. I suspect he will be fine. What he said needs to be said more by coaches.

If it's that bad they won't be playing basketball at all. Anyone can contract the coronavirus. Statistically those who are 60 and older who have COVID-19 have a high mortality rate. But people of all ages are getting it and dying from it. If Boeheim or Krzyzewski can get it so can Archie Miller and Trayce Jackson Davis. The odds of Archie and TJD recovering would be greater than Boeheim or Krzyaewski but the chances of getting it are the same if they are coaching or playing in an environment containing infectious materials or surfaces.

IUBB - 2020 Off-Season News
Honkyman replied to Class of '66 Old Fart's topic in Indiana Men's Basketball
I read the article as the story about a player who needs to be at a school where he can play through his mistakes. That wasn't possible at Indiana where there is a lot of competition for playing time. Anderson has had nothing but good things to say about Indiana. He has been quoted in other articles about him leaving saying that he loved his time at IU and he had plenty of opportunity to play. I'm not sure why some on this board feel that it is OK to trash the guy on the way on out. Especially after so many pointed to Hartman's interview about the impact of criticism on young players. He clearly wasn't criticizing Archie as someone alleged above. He just wants to be somewhere where he can play more and that wasn't going to happen at IU. -

I didn't read the article or the quote to infer that Anderson was't given a chance to perform. -

I don't think the article suggested it was anyone's "fault." That is a total misreading of the piece, imo. I think it was simply stating the reality of Division I basketball at a Big Ten school like IU. You either have to contribute or you don't play. Damezi Anderson isn't the first player to come to IU or any other Big Ten team and struggle. -
Loaded Chicken Sandwich Here is the roster of the 1972-1973 New York Knicks that won the NBA championship that season. Kinda crazy the amount of “small school” kids on the roster. _________ It was a different era. In the 1960s and early 70s many of the "big schools" were still not recruiting African American players like they do now. At some of the big schools there was an unwritten rule that there could not be more African Americans than white players on the basketball squads. Besides, many black families were more comfortable sending their kids to the smaller schools that had a better history with African American students.

2020 General Recruiting Thread
Honkyman replied to ccgeneral's topic in Indiana Basketball Recruiting Forum
Brass Canon: "If we get a 5 star every year and our lowest ranked guys are still in the top 150 we will be one of the more talented teams in the conference." The 2020-21 season will be the test of this argument. IU will have two 5-stars in TJD and Lander, a group of experienced players (including a couple of top 100 players), and 3 freshmen in the 110-150 range. -
Hey Hovadipo--Kelvin Sampson did not blow Oden and Conley's recruitment as you claim. Greg Oden was at Ohio State during the 2006-7 season. That means Mike Davis not Sampson was the IU coach (in his last season as it turns out) when Oden was being recruited and committed to Ohio State. Davis left IU after the 2005-2006 season. Oden had already committed to Ohio State by the time Sampson was hired. BTW, Sampson holds the best winning percentage of any IU basketball coach (74.1%). It would be nice to start winning at something about approaching that clip again.

2020 General Recruiting Thread
Honkyman replied to ccgeneral's topic in Indiana Basketball Recruiting Forum
HoosierAloha asks "When was the last time the Big Ten dominated in recruiting?" It certainly has been a long time. Which might help explain why the last time a Big Ten team won a NCAA basketball championship was 20 years ago (Michigan State--2000). And before 2000? (Michigan 1989). And before that? (Indiana 1987; Indiana 1981). Indiana won championships with highly recruited players. The 1976 Indiana team had 3 players who were considered top 10 players in high school (Buckner and Benson were considered the top players in the country at their respective positions in high school). The 1981 team had Isiah Thomas and Landon Turner, both McDonald's All Americans. Great recruiting gives college teams a chance to compete for a national championship or at least be among the top ranked teams in the country. Assuming Kristian Lander re-classifies, Indiana will have two McDonald's All Americans next season and that will give them a chance to at least compete for the Big Ten championship. -
Cody Zeller is learning guitar and wondering if G-C-D chords are all he needs to know to play country music? The answer is almost. Throw in an A chord and a couple of minor chords--E minor, A minor--and he can play many country songs.

Loaded Chicken Sandwich A big reason why it wasn’t a smart move for so many to “declare.” Because it was meaningless when it comes to the “feedback.” No one is giving any real feedback right now. _____________- Players can't work out in the presence of NBA executives or scouts. Any feedback comes from college game film.

Good move for Damezi. Loyola is a really good school with a storied basketball tradition. They won the NCAA championship in 1963 and reached the Final Four in 2018. The school is close to home so family can readily see him play (South Bend is just 90 miles from Chicago). The campus is nice and located on the shores of Lake Michigan. Hopefully Damezi will rediscover the shot that made him the all time leading scorer in St. Joseph County history. -

The Maui tournament should be competitive. Nearly all the teams in the field will be decent and some pretty good next season. IU will be bringing in a very experienced team with at least a couple of very good players.
-
Five Big Ten teams were in the top 20 in non-conference strength of schedule this past season and eight Big Ten teams had tougher non-conference schedules than IU in the 2019-2020 season. If IU is going to return to "elite status" or even if IU just wants to be able to compete for a top 5 spot in the conference, we need a tougher non-conference schedule than we have had the past couple of years. (We should be top five non-conference SOS within the conference). Michigan State, which had the 3rd toughest non-conference SOS in the country this past year, almost always has a tough non-conference schedule and sometimes they struggle. But come conference time they are better prepared to compete for a conference championship and they usually do.
-
"Yet people will complain" The non-conference schedules the past two seasons warranted criticism. Maui potentially improves the quality of the non-conference schedule with possible games with North Carolina and other quality teams.
-
I think you are probably right about this. A five star-point guard who can do more off the dribble than anyone else on the team is going to get substantial playing time. Lander will have to put on some weight to make it through the grueling Big Ten season, however.
-
If Kristian Lander is able to re-classify, we will be able to compare the two point guards. I would put my money on Lander providing the most productive minutes.

By people I mean fans including many on this board. So many fans and people on this board have excused Phinisee's lackluster play most of his freshman year because of his concussion. The problem is that his sophomore year was no better.
